CC (?) OT: Feldman's Top Ten
Bruce Feldman recently listed his top ten "coveted" coaches this year. Here is the link http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/blog?name=feldman_bruce&id=5870634, but I warn that it is insider content. He limited it to head coaches only.
In brief he list is (intentionally did not include Patterson or Peterson).
1. Jim Harbaugh, Stanford
2. Dan Mullen, Miss. St.
3. Brady Hoke, SDSU
4. Randy Edsall, UConn
5. Kevin Sumlin, Houston
6. Al Golden, Temple
7. Troy Calhoun, Air Force
8. Kyle Wittingham, Utah
9. Mike Haywood, Miami (Ohio)
10. Mario Cristobal, FIU
Obviously, people around here are going to focus on #1, which is why I included the CC in the title, but I guess I am more interested with the other 9 names. Outside Whittingham, isn't the list a little underwhelming?

OMG DOES THAT MAKE HIM A FIVE STAR? LET'S GET HIM BECAUSE WE DON'T GET MANY OF THOSE AROUND HERE!
/s, but not directly at the OP. Thanks for posting.
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:53 PM ^
We'd just move him to guard anyway.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:03 PM ^
just because he's number one at his position doesn't make him a five star!
see: Devin Gardner (Rivals) Dee Hart (Rivals)

The real question is do you think Brandon will be able to take some of those lesser coaches and administrate them up to a higher level?
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:11 PM ^
Yeah but a Michigan offer would move him down to a 4 star
December 2nd, 2010 at 7:18 PM ^
stubby legs don't get 4 stars!
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:46 PM ^
should hire Mario Cristobal, dude with a last name that sounds like Crystal ball we would win all the time.
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:53 PM ^
Well... Actually Huet didn't play in the playoffs... but we still had a guy named Cristobal on the team
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:46 PM ^
I'll take Greg Schiano, where is he #3 or #4 or someth.......oh wait.
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:48 PM ^
I sound like a broken record but I'll say it again: Dan Mullen.
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:48 PM ^
For some reason, on my computer screen, I cannot see anyone listed at #1. Strange.
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:18 PM ^
I know we don't talk about points, but where did you get all of those points!!111!!!?
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:25 PM ^
it says you have over a million points. How were you just given +1000000. And where can I learn how?
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:54 PM ^
named Cristobal. Name him as DC. I mean imagine the possibilities.
The Wizard of Snake Oil and his Cristobal.
Edit: Beaten to the punch, sorry.

No Les Miles on the list?
Why are people clamoring for Jim Harbaugh and not Les Miles? Miles is a Michigan man, and seems to have done pretty well at his current job. Before advocating for the firing of our current coach, wouldn't it be wise to see if Miles is interested?
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:59 PM ^
May not be on the list because Feldman said he wasn't going to include guys he thought were highly entrenched at their current positions, like Meyer or Saban. Maybe he doesn't see Miles leaving, even though the love for Les is waning in the Bayou.
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:59 PM ^
Dude eats grass. Do not want.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:03 PM ^
Because nobody wants the Michigan program run like a SEC program off the field.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:18 PM ^
But Less is a Michigan Man!! He's only playing by SEC rules to compete at his current job!
I mean......aren't there a lot of Michigan fans who've disliked Rich Rodriguez simply because he isn't Less Miles?
(apparently I didn't lay the sarcasm on hard enough in my above post)

What an unimpressive list.
Aside from the guy who is at #1, and possibly the guy at #3, if I were a D1 AD considering making a coaching change, there is nobody on this list that would make me tingly on the inside.
I guess that was sort of Brian's point in the mailbag that just got posted.
But, one thing to remember, not every "available" coach is going to appear on one of these lists. Back in 2007, RR would have never been on anyone's list because he was perceived as being wedded to WVU.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:08 PM ^
The list may not be that impressive, but not sure why the OP and others are dismissing Dan Mullen. Look at the decline of Florida's offense since he left. With all due respect to Jimmy, he might have the brightest future of anyone on that list.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:10 PM ^
Is solid, and maybe even more than solid, so I should have probably included him with Whittingham. But the rest of the list, outside Cristobal's wicked name, seems underwhelming.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:22 PM ^
If Brandon hired any but the top two, he would make nearly everyone unhappy. He also would be risking his own job should the hire not work out. As for Mullen, he is a hot name (and rightfully so), but with no ties up North it is a roll of the dice to expect that he would be at UM for long if we hired him and he was a successful. My prediction is that Mullen would go back to FL or LSU (or some top tier SEC school) as soon as one of those jobs became available and the school offered enough money.
Which leaves Harbaugh. The possible availability of Harbaugh is the sole reason RR is still at risk of being canned this year. Harbaugh's success at Stanford is impressive and Dave Brandon has a very difficult decision to make. The right decision is to give RR at least one more year, but the appeal of Harbaugh is obvious and strong. I hope Brandon makes the right decision.
[Edit: Rittenberg is making a huge mistake to leave Chris Petersen off the list. He would be a great fit if RR is fired and, given the evaporation of the "New and Improved MWC", he might be open to leaving BSU for the right opportunity.]

Mullen is from Pennsylvania and has connections up north. Also GA'd at ND and coached at Bowling Green. He has plenty.
December 2nd, 2010 at 4:28 PM ^
I just looked at his bio and you are correct -- he grew up near Philly, went to HS in New Hampshire and went to college at a small school that I have never heard of before (Ursinus), also near Philly. He also was a graduate assistant for two years at ND (1999-2000) and QB coach or two years (2001-2002) under Urban Meyer at Bowling Green.
But Mullen has spent the past seven years as OC/QB coach for Urban Meyer at Florida (2005-2008) and as HC at Mississippi State (2009-2010). I stand by my statement that it is a crap shoot to expect to him to stay at UM for the long term if he has the opportunity to go back to the SEC as HC at a top tier school. He has more (and far more significant) time logged coaching in the South. I cannot read his mind, so it is just my opinion, but my opinion is based on his coaching experience to date.

But "reasonable" and "untouchable" are not the same thing. This is Feldman's list of coaches who will be coveted and have a "reasonable" chance to be coaching elsewhere.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:22 PM ^
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:26 PM ^
but, he didn't make this list specifically for UM. Its just a list of the most "coveted" guys who will be probably looking to move....which is why he chose not to include Peterson or Patterson, he doesn't feel they will be looking to move.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:45 PM ^
Harbaugh is looking to move, unless Michigan (or the NFL??) came calling. Therefore, you might as well open the list to all coaches that might move if the right person knocked on their door and that is, pretty much, all coaches.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:15 PM ^
Bullshit. Feldman's REAL Top 10...
1. Stand By Me (1986)
2. The Goonies (1985)
3. The Lost Boys (1987)
4. Gremlins (1984)
5. License to Drive (1988)
6. Meatballs 4 (1992)
7. Rock 'n' Roll High School Forever (1991)
8. The 'burbs (1989)
9. Friday the 13: A New Beginning (1985)
10. Blown Away (1992)
*Honorable mention: Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008) and Lost Boys: The Thirst (2010)
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:18 PM ^
I love The Goonies. That is all.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:34 PM ^
Jesus, there was a Meatballs 4??? I didn't even know there was a Meatballs 3.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:57 PM ^
I didn't know there was a Meatballs 2.
Meatballs the original was awesome.
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:47 PM ^
Meatballs 2 lacked top-end savoriness. no sugarcoat.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:55 PM ^
Blown Away should move up on that list. It's not top 3 material but I'd put it at 5, maybe even 4. The plot is ridiculous, but who paid attention to the plot? I don't know if Nicole Eggert (Charles in Charge, Baywatch) had her clothes on at any part of that movie.
And I realize I opened myself to ridicule for being able to credit Eggert with Charles in Charge and Baywatch.
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:02 PM ^
Feldman's assumption that Harbaugh would move (not saying I agree) is that Luck will go to the NFL.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:26 PM ^
1. Rich Rodriguez
1a. Jim Harbaugh
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:48 PM ^
You forgot 1b. Rich Rodriguez.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:41 PM ^
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:11 PM ^
But either way, no way DB fires RR unless Harbaugh has tattooed a block-M on his forehead (so to speak). Strongly doubt we trade RR for Hoke.
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:08 PM ^
that Randy Shannon isn't going to jump to a new HC gig right away? I'd put him above Hoke.
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:12 PM ^
I am a lifelong Michigan fan, but live in Starkville, MS, teach at the university, and have season tickets to MState games. Dan has been incredible. He makes bold statements and then backs them up. His only two home losses came to Auburn (17-14) and Arkansas (in 2OT). He has the players convinced that they can win the SEC and has improved recruiting. I love Michigan football. Don't take Dan Mullen from the other program I love.
