Charbonnet's 30+ carry game in perspective

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on September 10th, 2019 at 7:51 PM

Hasn't happened very often lately. Higdon had two games last year where he had over 30 rushing attempts.

Michigan is 47-7 in games where someone gets 30+ carries. 1949 is as far as the database goes back.

Remember that time A Train went all Tommy Reese (before Tommy Reese) against NW?

If only Fitz Toussaint would have gotten 3 more carries against Penn State...

Also, feed Mike Hart.

The story of Michigan football in the Carr years.  Could have/should have won or at least played for another 2 national titles.

So much talent, so much underachieving.  Had legit top 5 teams every year, hampered by turtle play calls and shit luck. In many ways, it was a simple continuation of the Bo years...should’ve, could’ve, would’ve. It took a transcendent talent (one of the greatest players in CFB history - Mr. Woodson), to keep us from “michiganing” our way into another 10-3 season in 97.

Clemson learned to get out of their way with Dabo and Jesus.  Unfortunately our football Jesus was only around for 3 years.

We need some fucking luck...and it won’t happen with this low variance football coaching where you turtle up after a few mistakes.

I’m an atheist, but it’s clear things around here need to change.  I vote more Jesus...or Baal, Zeus, Yahweh, or whatever metaphysical force gets us some good mojo.

It isn't surprising that we would have a winning record in games with an absurd amount of carries. Obviously you cant run it that much if youre losing (Unless youre Army)

Mike Hart 12-0 in games with 30 carries. Chris Perry 51 carry game lol. 51 carries in a game with Edwards, Breaston, and Navarre is actually surprising. Wasn't even raining either

Damn i miss  Biakabutuka, that game where he went 8.5 yards per carry against OSU lol.. wow

We just don't get gamebreakers like that any longer

WD - you are an awesome old soul!  That 1968 UW game was my first at UM with my Dad, which was a big deal replacing Mom in his season ticket seats. Ron Johnson that year was oustanding, maybe the greatest single season in rushing history for the Wolverines.  Big bruising back who had no quit and the stamina of an elite race horse. Thanks for the memory!

What a difference three weeks and a different rivalry game makes.  “Tim” Biakabutuka carries 37 times for 191 yards (5.2 YPC) in a 28-25 loss at Michigan State on November 4, 1995, and three weeks later he carries 37 times again, but then it was for 313 yards (8.5 YPC) in a 31-23 win over Ohio State!

This is the glass half full I take from this passed weekend:

At most other schools not named Michigan, we do not have a true freshman 5 Star RB able to step in and carry this load and eek out just enough for us to get the win.

Hoping there are some other freshmen that have yet to put their stamp on this season inspired by the performance of their classmate; and that they too can be an integral part of a successful season.

So we’ve won 21 straight in which a running back has gotten 30+ carries, and yet here we are questioning why we don’t throw it more... run the damn ball more Jim!

Michigan has, I believe, won the last 29 games in which a Michigan player rushed for 100 yards.

You have to go back to the October 12, 2013 Penn State game to find that streak broken (though Gardner gave it his best shot... and it was an OT loss).

I know, speed in space, this isn't want we want to hear, but if you can spread the defense and open the run game you can create passing lanes as well.

With Tom Brady at QB, a stud WR corps (Terrell, Walker, Knight...), and an OL loaded with future NFL players (including Hutch), the A-Train was somehow regularly held to modest YPC numbers in the 1999 season.

Mike DeBord, ladies and gentlemen.

Stud in development.  What frosh in America could man-up to 33 carries versus Army ?  Heck, like none.  We have something special in the works.  Need Wilson back and Turner to pick it up, but those 3 are the rising bedrock for the 2019 season.

Hey I remember the most recently loss on that list.  I may or may not have punched the cinder block wall in my Markley dorm room when A-Train fumbled.

I mean, that sure is a stat. Sadly it's the third least efficient day on the list, and also the only against a team not currently in a power 5 conference or Notre Dame.
