CC: Rumors and Harbaugh open thread

And in summary: still looks good but not at all definitive, so let's not repeat the Herbstreit debacle from last time so everybody needs to just STFU and give Hackett and Harbaugh the breathing room they need so they have an opportunity to get something done in peace.

Moss just tweeted that his REAL source has told him to keep his phone by him all day.

Apparently he thinks something major will happen?

Are we really getting suckered in by Jeff Moss and Greg Hensen?  Be smarter than that people, I think there was likely some good news, but there is almost no chance Moss or Hensen is going to scoop legitimate members of the media on a story this big.

And leaking the numbers is very very bad for us.  Sets a baseline for MFL teams to blow away.  What if Oakland comes in at 8 years $75 Million this week now after hearing our offer leaked?  You have to wonder if Harbaugh's agent leaked numbers to start a bidding war, it's kind of his job to do that.

that there has been no contact whatsoever between Harbaugh and Wheatley about anything relating to coaching at Michigan. Webb is a friend of Ty's and talks with him on a very frequent basis, and is not just a reporter contact. All the stuff about Wheatley as OC is bullshit.

Just to be clear, I am NOT anyone's source in M coach search, & I am NOT telling anyone Harbaugh is the guy. Rumors to contrary are false.

I know Mike and Mike are not loved around here, but this morning they talked about Harbaugh as a possibility in Chicago given how terrible the season is going. They blamed Phil Emery, the GM, for a lot of the issues which would make it interesting - giving Jim either a say in a new GM or control. I grimaced when I heard it, but something's gotta give in Chicago, and I hope it isn't Harbaugh. 

The more I think about it the more it's clear it is NOT in our interests to engage in the rumors on this board. First, it's irresponsible because they may not be true. Better to observe than to perpetuate untrue rumors. Second, it doesn't increase the chance of Harbaugh coming here even if he is inclined. Getting Harbaugh to coach at Michigan is like trying to get pandas to mate in captivity. We need to create the right environment (which we have with $$$, prominent alumni support, political support within the Athletic Department, and with undeniable support from the fan base through Internet and social media). And then we need to just leave them alone so the magic can happen. Having a crowd staring at them the whole time with our collective noses and hands pressed against the glass screaming DO IT DO IT DO IT will not help matters at this point.
