Daily CFB Articles (links): Neb denies Mack Brown interest, Dantonio/Narduzzi, and coaching searches

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Usually I try to post the most interesting or relevant article that I receive in my daily news blast regarding college athletics.

Today there were 3 that caught my attention, however, we don't need 3 threads...so here they are:

Nebraska denies sending out a feeler to Mack Brown - http://www.omaha.com/article/20131215/HUSKERS/131219118/1001#eichorst-denies-report-nebraska-sent-feeler-to-mack-brown

MSU AD Hollis confident Dantonio and Narduzzi will return - http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/2013/12/michigan_state_ad_mark_hollis_11.html

Bleacher Report article on how programs conduct coaching searches - http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1888821-how-a-college-football-program-conducts-a-coaching-search

#1 Where there's smoke...

Yeah, I know, that's what I hate about the media attitude toward rumors.  Denials are treated as non-denials and denials that aren't strong enough are as good as confirmation.  All kinds of fake smoke around Saban and Texas and there wasn't any fire after all.

Re-fucking-lax.

You conveniently left out where I said, the point was to discuss the possibility. I don't get paid based off of viewers, one can safely assume that I'm trolling for clicks to make money off of advertising. I hadn't even heard or thought of Brown to Neb...the point was to discuss the possibility.

It's changed.

And there very frequently is something to the rumors.  I don't think it's a coincidence that the same handful of coaches always get their names brought up.  The guys who are 100% sure they're staying put never seem to have to deal with these rumors.

What probably happens is this: a coach's agent might contact a representative of another school to hear them out.  At that point the coach might decide to nix the idea, but news of that little conversation will leak out somehow (probably by the agent).  And then the coach says, "I have never had contact with that school,"  which is sort of true - his agent did, not him - and as he signs a newer, richer contract with his current school.

(Or, if the school decides not to give in, the coach may decide to then seriously pursue the new job offer, or at least until he does get that raise.)

He has shown repeatedly he will deny something that days/weeks later he does.  So, I think denials can often mean something's up.  Because if someone wants to CYA they must deny even if they know they are interested in exactly what they are denying.

To provide a few more options to people, Jeremy Fowler at CBS Sports also does a quick-hit type column on changes and what he's heard - (LINK). Among some of the things that get a mention here, ND may have some of its coordinator situation resolved soon and the Florida OC situation supposedly could involve ASU's Mike Norvell. He also talks about why Texas should give Mike Gundy a look and some potential replacements for Rich Ellerson.

Gundy may be a skilled football coach. But something tells me Texas, being a quality academic school that zealously protects its reputation, won't even consider hiring a pommaded loose-cannon at the center of a program as decidedly lax/sleazy as Okie State. The SI investigation of the latter, while flawed, nevertheless confirmed that OSU is a bottom-feeder in terms of ethics, academic standards, etc. Why on earth would Texas say, "Hey, give us some of that!" No way in hell.

It's O-State so that they weren't confused with the buckeyes. Btw we are playing K-State in the bowl. The term Okie isn't one you want to throw Around; it isn't looked upon favorably. Guns are usually in involved to make corrections. O-State does go by the nickname. Cowpokes. Feel free to use the obvious change. We all did at OU.

Regardless of the validity of these speculations, this off season should be interesting with all the open HC jobs between the NFL and College.

Maybe that's no different than any other year but it seems more interesting this time.

The reasons he is linked to Texas are that supposedly he is not happy with the ownership in San Fran; they are supposedly too hands-on for his liking.  And his honeymoon is winding down if Seattle runs away with the division and he doesn't get back to the Super Bowl.

I'm not saying that he's likely to jump back to college, but it wouldn't surprise me if he chose recruiting and teaching over meddling owners and babysitting.

Jim Harbaugh will never have any affiliation with the University of Michigan athletic department. The closest would be if somehow Sunday night/Monday night game intros started doing an intro for the coaches and even then he'd probably shout out Palo Alto where he graduated from.

There's literally zero reason to go back to college for Harbaugh. He's coaching one of the premier franchises in the NFL with a history that rivals that of Michigan in a gorgeous part of the country.

Why is Nebraska not interested in Narduzzi? If anyone could bring the black shirts back it would be him. I'm not advocating for that because that would suck for us. Would it not be a good move for him though?

When no one has any interest in your head coach. Saban, Miles, Meyer are always mentioned when jobs are available. Even Dantonio is now a hot coaching commodity. I just wish that others had interest in any of our coaches. Outside of Mattison, that cant be said.

"The youth excuse can only go so far"...hilarious.  I guess you can't use the "youth excuse" when you're starting freshmen.  You only get to use it if they're still in high school and starting for your college team.

We're all disappointed with the season, but the negativity of this blog, that was soooo optimistic about the previous coaching staff, is a trip.

The system that they run is conducive to being able to run with inexperienced/less talented OL. His system is based off of the Wing-T. The Wing-T and the Flexbone are huge in high school because you don't need to have a juggernaut of an OL in order to move the ball consistently. This is the same reason that all of the military academies run the Flexbone: they can get under-sized, quick linemen to get initial blocks that don't need to be held for longer than a half of a second.

The scheme certainly contributes, but the line, going into this year was made up of guys who had started 11, 0, 22, 23, 9 games, respectively. They are young, but not inexperienced. Our line, by contrast, looked like 50, 0, 0, 0, 26. And the 0s were backed up by more 0s. Our guys are young and inexperienced. Our 2015 line will probably look a lot like Auburn's 2013 line. But hopefully, we won't have any 0s (they wouldn't either, if their starter hadn't gotten hurt, forcing them to play Kozan). It is odd, though, that this 7-5 in year 3 is "The Worst Year Ever", while the 2010 7-5 was really a sign of good things to come

I think Hoke is here at least 2, probably 3, more years. Next year is a contract year for Borges. If he doesn't live up to expectations, he'll be gone. Brandon will allow Hoke to hire a new OC, because he wants to show everyone that he made the right decision to hire Hoke. By the time that the 2015 season rolls around, his first two classes will be 4th and 5th year players and I think there will be too much talent, especially defensively to have fewer than 8-9 wins, which keeps him around. If they don't improve upon that, though, he's gone after 2016.

justingoblue

I would put serious money on Hoke either a) signing an extension or b) being shown the door after next year. In practical terms I think that means he signs an extension.

Generally you won't see coaches with less than two years on any given contract for recruiting purposes.

I don't remember Miles, since his arrival at LSU, ever being mentioned for a job that wasn't Michigan.

It's hard to pry guys away from elite jobs.  Jim Tressel was never a candidate for anywhere else when he was at Ohio.  Stoops and Brown were never rumored to be leaving OU and UT when they were at the top of their game.  The reason why Saban and Meyer get named is because they're pretty much hired guns - they have a history of leaving their schools after brief stays.

Blue Mike

December 17th, 2013 at 12:41 PM ^

We give Meyer and Saban crap all the time about their apparent wandering eye, but now you want rumors of Hoke being considered for other jobs?  I'd rather be able to not worry about whether or not our coach is going to be here for the forseeable future.

Factor in age and MSU not being considered a coaching "destination", and it is easy to see why Hoke isn't being brought up all the time.

which referenced Dantonio's candidacy.  Look at this young man.  16 years is a long time, and anyone would age in that period, but it seems like Mack had that presidential accelerator thing going in his time at Texas

1997: University of Texas head football coach Mack Brown raises the "Hook 'em Horns" sign during an introductory news conference in Austin, Texas.
