Could Tarik Black return for bowl game?
Is it possible that Black could return for bowl pratices and the bowl game? I know people have listed him as a redshirt due to his injury, but I have my doubts that he would stay another four years based on his talent level. It doesn't seem to be a situaltion where burning his redshirt would matter in the long run, and any extra reps not only help the team in the bowl game but also in his developement for next year. Has anyone heard mention?

Whether he's healthy enough to go, I do not know. But if it impacts his medical redshirt to play in the Outback Bowl, I would prefer to sit him.

I agree that it will only be based on his medshirt status, because his foot has healed, but I disagree that we should pursue a medshirt for him. He won’t be around for 5 years, it’s better to get him practice and game reps now.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:09 AM ^
Can he practice but not play in the game and still preserve the medshirt?
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:10 AM ^
Yes he can. From what ive heard this is what coach is plannin. I dont have inside info though.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:30 AM ^
You’ve “heard” but don’t have inside info?
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:44 AM ^
for that new blog he writes for.
December 3rd, 2017 at 12:17 PM ^
Right bruh, ive "heard" from people who are more in tuned than me. Doesnt mean i have inside info.. sorry not gonna pretend to like alot of people seem to do here.

You’re saying this based on a promising first few games of the season? He has 11 receptions for 150 yards. I’m not saying it’s impossible or even unlikely he goes early, but it seems premature to act like that’s a forgone conclusion.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:26 AM ^
Based on how advanced he was for a freshman, the fact that he beat out a consensus five-star receiver, and was on pace for at least 600 yards. It's pretty clear that he's an NFL talent and will be there sooner than later barring another injury.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:33 AM ^
Maybe a late season injury in his senior season. Maybe we lose in the title game and he wants to come back for another shot at it. It seems that we gain very little by playing Black in the bowl game and take away potential options down the line. Those are more important even if the chances they come into play aren't great.

We've only had one receiver go pro after 3 seasons since David Terrell in 2000 (Manningham). He's young and has a ton of potential, but lets just pump the breaks a bit. I think it's relatively rare to have a freshman who's a lock to go pro early, especially after a season ending injury.
December 3rd, 2017 at 2:25 PM ^
Arrington had a medical redshirt for his sophomore year so he left early when he went pro in 2008, paralleling the scenario discussed here which is leaving with eligibility left not leaving after 3 years.
December 3rd, 2017 at 3:17 PM ^
Good call, I didn't consider that. I will say however that their early departures were also at a unique time due to Carr's retirement.

is also another

is another

I think AA's departure can be strongly linked to the RR arrival and Mallett departure. Manningham, on the other hand, was leaving for the NFL at the end of 2007. In fact, mentally, he was already gone during the 2007 season.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:17 AM ^
Issue is, if he decides not to stay a full 5 years, all you did was bench him an additional game where he could have helped your team.
December 3rd, 2017 at 5:39 PM ^
Dude needs to sit and use all the time available to get well. Win or Lose it isn't going to impact our season. Our season has already been labeled a rebuilding / transition year. Just rest up Mr. Black.
December 3rd, 2017 at 10:51 AM ^
Hope so.. be great for him and Brandon to build some chemistry for next year.
December 3rd, 2017 at 10:57 AM ^
The schtick getting too hard to maintain or is it tough to remember you have a schtick to play?
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:17 AM ^
His discipline is lacking. Franklin needs to work on staying in character.

Bullshit Amos 'n Andy routine is bullshit.

Your posts read the like the dialog of Harriet Stowe's field slaves. Writing black dialect (or whatever the hell stupid shit you're doing) is embarrasing. It doesn't make you look like a hood brutha, it makes you look like a dorky teenager desperate to fit in.
December 3rd, 2017 at 2:00 PM ^
Definitely. I don't know if the poster is white and if he is a guy with a Michigan bedspread and a closet full of Nike gear, but I have my suspicions. If so this whole play-acting thing is pretty bad.

Tick Tock.
December 3rd, 2017 at 4:16 PM ^
You ain't my 'bruh', so don't even play like that, WD. My days of supportng your shit are long past.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:17 AM ^
Say ''schtick" one more time.
December 3rd, 2017 at 12:28 PM ^
You sick bastard.
December 3rd, 2017 at 12:31 PM ^
Can we not call him "Brandon"? That name gives me bad feels... Like I'm somehow drawn to huge macaronis, or I'm about to run some organization into the ground, or misspell something in some horribly permanent way... Let's just agree to call him Peters...
December 3rd, 2017 at 12:50 PM ^
add the apostrophe, just for fun? Boom, Peter'sed
December 3rd, 2017 at 1:12 PM ^
No. Take back the name from the oppressor. Don't let the noodle man lord over the name “Brandon.”
December 3rd, 2017 at 10:58 AM ^
And take the redshirt. We are playing in the Outback/Holiday bowl, not the semi-final.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:17 AM ^
Game and practice reps for a freshman receiver are more important than a 5th year he won't use. I want him to go up against SEC DBs.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:00 AM ^
I hope that they play him. To get the extra practice and game reps, because i doubt that hes around for a 5th year. Hes too talented.
But anything less than 100 pct, and i hope they sit him. Call it drake harris shell shock, but black is too important a piece for the next 2 or 3 years to risk something that lingers.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:04 AM ^
If he can, he should not. He might be able to get a medical red shirt. A somewhat meaningless bowl game is not worth losing the medical red shirt.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:07 AM ^
Not if it risks a potential redshirt.
(And before the "he won't be here for a RS senior year anyway" crowd chimes in - - you have no way of knowing that. But one thing you DO know is he won't be here for a RS senior year if he burns it playing in this bowl game)
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:18 AM ^
It would take away his medical redshirt, obviously. I guess a separate question would be, do you believe that Black stays five years? I get your point that he won't be here for a fifth year if he plays in the bowl game, but I would rather have him play in the bowl game if the coaching staff believes he will be in the NFL before his fifth year.
December 3rd, 2017 at 6:45 PM ^
A lot of things can happen, injury-wise. Right now he qualifies easily for a medshirt. He could get hurt again in the future, later in a season. You never know. He might end up needing a 5th year to prove he’s healthy.
That said, if Black is ready and Peters is starting, then the coaches might see utility in having him play, to build chemistry for next year, also to help get him back to where he needs to be sooner rather than later.
December 3rd, 2017 at 1:13 PM ^
He won't be here for a petential RS Sr year.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:26 AM ^
I think he sits. It's the smartest go. I hear all the won't be here for 5th year people and I get it. But what if he has another injury during one of his next 2 seasons and he's burned his red shirt this season to play in am otherwise meaningless bowl Game? Seems irresponsible to me. Makes more sense chalk this season up as a win for getting him real run and also gaining additional eligibility by getting him a medshirt
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:50 AM ^
can I still redshirt for my 50th birthday?
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:49 AM ^
he could still get another one. Are you implying that he would get 2 medical redshirts and stay 6 years?
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:54 AM ^
You can redshirt any year. It’s just not likely (knock on wood) that he’ll get hurt like this again.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:26 AM ^
I'm assuming umbig11 knows whether Tarik will be preparing for the bowl game or if they shut him down for the whole year?
My guess is he won't play.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:32 AM ^
I agree that if he is 100% he should play. Anything less than 100%, he sits, because Drake Harris. Play because, well, he be too good(grammatically intentional) to stay for his full tenure.
GET THIS KID THE DAMN BALL, love this guy!
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:57 AM ^
Anything less than 100% -- why take a chance. But if he's 100%, well...he was looking like (maybe by far?) our best receiving option early on. I don't know about you, but I wanna win our bowl game. If Tarik is 100%, he'll give us a better chance to do just that.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:38 AM ^
Is the upside of a possible 5th year greater than the upside of him playing in a bowl game this year? No guarantees he sticks around for the 5th year but certainly a possibility he does. I wouldn't give up that upside if I was either Harbaugh or Black. I get the argument of reps with Peters before next spring but couldn't he practice with the team during bowl prep and keep the medical?
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:39 AM ^
NCAA doesn't grant medical redshirts for Michigan.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:45 AM ^
Yeah, have a kid blow his redshirt so he can play in a second-rate bowl game versus South Carolina. Good thinking.
