Confirmed: Devante Jones is out for Thursday, questionable for potential Saturday

Scanned the Indiana second half. Wow that was brutal. Did not see anything involving his head that would lead to believe the concussion was sustained during that game. Thinking it must have been a practice injury. Yes, we are talking about practice.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:36 AM ^
Didn't he take a fall that led to an "odd-man rush" the other way, after which they stopped play? Looked like he hit his head on the floor. Or was that the OSU game? A bit foggy myself...???
March 16th, 2022 at 11:44 AM ^
that was OSU. and yes, he hit his head hard and was done for a minute or two. possible that was the first concussion, and then he hit it again and had symptoms. just speculating, but glad you brought that up. definitely could have started things
March 16th, 2022 at 11:45 AM ^
He did take a fall that lead to a Jackson-Davis showtime dunk but he didn't hit his head.
In fact, the Indiana game may have been the only game this season where he did not hit his head on something or somebody.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:44 AM ^
It was, in fact, a practice injury. Per Juwan.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:54 AM ^
Maybe Juwan slapped him upside the head.
Funny
March 16th, 2022 at 12:24 PM ^
The second half injury was to his ankle and he left the game with Michigan up by 17 and came back when Indiana was making their run and cutting it to 10. I believe he struggled (turnovers) initially because he sat for extended time not moving the ankle but then the whole offense was just discombobulated.
Yeah it was supposedly practice, but he fell soooo many times in the second half of the Indiana game

Man I feel terrible for him. He worked so hard to get to this point and now something out of his control takes it away. Let's hope for his sake the team plays hard for him so he can experience it Saturday.
I do wonder if he'll be able to ride down tomorrow morning and at least sit with the team.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:54 AM ^
His place in Michigan basketball history, however small, is assured by his game in Columbus with a tourney spot on the line. My $0.02, anyway.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:04 PM ^
It would be a great sign if Jones was on the bench but when I have had students with concussions, they tend to avoid loud noise venues, i.e. gym or music class. So I would think he probably would avoid the arena for that reason...if he is there, that is a positive sign that he is getting over his concussion symptoms.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:07 PM ^
Yeah, if he is a point where he literally cannot travel with the team I don't think that bodes well for the second round.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:17 PM ^
Concussion protocol typically involved staying in as quiet an environment as possible so it's not likely he'd be with the team until ready to play
March 16th, 2022 at 11:34 AM ^
Great stage for Collins and Bufkin to shine. Let's advance so Jones can taste the Big Dance!
March 16th, 2022 at 11:34 AM ^
We got to the Elite 8 without Livers.
burn the schooners, boys!
And we make the Championship Game probably with him :(

March 16th, 2022 at 11:37 AM ^
Well fuck.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:38 AM ^
DeVante has impressed me as the season went on- he struggled a lot in the beginning but has shown he was super valuable to this team.
As far as this particular game goes- it will be won in the post. Dickinson has to dominate down low and kick it out to the shooters who can hopefully step up.
Collins was not a massive recruit for no reason. I'm really excited to see how he can handle extended minutes because he really hasn't had that opportunity yet. In the few opportunities he's had, he's been able to create a ton of chances at the rim- he can generally get past his man without a ton of trouble. Sometimes, given the spotlight, guys can shine- hopefully Collins will step up tomorrow and get them over the hump.
Shine in the spotlight you say? I once saw a kid who was named after his baseball cleats turn into Steph Curry in a national championship and then start hitting on Kate Upton. Life is weird in that way.
Yeah- you just never know.
Frankie hasn't been given extended run yet. Maybe this is what he's been waiting for? I dunno, just trying to be optimistic.
Against MSU at home Devante picked up 2 quick fouls early in first half and Frankie ran the point for the rest of the half and did a great job running the offense and also defensivly. So he's capable!
You might say it was Spike's...one shining moment.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:38 AM ^
man, i feel terrible for the guy. he finally fights his way to the big stage and bad luck knocks him out. what a drag.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:43 AM ^
Hopefully everyone on the team can have the game of their lives tomorrow and give DeVante a shot on Saturday
March 16th, 2022 at 11:45 AM ^
In a very, very weird way, I think this can spike the motivation of the team to get DeVante to the tourney.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:49 AM ^
It could. However, if he does not play against Tennessee I don't think motivation is going to matter. Tennessee is actually good this year, not fake-good like in the past. Barring outrageously good shooting from 3 I don't think Michigan will be able to keep pace to really even keep that game close.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:54 AM ^
Honestly, it's hard to differentiate what good vs fake good is.
I've seen some Tennessee teams in the tourney that have been stacked with talent. His 18-19 team had Schofield, Williams, and Bone- all elite-level college players. They didn't get out of the S16.
The common denominator has always been Rick Barnes. I don't care if they have 5 NBA players on their roster; for some reason, he's just never been a good tournament coach.
His 05-06 Texas roster was STACKED. AJ Abrams, LaMarcus Aldride, Daniel Gibson, PJ Tucker- and he didn't get past the E8. There's something about Rick Barnes and big situations- he just doesn't have it.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:59 AM ^
I can't argue with that.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:50 PM ^
Don't worry- few people can argue with the great uncle leo.
hahaha jk
March 16th, 2022 at 11:43 AM ^
Well that's a smack in the face. Seriously hope his health is ok, concussions can be tricky.
Go Blue! Time to shine Frankie
What an idiot. Even if she smacks him in the chest, at that angle it's not going to be flat, more likely taking an edge to the sternum.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:46 AM ^
Frankie definitely has the moxie to step in and lead this team. Let’s just hope he can knock down a shot or two and keep the defense honest.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:47 AM ^
Assumed Vegas would've known earlier... but the line was still -2.5 this morning when I checked due to the "rumor" post. Now down to -1.5, which is less impact than I expected from this news.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:51 AM ^
Terrible news. Hopefully, some valuable experience for Collins.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:53 AM ^
The hope now is that Frankie and Kobe come "of age" in the tournament. It's the perfect time to step up and be a 'hero'.
And ideally with a win, Devante can make it back for the round of 32.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:58 AM ^
Full speed and contact practice the day before they leave to begin the tournament. Okey dokey.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:17 PM ^
Juwan’s been part of college and NBA postseason play for 30 years (ditto Martelli) but hell, he doesn’t know as much about how to prep for the postseason as a random MGoPoster, of course.
I think it’s pretty normal to run some full-scale practices when you’ve got a week between games.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:34 PM ^
I know. I shouldn't have posted that. It's really just bad luck.
It's not football. Full speed basketball is relatively risk free and the benefits (fitness) far outweigh the costs.
It was just a fluke. And today they'll have a short-ish walkthrough. But you can't take the whole week off.
March 16th, 2022 at 11:53 AM ^
Michigan won without Hunter in C-bus so they are capable of winning without a key starter. I hope De Vante makes a complete recovery soon.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:05 PM ^
Here's to the crowd that was calling for him to be benched for the 1st 1/2 the season.....
March 16th, 2022 at 12:05 PM ^
Sucks for Devante. Really hoping they advance so he gets to play in at least 1 Tourney game.
Question, Even if he cant' play, why wouldn't he travel with the team? (A quick google seems to say its safe to fly with a concussion even if its not the best idea)
March 16th, 2022 at 12:09 PM ^
The take a bus to Indianapolis. The fact that he is not traveling would seem to indicate that he is not merely in concussion protocol but is actually having cognitive difficulties from the hit, I think. This just happened yesterday. The team "hopes" he will be available for Saturday if they win. I don't think he will be.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:22 PM ^
It's probably more of a sensory issue. Following a concussion, people are often sensitive to bright lights and loud noises. A packed NBA arena has both of those.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:29 PM ^
This makes sense, thanks.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:07 PM ^
Hope Devante' recovers fine.
This is the most Michigan thing ever.
March 16th, 2022 at 12:27 PM ^
Peppers down for the Orange Bowl
Dax almost down for the CFP
Livers out all of last year's tournament, which was likely the difference in the Elite Eight.
A starting Michigan QB seemingly going into the OSU game injured every single year before this one.
And now this.
I'm not so naive to think that injuries don't happen to every team at some point or another, but it is a bit coincidental for sure that key players seem to always go down at the worst possible times for Michigan.
