Devin Brown is in the portal…

Devin Brown is in the portal/already transferred as far as I know.

edit: I guess after a quick google he isn’t? Must have been prematurely reported

They don’t really have a…

They don’t really have a room full of 5 stars this year as you would think. They have McCord, Devin Brown who was the other contender transferred, they then have an Oregon State transfer for depth, and 4 star Lincoln Kleinholz. They do have an incoming 4 star as well. Not the loaded room they did have the last two years.

edit: I could have sworn Brown entered the portal. Either way he was a 4 star.

That’s the thing with McCord…

That’s the thing with McCord, he likely won’t look terrible because of the offense and skill players around him. I’m hoping for the unlikely to happen and it’s obvious for the first time in like 15 years or so they actually don’t have an elite QB, at least at the college level. A man can dream of course.

This might be the year we…

This might be the year we finally see them at 3 losses, perhaps more after the bowls. Obviously not banking on it but something seems different with this QB replacement, along with what looks like a questionable OL and defense.

The rivalry means a bit more…

The rivalry means a bit more for JJ. “I used to love them, now I want to kill them.”

isn’t that a Guns and Roses song?

If we’re talking last year…

If we’re talking last year that high powered offense only scored 3 points in the entire second half. At home. When they were supposedly “angry” or something after the previous year.

Sometimes I miss it. I don’t…

Sometimes I miss it. I don’t know if it’s nostalgia or legitimate. It was fun when the magazines started coming out. Street and smith, Lindy’s, Phil Steele, Athlon, SI etc. You could still learn about the new guys but intrigue remained. It was fun to see their rankings going into the year, Heisman hopefuls and all America teams.  If you go around the interwebs now you get almost too much info and start micro-analyzing everything. It’s almost too much, clouds rational judgement. Knowing a guy is a little immature in high school or something similar  isn’t knowledge I should really have or need to know about some random person.

This sounds great but I’m…

This sounds great but I’m willing to expect better in the future. Purdue wasn’t even ranked to start the year and they got to a #1 seed and lost in spectacular fashion. We struggled all year but didn’t ever get embarrassed like that. They have the two banners which makes it a tough comparison. I’ll go with Purdue is victim of easily the biggest choke upset in March madness history and their BIG titles will be forgotten ultimately. This won’t be however. Plus their program is known for this already. Just ask a Purdue fan. I believe they have the most overall success in the Big Ten.

What make it sweeter is…

What make it sweeter is beating extremely talented/good OSU teams to get there. No BS about backing into or not deserving these titles. A three peat in the B1G would be so satisfying, especially if this is the year we at least win the first game and play for the NC. Winning it all would be oh so fucking sweet though. It would piss off so many other fanbases to have to deal with all of us after a championship run in this current system. Plus that alone would make it special. The last NC of the 4 team playoff era. I’ll come down to earth a bit and hope for at least another OSU win and B1G championship. At least then we have the opportunity in front of us for the ultimate goal.

It’s crazy because we all…

It’s crazy because we all know this as it’s literally on camera. There is no argument for it or subjectivity to it. Just a horrible job by the ref crew and infuriating how it wasn’t fixed immediately.

I think it was yesterday…

I think it was yesterday that he said he tweeked something and would need to run well at his pro day now.

I saw a mock for next year…

I saw a mock for next year that had him top 10. Obviously early but I think he’s going to be a big time prospect and high quality DB for a kind time in the NFL.

I want to say Darell Green…

I want to say Darell Green and the famous Bo Jackson had “unofficial” sub 4.2 times. I think hand timed not laser?

By default as you say then…

By default as you say then winning this game should absolutely matter. That’s literally the difference between those games you’re referring to. By your logic if we were up by one point and Wisconsin missed that same three then that game doesn’t change the ‘growth’ of the team for you either. It makes no sense especially when pointing out the 6-2 record and how they’re closing out this season. Which I’ll mention is now the most pressure filled part of the schedule for this team.

So we’re 6-2 in February,…

So we’re 6-2 in February, 2nd place in the conference, as others have pointed out top ten in Torvik this month, multiple players have improved as you said yourself, but because we finally won a crazy one possession game we now haven’t improved and the games we barely lost are the only games that matter? This is with one of the youngest teams in the country playing? Without Jett at the moment as well? Gtfo with that take. Hot garbage,

Don’t forget Illinois. Those…

Don’t forget Illinois. Those dudes hate us in basketball at least recently. However dumb it may seem.

Hey if we make the tourney…

Hey if we make the tourney and go an another run to S16 or better i think we’re seeing a trend of JH teams having a floor of not great regular season but performs in the tournament and a ceiling of the right players will bring a one seed. We still performed just about up to expectations as a one seed despite losing our most important player before it started. If we had Livers I would have no doubt we beat UCLA, and had a good to great chance against Gonzaga. Baylor idk they looked awesome destroying the Zags so I’m not going to assume anything there.

This is not someone whose…

This is not someone whose mind will be changed no matter what anyone says. Not that it matters anyways. It can’t be fun being a ‘fan’ of a team that you can’t even enjoy a huge, very exciting win like this one. How someone could come out of this in a shit mood making an asinine argument is beyond me, and most all of us it looks like.

They’re 6-2 at the tail end…

They’re 6-2 at the tail end of the year. They won this game. Without a first round pick playing. How is this not development? Obviously you’re dead set on being Debbie Downer right now. In some ways you could be making a solid point regarding how over the whole season if they could have grabbed a couple including (VA) wins in those one possession losses we would be looking much better. Or said another way teams get discounted too much for losing a one score game and get too much credit for winning. The growth here is winning 6 of the last 8 in conference play, In crunch time trying to make the tourney. No Jett either right now. You’re very clearly taking the negative point of view and won’t even consider the facts laid out to you. It doesn’t matter what anyone says to you it’s not good enough. They’re now 2nd place in the conference for ffs. How about you explain to all of us who know nothing in plain English why we’re wrong to be happy about this and the teams progression and please don’t mention the UVA game and nothing else for your expert take,

Edit: also, if you acknowledge multiple players improving how is that not tangentially related to the team also being better?

I don’t see it being that…

I don’t see it being that deep. They hadn’t called a DPI/Holding call all game. If that play was the only one all game and that was the requirement to be called I don’t buy it for a second. I think that’s the biggest issue here.

I don’t even think it has to…

I don’t even think it has to be a tin foil hat conspiracy. It was just a shit call. Why the guy decided to throw the flag i don’t know. I do know that I watched the game, and if that call was the only thing a ref saw all game to call a penalty on I don’t buy that for a second. It’s honestly like they waited until the most important time to finally call something. It’s tied, game on the line, if I see something I’m going to call it. Even if I let them play the entire rest of the game. Again, I’m not a fan or hater of either team. It was an awesome game that was ruined at the end by shit refereeing. No NFL wants Mahomes and the Chiefs to win from me.

Right. If this was the most…

Right. If this was the most egregious defensive hold in the game, which apparently it was, I’ll eat my fucking hat.

Looking over the different…

Looking over the different comments I still just don’t see it. If Mahomes completes a first down on that play does that ref still throw the flag? It just doesn’t look good, made a possible all time great Super Bowl lesser via refs deciding to jump in at the end. We’ve all seen way more egregious DPI/Holding go uncalled many times. The fact is penalties occur on most plays, good refereeing is essentially being consistent. I feel like that call was determined by the outcome of the play. When they didn’t convert the flag came out. That’s the epitome of a ref influencing a game. Like an NBA defender  not getting the foul called on them because the guy  hit that contested three.

I’m extremely confident if…

I’m extremely confident if you examined every passing play and watched each DB/WR battle you would find a lot of exactly this. Very minor contact at some point in the route. The flag coming late is the worst part. If this ref saw him commit the penalty the flag should have already been thrown anyways, and many would have just said well shit that’s game pretty much. The delay seems to show a decision to throw the flag based on the outcome of the play. If Mahomes completed a pass for a first down would that flag have been thrown?

It appeared to do nothing…

It appeared to do nothing from what I saw. It’s difficult to even see a tug versus his hand just on his back. I’m sure there probably was a slight grab of jersey but wtf. Acting like this was some egregious desperate penalty to avoid a TD is absurd.

What? This has got to be the…

What? This has got to be the only comment I’ve seen anywhere that makes this dubious claim.

Isn’t there a King of the…

Isn’t there a King of the Hill episode very similar to this?

I didn’t really care who won…

I didn’t really care who won myself. I don’t hate either team or anything. I look at what you saw and see it as they were letting the teams play the whole game and not interfering really unless it was necessary. Then when the game was actually in a position to be taken by a team the whistle comes out. On a really soft call. If the DB had white gloves on it might have been enough alone to not call it. That’s ref’s having way too much influence. As Putin said earlier, that’s a call that the second you see it you either throw a flag or don’t. Waiting to see if they convert before throwing the flag is what bothers me. I’ve heard NBA refs can be like this with shooting fouls. Literally deciding if they are going to call it based on whether the shot goes in or not.

This is a great point that I…

This is a great point that I haven’t heard a lot. Clearly the ref saw the hand on his back, but he didn’t throw the flag until the completion of the play, meaning when it failed and was going to be 4th down. There’s no reason the flag shouldn’t have already been thrown, but it was a late flag after the play concluded. Why wouldn’t you throw that flag the second you saw it? That’s how penalties usually work. I’m willing to bet a lot of folks like me would have already seen the flag and said that’s game right there and not been particularly upset about it. It’s the delay that really makes it appear the flag was only thrown because the play ultimately failed.

This is a good description…

This is a good description IMO. There was no real impact, it didn’t change anything about the play. If the game was being called one way the entire time and then on the last drive, on 3rd and long they call some soft penalty like that, one that essentially hands the Chiefs a Super Bowl is kinda dodgy to me. It left a bad impression on me. Just be consistent. They still can kick a FG and stop the Eagles for the win. It felt like refs, and I’m not saying it was on purpose or anything, wound up having the biggest impact in the end. It shouldn’t be like that in the final championship game. Mahomes threw the ball away and got bailed out by a technicality correct but weak as fuck call.

It definitely ruined the…

It definitely ruined the game for me. It was such a good game and was heading for a classic finish, just like that it was literally done. On some soft whistle they weren’t calling all game. It had no impact on the play whatsoever. I bet JuJu didn’t even realize he touched him. I wasn’t really rooting for a team either, but that really annoyed me. It really felt like a bail out that guaranteed a Chiefs win barring something crazy happening. Plus Hurts outplayed Mahomes overall IMO. I mean if he tackled the guy or blatantly committed the penalty out of desperation I would get it. Of course it doesn’t mean the eagles would have won but they should have had their chance, and we all lost out on a potential epic ending to a great game.

Thanks homie. I was right in…

Thanks homie. I was right in the middle of it without actually knowing exactly what ‘I’m in the middle of it was’ at the time.

Hey guys. I’ll jump in here…

Hey guys. I’ll jump in here since I spent my day on campus here in EL. Shits crazy. I was on campus working right there during all of this, and live in a neighborhood right here as well. I’ve never in my life (39 years) living here seen anything like it. Police from all around flying up and down Shaw, Wilson, Red Cedar etc. Then seeing parts of Saginaw close really showed how serious it was. Most of the town has been overrun (in a good way) by police. Helicopters flying overhead. I got back home a little after 9 and have heard gunshots, choppers, and non stop sirens. Police were flying up and down campus streets at 50 MPH, thru red lights, dodging traffic. We also just recently had a suicide victim discovered at recess of Cornell elementary, followed by a hoax shooting event called in last week at a Okemos High School.

I’m very interested to see…

I’m very interested to see if this weird statistical trend, as some see it to be, continues the rest of the season. This Reddit post has made it pretty damn far already. If JJJ’s numbers at home drop to a more normal level historically all of a sudden right now that would say a lot.

Another user looked at some numbers and comparisons with other players in the league.

All of this just started…

All of this just started gaining traction. The OP on Reddit apparently posted this on r/nbastats 9 days ago but that sub is very small. They posted it again at like 3 am to r/nba and it has since blown up. It’s something that’s happening right now. Of course there’s going to be a bunch of pushback online. I’m hoping by Monday it’s getting some real attention because it seems to be an issue worthy of addressing. Plus it’s not even a new issue, just a well avoided one. There are other stories and examples of exactly this happening.

I’m 96% sure this is correct

I’m 96% sure this is correct

It’s not really a conspiracy…

It’s not really a conspiracy. This kind of stuff has gone in in the NBA apparently for a long time. I honestly had never really heard about it myself but it makes perfect sense. I just always thought there were NBA folks verifying stats and correcting mistakes. It appears that isn’t the case and stats can be manipulated fairly easily. Probably because they don’t want to or care to address it. Wild considering the betting implications.

I actually lol’d at that one…

I actually lol’d at that one when I saw it. Good call there. You’ve obviously spent a little time reading through the post.

No, I don’t believe that…

No, I don’t believe that. That large of a discrepancy would essentially mean that either  A.) JJJ just decides to be extremely good at home and not on the road or B.) the stats are artificially inflated. Considering his typical road/home performance, which can be seen by anybody who wants to spend the time, is not in the ballpark of this season I would consider it pretty statistically relevant.

This is a TIL moment for me…

This is a TIL moment for me. Kinda blows my mind. Basically saying we will manipulate stats and it doesn’t matter and we don’t care so go away.

If you can find a…

If you can find a discrepancy that large, with a starting player from one year to another I’d like to see it. As I said, last year his splits were only about 10% less on average on the road. This year he’s almost double the number of *stocks at home versus on the road. That isn’t just an anomaly.

*stocks being blocks+steals combined

Oh and IF I could actually…

Oh and IF I could actually edit the OP I’d like to add I’m not insinuating JJJ himself is involved. It sort of reads that way.

interesting and relevant.

There’s actually a lot of…

There’s actually a lot of interesting information in the comments. There’s a lot so sorting it by best to start helps. I personally haven’t really heard much about inflating stats. Apparently this has been a thing in the NBA for awhile now. I don’t understand how something like this has gone under the radar for so long. Maybe this is the time where someone just went too far with it and it’s going to be exposed to a larger amount of the sports world. I mean the other explanation for why his home stats are SO much better than his road stats this year particularly is that he just decided to be better at home. That’s how big the difference in his stats is. Also he’s coming off a broken foot this season as well if that means anything.

This is exactly it. You can…

This is exactly it. You can’t explain that away. It’s a huge statistical anomaly. As proven by looking at his previous seasons.

It also appears Vegas hadn’t…

It also appears Vegas hadn’t noticed as their over/under on prop bets for his blocks/steals was not significantly different on the road. Also after this started spreading odds have changed for the DPOY award candidates. Some places pulled different prop bets etc. temporarily or again changed odds. It’s interesting and apparently not considered uncommon. Maybe this will bring attention to it. If it’s true these scorekeepers are directly influencing stats that’s kind of a big deal. It seems to be accepted by many that it does in fact exist and has for awhile outside of this event.

I don’t think it has to mean…

I don’t think it has to mean that. Not impossible though I guess. I don’t think anyone right now is really alleging that.

Yeah this guy did his…

Yeah this guy did his homework. Not just some shitpost on Reddit.

Yes. The NBA would be fine…

Yes. The NBA would be fine with it too. The real problem is with the gambling advantages had by being able to directly manufacture stats. Blocks, steals, assists are all easily manipulated. Especially when no one is apparently verifying the stats. Old story is John Stockton always got favorable credit for assists at home for instance. You basically hammer the over on blocks/steals every home game and the under on the road. He also theoretically made him the DPOY favorite if true. Which you can also bet on of course.
