Coaching vacancies and Toledo's Matt Campbell

Submitted by Blazefire on
This is a little OT because it in no way refers to Michigan, but I thought this article on Matt Campbell at Toledo and his future was interesting. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/13984971/toledo-rockets-… Being from Toledo myself, I can tell you that at 500K he can live like a guy making 2M in some expensive city, so I'm not sure the money matters too much. Also, he notes that he already has a big time job. I don't know if I can argue that. It's not Michigan, but honestly, ask yourself; who gets more respect when they come to town these days? Toledo or Illinois.

As a UT alum I love Campbell and hope he stays around but with the current success plus the craziness that the coaching carousel will have this year, he gone.

Good article actually. I remember when Beckman left I spoke to a UT alum, and his comment to me was, "We kept the Offensive Coordinator, he's the brains of the operation." That turned out to be pretty prophetic.

The OP states

Being from Toledo myself, I can tell you that at 500K he can live like a guy making 2M in some expensive city, so I'm not sure the money matters too much.

I understand the point, as cost-of-living should always factor into job move decisions.

I'm not sure that's the whole story, though.  It assumes that living in Toledo is equivalent to living in any other town.  He may love living in Toledo, but ... he may not.  Just as important, his wife and family (assuming he has a wife and family) may want to live in another city.  Plus, once you buy your $600K mansion in Toledo, it's not going to grow in value like it will in most college towns.

Finally, there's an element of ego that goes into it.  Many of us have made career moves to make more money and advance our careers, even though it did not really impact the quality of our day-to-day lives.

Anyway, thanks for posting this.  Campbell certainly looks like a guy who will be talked about during the hiring season.

Based on salary.com COL wizard, "The cost of living in San Francisco, CA is 74.0% higher than in Toledo, OH . Therefore, you would have to earn a salary of $869,914 to maintain your current standard of living."

I'd take the promotion should one arise. But that's just me.

May be true. But we are only talking annual cost comparisons. You're not on a 12 month mortgage. Plus, the extra $370k annually is an extra $31k gross income a month. The difference between a $200k mortgage and a $2M mortgage is probably $10k/mo. Figure the extra $21k covers taxes, regular goods, etc. I still don't see how you think it can't be right.

The older I get, the more I can see why someone would refuse to climb the coaching ranks when they're already in a nice situation where they're highly valued.

I completely agree. It's not like he is going to walk into a situation where winning is the norm. It happens time and time again. Coaches find success at MAC-level schools and jump at the opportunity to try and find success at doormat programs with no avail. It all comes down to personal ambition and goals, but I would stay and win at UT before I would leave for a program like Illinois or Kansas. If you have enough success there, a better suitor will eventually come calling and the transition might be easier based on facilities, program history, etc.

I think Toledo should double his pay and raise his assistance pay and make University of Toledo a Nationally respected university much of the way Boise State did with Petersen years ago.

He lived on the same street as I in Perrysburg, lets just say I moved to a nicer neighborhood, he still there.

He's a humble guy, house is under 200K, loves his life.
