As a Detroit Lions fan living in Chicago, the only thing that could be worse than Harbaugh not coming to Michigan would be the awesome double whammy of him going to Chicago, making them awesome and simultaneously screwing both of my teams at once.

So I'm another Chicagoan and Bears fan. This is an interesting dynamic. First of all, I want Harbaugh at Michigan, period.

Having said that, the Bears are at an interesting point. While they are historically cheap, there are some parallels with Michigan.

  • Michigan, like the Bears, was historically cheap. For too long, there was the "This is Michigan . . . people should be grateful to come here" nonsense. Michigan is now opening their pocketbook, because they have been forced to.
  • Michigan, like the Bears, has had glory in the past. The Bears are one of the only two remaining original NFL franchises. They have more victories in the regular season and post season than any other team. The Bears have more players in the hall of fame than any other team. We all know Michigan's past glory. The point is, both teams have a fan base that wants a return to winning ways.
  • Michigan, like the Bears, have not been good in the last 5 or so years. This makes things worse, and creates more pressure to "get it right."
  • Michigan, like the Bears, is an attractive place to end up. Whoever brings Michigan (and the Bears) back to success can write their ticket. I could see a number of people finding both Ann Arbor and Chicago attractive.

I have no clue what Harbaugh will do. I have no clue what the Bears ownership will do. But if the Bears Matriarch Virginia McCaskey decides to go all in, this could be a hard fight for Michigan to win. The thing is, I haven't seen that she wants to do that.

I have a pessimistic outlook that I can't seem to shake today. Nothing's really at the root of it that I can tell. Maybe it's just the comedown from the euphoria last night.

at least with the Bears.

Jay Cutler (re: Cutler's contract and his woeful performances this year) is only a symptom of the problem.

The real issue with the Chicago Bears are the McCaskeys and that has been the issue for a very long time (going back at least to the 1980's, actually).

Has done a superb job with the Lions defense, the Bears are familiar with him, and the players love him. The Niners could also look at him.

Honestly, I'm more concerned about the Lions losing Austin than JH staying in the NFL. Michigan still has some very good options available. I'm not so optimistic about the Lions find a defensive coordinator as good as Austin again.

I think the Bears are a factor if he truly wants to stay in the NFL. I'm sure he believes enough in himself that he will finally be the one to fix Cutler even though Kap has begun his downward spiral. Therefore Cutler is not a factor.

Just an idea on my part but could Harbaugh look at all the teams in the NFL that will likely be after his services and become exhausted with the idea of rebuilding a franchise? For this reason I think Miami is the biggest threat. If they fire Philbin they can be playoff bound next year. I know everyone wants to believe Ross will leave Harbaugh alone but I dont see him doing that.

If Miami retains Philbin then maybe he looks around, feels uninspired by the other teams, looks at Michigan and decides he will feel energized to rebuild Michigan with the idea that the turn around should be quick. He stays at Michigan til the perfect NFL job comes calling

About 45 minutes outside of Chicago and have been a Bears fan my whole life. This is the worst team I have seen. Unless the mckaskeys sell the team it will never flourish. I don't believe harbaugh will be the next coach but I can't imagine him taking that job. That team is far from being competitive no matter who the coach is. The gm and the evaluation of talent is terrible. The qb is a joke, and our defense is worse than rich rods 3 3 5 with practice squad talent

who wants Harbaugh! But hopefully he decided to go the college route and will be coaching at Michigan. If he stays in the NFL, I think Miami will be his new team.

Stay in the NFL and coach at the highest level, or resurrect his alma mater to glory. I'm thinking if it's all about ego, there is no better option then building a monster again at a traditional power. You can either go to NFC championship games and a super bowl and be forced out of town when you have one subpar season, or you could go to the collegiate level and make just about the same amount of cash, be a hero, have statues made and buildings named after you. Come home Jim

But I really think it would be to the benefit of everyone's mental health if we look at this objectively. I don't think anyone can seriously argue that, from a pure prestige standpoint, being the head coach of Michigan would be a better job than being the GM and Coach of the Bears.

Michigan is great. We all love the school and the team and the helmets and the fight song, but it's still just a college team, in a lovely, but small college town. The Bears would give him the chance to win football's ultimate prize, as the head of one of the most storied franchises in professional sports, in one of the best cities in the entire world.

We can make the argument that the Bears are a mess right now, and he'd be walking into a reclamation project. But the NFL is the league of parity, and teams are always turning things around in one year. Hell, the Lions are doing it this year, and Harbaugh has already done it once with the 49ers. Perhaps the lunatic fringe of the UM fan base can see them reaching the CFP next year, but I think realistically we're looking at 2017 at the earliest.

Which brings us to the final argument: Things are different, because Harbaugh loves Michigan. This may be true, and as fans we can all relate to that. But then the question becomes, if Harbaugh loves Michigan, then why isn't he here now? His season with the 49ers is effectively over. They can't make the playoffs, and no one would blame him if he left a dysfunctional situation before coaching two final, meaningless games. The Michigan job would be his right now, if he truly wanted it. Maybe it is a sort of pride, and he doesn't want to give up on his team. But to me, the only natural conclusion is that he's waiting to see all his options. And if that's the case...if his love for Michigan isn't automatically going to override any other job offer, and it doesn't happen this week, then I have to believe it's not happening (.gif)

is equally in tune with my opinion above. He knows. The only reason for him not being here yesterday is not wanting to burn bridges/be a pro/not quit OR he's weighing options soon. If weighing options, he is not our guy. He doesn't have a few days to decide to go somewhere he's never been. It's been a month (let's say he does the noble thing) and it's Michigan. He's in or out by default of hearing other NEW offers. It's not hard. He's human.

Michigan doesn't need to worry about other NFL jobs; they need to worry about Harbaugh wanting to come back to college.  If he does, then there isn't likely an NFL job opening up that will change that calculus.

I don't see why Jim can't come back to Michigan for 10 years, get the team back to greatness, and then take his pick of teams in 2025. He's only 50 years old. Coaching Michigan until he's 60, leaving a lasting legacy as the prodigal son of Bo coming back and resurrecting the program, and then spending his last 5-10 years of coaching chasing a super bowl seems like a giant win for everyone. 60 is not old at all by coaching standards as far as being effective and successful.

We need to accept that there will be NFL openings.  Harbaugh's agent will create a bidding war.  Hackett and the Athletic Department simply need to win that war.

After two coaches that didn't work out and a decade of getting our asses kicked, we are in a place where we desparately need to to beat the NFL for a coach.  It is not a good place at all, but its where we are.  All that is left is whether Michigan can get it done or not.

Those who do not remember the past trolling are condemned to repeat it...or something like that.

I actually feel sorta bad for MichBro[insert #]. One needs a fairly thick skin to build a brand (in a non-Brandon sort of way)--the internet remembers your mistakes and lows far more than the correct answers and highs. I didn't read all of the posts, but he seemed to take the criticism of FootballScoop quite personally. Even if he was the equivalent of Brian for that site, defending it in the way he did made it worse--causing the internet to remember the meltdown long after nobody reading FootballScoop would even remember that a few MGoBlog posters said something on MGoBlog.

My post above was having a little fun at FootballScoop's expense; hopefully FootballScoop's fans rally around it and learns from this amusing episode.

HIGHLY doubt the Niners would send him elsewhere in the NFC to haunt them for what's sure to be the middling draft pick/s that his price will end up being. The Niners play the Bears a minimum of once every three years plus potential crossover matchups in the off years and playoff games. Sure, they'd probably do it for a first round pick but I don't think anyone is paying that (nor would Harbaugh want them to).

raiders are a better gig. hear me out. both owners suck. but raiders have been more irrelevant for longer hence more likely to turn over total control. i dont see the mccaskeys giving up control. plus the bears will face rogers and stafford and bridgewater for 5 yrs. raiders -- both rivers and manning are near end of productive careers and kc has no one. so riaders have a better opportunity in the future. (in LA or san anton).

harbaugh would not take the Bears job for one reason: The Halas/McKaskey family ownership is second to last in competence, just ahead of the Fords. Sure, theyve won a few more titles and playoff games than the Lions, but still they're morons and they hire morons to run the team.

I haven't read through all the comments but I think most are missing the point. If Jim leaves the NFL its just like when Saban left Miami. Sick of entitled players who are each their own LLC. Getting back to a pure place would have to factor in his decision to leave the pro's.

A former talk radio host here in Seattle was the only reporter in the room during Cutler's hilarious post game press conference last week. In the course of talking about that, he mentioned that the beat writer for the Bears he talked to is assuming that Harbaugh will be their next coach.

I realize the value of this little tidbit is close to zero, but everyone's so eager for any new information, so I guess it can't hurt to pass it along.

Even if he is traded, cant he still just quit and take the Michigan job if he really wanted it?

Honest question...

If the 49ers were to trade Harbaugh wouldn't they have to wait until after the Super Bowl when the new NFL year begins since the trade deadline has already passed? Or is that thrown out of the window when you're getting compensation for a coach?
