This is great news if they fire him THIS week. Nobody else will be able to talk to him except us since they all currently have coaches.  If they wait until next week, I don't see how this helps us unless he has already agreed to come here.

So the coach we really really want, and secretly always wanted from day 1 of Lloyd's retirement; the guy who likely soon, will be the highest paid (or certainly in the top 5) football coach in the universe, who is widely respected as a proven winner, with one of the best records in the toughest league over the past 3 years...essentially just got fired...and we're all pumped about it.

...And I mean FULLY aware. You honestly think anyone who reads this blog, particularly one that's been around as long as I have doesn't know what the hell is going on here? I was just saying it's a pretty f-ing weird situation that one of the hottest football coaches in the world is getting fired, and teams are already offering him outrageous amounts of cash before it's even happened; in other words, how f**cked up must the situation be in that front office? Thanks for just assuming I'm an ignorant idiot though.

The owners and gm are morons for firing him. The guy has taken them to 3 straight championship games and one Super Bowl. That is like the steelers firing mike Tomlin because he went 8-8 for the past 2 years before being 10-5 again this year. Add in the fact that the 49ers are with the cardinals and Seahawks and one out of 4 years at around .500 isn't that big of a deal. I don't know who they think they can get that is a better hire.

Well seeing that he's a great coach and has more than proven himself at every stop-- yet by all accounts management dislikes him personally so much (as their employee) that they are almost gauranteed to make sure he doesn't coach there next season one way or another-- I'd guess they might fire him for the pure punitive and petty satisfaction of it. It happens.

if they fire him, won't they also owe him a buyout? Like how we stil are on the hook for firing Hoke?

Seems like if they are going to fire him, without even bothering to explore compensation from another NFL team (which doesn't have to be picks, could be conditional picks or a pile of cash), it seems like a good thing for Michigan... or neutral at worst.

If true, maybe word has been passed, because, otherwise, why wouldn't SF simply wait and see what other teams would offer? Even if its simply money?

You commented before I could edit and remove the spaces between lines...and make the same joke.

May as well remove Durkin and insert Mattison and REALLY get the band back together. Can we find a way to get Hoke in as the DTs coach?

In all honesty...I'd LOVE to have Wheatley, Campbell and Moeller. Just because they fit that old (pre-Hackett abliteration) definition of "Michigan Man" and that pisses some people off shouldn't disqualify them.

I could see him getting the offensive coordinator or "run game coordinator" title instead of Moeller too.

Nothing really says either is coming...but I wouldn't be shocked if it was either.

Soup Campbell is just my personal pipe dream, just makes too much sense.

I just mentioned Koger because he is/was a GA

The defensive guys are obvious and Mike Mallory would be another pipe dream. Although, Harbaugh has shown that he likes a seperate special teams coordinator and getting Mallory would be a nice fit.

No disrespect to Mallory or Mattison, but regardless of whether we get Harbaugh or not, I doubt anyone from the old staff will be retained.

I would not be upset with DJ Durkin, though. We'd need as many southern recruiting ties as we could get, and hopefully Harbaugh would have a lot of pull on the West Coast to snag a few CA prospects.

Ugh I have to remind myself that this is all contingent on Harbaugh actually coming here.

I'm pretty sure the 49ers can part ways with him and build in restrictions into any sort of agreement they sign when this occurs. Part of this agreement will likely involve foregoing the buyout as well as him being able to coach in the NFL (or at least the NFC) for X number of years.

The 49ers owe Harbaugh for next year unless he's traded (which he can veto) or he violates a contractual term. There is usually no way around this for employment contracts (it's why Hoke and Brandon get their full salaries).

The 49ers either will have Harbaugh as a coach next year or not, but either way, they are paying for him.

Using Hoke and Brandon is not the best example - why would they agree to anything but their full buyout? At that point M had no leverage and they had nothing to lose. On the other hand, Harbaugh can avoid all the trade stuff and negotiated buyout by agreeing (and vice versa for the 49ers).

I understand some of you are worried but think about this (if I am understanding the whole contract thing): If they're firing him, SOMEONE is bankrolling the contract buyout. That SOMEONE can't be a NFL team since it's before the end of the season, right? So therefore, that means it has to be a non NFL source, i.e. a college team. Regardless if that's right or not, I feel this is a strong signal that UM has offered to buyout his contract and will be handing over the check.

My friend is on his way to over to meet up with the team.   I'll post a full report ... he's calling me on his way home!

Since i have no reputation with this login .... read me old posts for his accuracy.

I feel like a kid and Santa is going to tell me my gifts in a couple hours!!!!

I am not sure how this is good news for UM, it now means he has unconditional release from the 49ers. Which means any other team can now make runs at him. Had they not fired him and forced his hand Harbaugh's only out was going to UM, aside from being traded. Right now the Brinks trucks in Oakland, NY, Atlanta and possibly some other locales are being loaded to the edge of carrying capacity and being sent to Harbaughs west coast address.

No just a football fan looking logically at the situation.  Harbaugh could have left for UM any time he wanted to, unless it was actually written in the contract.  As far as I know the NFL has standard competition clauses meaning no other NFL teams.

All this does is allows other teams earlier access.

What about the buyout? The 49ers would willingly give up Harbaugh and pay his last year of the contract just so he can land at another NFL gig? Makes no sense. Unless Harbaugh voluntarily gave up that buyout. Which also makes no sense. "Hey guys, if you want to fire me, just go ahead I won't need those millions of dollars I'm contractually guaranteed anymore".

OK, here's the latest.  BTW, when i said Team ... I meant Hackett's team.   Hackett has a few folks in the AD's office working through the holidays (including Sat and Sunday), collecting info. and ready to respond with anything that comes up.

1)   They do NOT have word yet from Harbaugh's agent if he will come home.   They still are expecting word today on serious interest level (see my post from last week for more info.).   Again, if Harbaugh wants to entertain serious NFL offers before the Michigan decision then Hackett will look at plan Bs and start initial DIRECT discussions.

2)  NO DIRECT discussions have occured with any plan Bs.   Hackett has been clear that NO direct discussions will occur until Harbaugh's decides on if he's going to consider NFL offers.

3)  The ceiling for Harbaugh is $53MM ... 48 and 5 (for the buyout) ... Hackett has the authority to move the 53 around any way he would like ... including bonuses for championships, etc.   Harbaugh's agent discussed more performance based $ vs. salary because it will provide a more pallatable (sp?) story.   The example given to me ... $6MM per year, $1MM for acedemic results, up to $1MM for on the field results .... and possibly 3 year rolling logevity bonusses ... Dumbtonio / Izzo model.

4)  They believe that Harbaugh's agent has an understanding with the 49ers on the buyout.   The agent is saying that this will help speed up the process after his last game.  "Ready to Roll" as soon as the clock hits zero (referring to the last game).

5)  Hackett is running the show ... pure executive doing his thing.

6)  Tension is fairly high in the room ... it's a noticable change from last week to this week.   Waiting on word today .... is a big deal.

7)  I asked him at the end of the discussion, "What do you think?"   His response ... "He comes home."
