CC: Kevin Sumlin still attractive ?

Submitted by Magga Saraivah on

In the past many on this board have pushed for Michigan to look at Kevin Sumlin as a potential head coach.  I have never been a big Sumlin fan but think he definitely knows offense. The question is whether he can build a good defense.

With 3 straight bad losses (but to very good teams), including the 59-0 implosion against Alabama, he is beginning to look a little shaky.

Would you still like to see him as a potential candidate should the HC position open up ? I highly doubt he would even consider leaving A&M but was wondering if he has lost some of his appeal in the past 3 weeks.

Go Blue !  Beat State !

At this point, you have to wonder about that defense. They get good talent there and his units still struggle. Sounds like someone else around these parts.

Tate Forcier here....

I think Kevin (we talk on first name basis) is the man for the job.  With that said, not the Michigan job.  He yells too much and might bench me.  I will have to hang that towel over my head again if I don't perform.  DO NOT WANT.

Signed,

Robert.

A&M is horrible this year. No thank you.

We need someone who is going to come in and kick ass immediately.

Can't we skip a head coach with a separate OC and DC and just divvy up the money pay a shit ton for the best OC and best DC and call them co-head coach?

I believe Matt Hinton touched on this earlier in the week in an article on Grantland. He wondered if A&M would regret that big contract extension they gave Sumlin. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. That beat down by Bama was ugly.

If he gets fired from A&M this year and our new coach needs an OC, then I'd take him in a heartbeat. He can certainly score points, but the guy has just never been able to field a defense, and it looks like he struck gold with having a guy like Manziel. That beat down on South Carolina looks less impressive each week simply due to the fact that South Carolina is a bad team this year.

Granted, the jury is still out and he's got time to turn this season around. They've lost to 3 very good teams, but losing 59-0 to Alabama? Wow, not even we were that bad. Sumlin's recruiting extremely well so the offense at least should still be very good going forward, but if he can't field a defense, I don't really want him.

Todd Graham and Sumlin had identical records in Conf USA over 4 years.  Sumlin had the benefit of taking over Art Briles system.

Todd Graham @ ASU

dFEI

2012: 31

2013: 22

2014 - (current 32) team lost 9 starters on defense and is starting 3 TRUE freshman (1 DT, 1 LB, 1 CB).  Again 3 true freshman, 9 new starters.

QB comparison?

Sumlin got Manziel when he arrived at A&M - who had offers from Oregon, Baylor, and Stanford among others.

Graham got Taylor Kelly when he arrived at ASU - a 2 star kid whose only offer was Nevada.

oFEI

2013: 6

2014: (current 7) with a backup QB running it against USC, Stanford, and UCLA, as Kelly was hurt and is out.

Todd Graham has also hired Guz Malzahn and Chad Morris as his OCs at Tulsa before anyone knew about them.  He currently has a guy named Mike Norvell who will be the next in line as "great OCs and future HC candidates".

But Graham is a meanie pants with a southern drawl.  We are above such a candidate. (points snooty noise in the air)  Give me Sumlin all day - damn his lack of caring about defense ...he talks cool and has a very sweet and cuddly personality.  Forget player development and just winning whatver the circumstances - leave that to other teams coaches.

I like Kevin Sumlin. It would've been a progressive hire in 2011, but I'm not sure for now. He's an energetic dude that will recruit well and he will put guys in the pros. I do agree with most that defense is a question, but I expect whoever the new AD is will vet and make sure that we get a HC who will take care of the whole program, not just the offense and getting players into the pros. I would be happy with Sumlin and a great DC. However, his current DC makes like 500k and we've seen how aTm has done this year...

There are definitely questions, but I wouldn't come close to ruling him out.

He inherited/developed a once in a lifetime QB.  I know Johnny Football became Johnny Hypeball and it caused a lot of negative backlash, but he was a great college player.   Sorry, but TAMU would beat Michigan by four touchdowns if they played right now.

If anything, a "bad" year might make his seat at TAMU a bit warm and make a move to someplace like Michigan look attractive.  They are still 5-3 and their losses are to the current #1, #3 and #4 teams according to the AP poll.

Their next four are against University of Louisiana-Monroe, Auburn, Missouri and LSU.  At the very least, they should find a way to go 7-5. and 8-4 wouldn't surprise me.  I am also guessing that, because of SEC depth, TAMU will win their bowl game, making them 8-5 or 9-4.

That being said, I don't think he will be on the "short list."

Sumlin's success at Houston and Texas A&M has/was largely predicated on having two outstanding quarterbacks (Case Keenum at Houston, that Manziel guy at TAMU) who ripped secondaries to shreds. Guess what? DIdn't recruit either guy. They fell into his lap.

He took over an absolutely loaded Texas A&M team that had received incredibly bad coaching. Not to minimize that because that is an accomplishment, but people made the TAMU turn around out to be a more herculean task than it was. And the SEC move allowed TAMU to be exotic while running an offense that is old hat by Big 12 standards.

It's year 3 for him and his team is an utter disaster. Not just on defense, where that's just expected of him, but on offense too. If TAMU's out of conference schedule wasn't such cheesecake, they'd be lucky to make a bowl this year.

At the end of the day, is he better than Hoke? Sure who isn't. But is he someone I would actually want? No, TAMU can keep him and his 5m salary.

I've said this before but if/when Hoke goes, Michigan's program will be at a very low place. They need to hire somebody that has a proven winning track record as a HC and can carry enough swagger in to jump start the program and win immediately. I don't think they will take any chances with coodinators or individuals who have had flash in the pan careers.

I get the feeling that almost every candidate mentioned on mgoblog is a reach and/or unproven and them being brought up is somewhat based on the UM fanbase's frustration with not winning and desire to hire anybody who has a winning record or has recently won a big game.

Also, while the department has lots of money, the idea of being able to pull some of these top coaches seems to ignore the RR handling and the reality of the current state of UM football.

because they never run the ball and have so many big plays that the other team gets a lot of possessions in good field position on a lot of drives. His defenses are never really good but not as bad as the numbers, just like his offenses are worse than they seem as well because of how many possessions they also get

People forget he's starting a first year QB who has the hardest time throwing a ball beyond 5 yards. Kenny Hill has been terrible this year with his accuracy. He's looked worse than Morris did during his initial playing time. He's a about to give Kyle Allen, the backup, a chance to play as a freshman. Allen has a cannon of an arm. This season is lost, but next year they'll be more experienced and even more loaded.
