Let's Go blue! The Actual Blue.
alternate headline: man does job
Let's Go blue! The Actual Blue.
I'd rather have uk. They could get rattled. And the big man may be out.
Injury? I was watching the other game a lot more than the Lousiville-KY game and missed something.
I hope you are right, I hope they get rattled but they just came from behind in the game and with a few minutes left to win
I think they could have made some free throws down the stretch.
They have another bigger man to fill in though... I think we drew the 3 teams with the best post presences in the tournament, and I don't like it. Morgan has shown he can more than hang. A good 7 footer does scare me though.
Glad they won. Let's see if their freshmen can successfully celebrate a huge rivalry win in the tournament and then come out ready to play great basketball in less than 48 hours. Let's see if Calipari can prepare for Beilein in time. My guesses: no and no
In the interview with Calipari after the game, he seemed like a spectator like the rest of us. He had no idea what was going on. His players just did whatever they did and he watched them do it.
I've seen enough of Calipari to know that the man knows how to coach
Coach? Or recruit?
He has taken three different schools to the Final Four, one of them being UMass. He's definitely shady but I think he is pretty solid as a coach.
I've read enough to know that you don't know what you are talking about.
I agree. Cal is a great coach. in my very expert opinion we win if we murder the threes. if not, blrbfbfbdbwhshhbdvd
WIN THE GAME
I like this UK matchup, they only have a day to prepare for us.
Thankfully we have a week to prepare for them.
Yeah, my point was that I have more faith in Beilein to prepare for them than Calipari to prepare for us.
of Les Miles. He gets his players amped and ready to ball. A strategist, he is not (in game). Obviously he knows how to recruit to win.
2 days for Beilein is like a week in ordinary coach-years.
Big blue is going down.
He means this
Michigan doesn't refer to itself as "Big Blue"
since whe-- oh. Since forever?
I think any of the teams left will pose a difficult challenge. We need to just stay focused an play smart ball.
but we will have more teeth
The game will have a huge impact on future recruiting - It should be a dandy - The matchup could be scintillating
Will it? We don't pay salaries like they do down there. :P
No. improve yes.
They are scary. They truly have size.
He's their only shot blocker.
Annnnnd they just won their Super Bowl...A young team isn't going to be able to respond.
These freshman are about to have no clue how to guard Beilein's O on 1 day prep
Kind of funny that we have the opportunity to advance to the Final Four by only beating the #7, 8, 11, and 15 seeds in our bracket.
I'll take it for sure, but I'd be whining like crazy if it was MSU or OSU that had that schedule
Like Ohio State did last year? And then they blew it.
Anyway, Kentucky looks to me to be very similar to Tennessee, but with a worse coach, less experience, and higher top end potential. Especially without Cauley-Stein who would really bother our guys trying to get to the rim and would probably make us even more a jump shooting team.
UK has a worse coach than Tennessee? I wouldn't exactly say that. Cuonzo Martin was nearly fired at midseason, while Calipari has multiple Final Fours and a NC ring to his record. He also just beat Rick Pitino and Gregg Marshall.
The seeding this year was just weird all around. They keep trying to say there's parity across the board but it's just not true. The big dogs eat.
But Tennessee was much better than the average 11-seed, and Kentucky has 1-seed talent. Definitely a much harder path than the seeds would indicate
the tourney shakes out such that a 2 seed makes the final four by playing a 7, 8, 11, and 15...that means that the 7 and 11 seeds are legit teams.
But M will be an underdog to an 11 and 8 seed.
Their size and athleticism is scary. I actually preferred Louisville. Go Blue!!
Hoping for a competent ref crew to show up
Then NOT the ones who called the UK/UL game. They let UK get away with everything. UL got jobbed by the zebras big time.
They also gave Louisville an extra possession at the end with their inability to properly view a replay. I just don't get how you can get a call wrong after looking at a slow mo zoomed in replay. I mean honestly. How the fuck does that happen twice in one night by two separate crews?
The one in their game seemed much more debatable. I think it was off Van Treese too, but it was not nearly as indisputable as the one in our game.
True. I just saw the one from our game on this postgame and it is just mindboggling how they saw anything but Maymon's hand touching that last. They should make the refs submit a public report saying what they see on replays. Maybe that would make them see a little better.
Also a bunch of reporters keep asking why that charge was called "in that situation." What the fuck? If it's a foul it's a foul. It's absurd how much they try to change the rules in the final minute.
a make up call for Maimon's 4th foul, where he didn't touch our guy, but got whistled for it iMHO.
Thats the first I thought.... But then I thought to myself "how would they know they need to be a makeup call as they called it wrong the first place". i e who told them?
Doesn't matter at what time of the game it was, that is a charge that had to be called. Don't know why some people think the rules should go completely out the window late in the game.
Watch Trey Burke's "the shot" against Kansas and imagine they call a foul when McGary hits the floor.
when you miss 10 free throw attempts, and made five fewer than UK (which was the difference) they didn't capitalize even when the refs did make calls go their way. 13/23 FT shooting is inexcusable for any team in a tournament.
Sunday. Just announced on TBS
(edit: I'm going, too---just have to find a ticket and make the 2 1/2 hour drive.)
Crowd will be be heavily UK. They have a lot more fans than Louisville. Half the state of Kentucky will be there. With their eighteen wives-sisters.
and all their snake handling churchgoers
They're called sister wives, and that's Utah. In Kentucky, they marry their cousins. Jeesh. Get it right.
California, New York, and Connecticut to name a few. . . Oddly enough it's illegal in Michigan and Kentucky. Go figure. .
Oddly enough, you don't have to be married to your cousin to pump her...
Beat the Wildcat! We need to take over Lucas Oil!
Pumped for this matchup! Calipari is a stiff and my guess is Beilein will know what Cal is doing even before he knows. Let's kick their ass on the way to the Final Four
I hope a lot of people are telling Jordan Morgan he can't match up with Kentucky bigs.
Ohio was giftwrapped the elite 8 last year.
I don't know why people here flatly assert that Cal is a bad coach. He's not. He's just a sleaze. Big difference.
I'm of the opinion that calipari isnt a bad coach. It's just he recruits players that aren't super coach able in that one and done mold. In his past though his teams have been well put together and he has out together impressive wins over Wichita state and Louisville.
If you can't coach the players that YOU recruited, you're a bad coach.
He has had a fair amount of success at Kentucky with the exception of last year. Don't get me wrong...he is a total sleaze, Cheater but I don't buy everyone asserting he isn't a good coach. Regular season doesn't matter now. We aren't playing that Kentucky team. We are playing the current one, one that is seemingly better. That being said I think we can totally win this.
With the players he has recruited he should have had a lot more success. I'll never for get him saying publicly of his Derrick Rose Memphis team that he didn't have them practice free throws because he didn't think they were important. They lost the final because they couldn't make free throws.
The absurdly talented team that was given the national title months before the season even started. They are finally starting to look a little like that team
Let me fix this for you:
If you get the top student-employees that you wanted in recruitment and can't coach them, then you're a bad coach.
might be the best #8 seed ever. Just terrible seeding
The sucked all year. They are finally hitting their stride. They went from preseason #1 which proved their potential to unranked towards the end of the year. They has terrible losses. Now they are doing big things but they didn't deserve anything better than a 7.
Tournament commitee tries to seed based on resume, not name. Kentucky's resume was not good in a bad conference, therefore they didn't deserve a better seed. You can't ask the tournament commitee to be fortune tellers, and make the assumption that Kentucky would come together in the tournament.
They were very young (still are) and played loose and typical like 18-19 year olds. It's like the old fab 5, I don't remember what we were seeded in 91-92 but it was something like a 6.
Look at their body of work throughout the entire season, not their talent level and potential.
I'll take the Cats minus Cauley-Stein.
Is he going to be out versus us?
What the fuck does Michigan have to do to earn some national respect? I flip on some postgame recaps and they're all picking Kentucky over Michigan.
Recruit five star bigs.
We have one.
Unfortunately just in warmups.
Not seriously threaten to blow double digit leads against the 15, 7, and then 11 seeded teams?
Honey badger don't care about respect. A honey badger just cares about winning. And yes, I think in this regard, Coach Beilein is a honey badger. To anyone that doubts, subs=crazy, and for all I care the man has a Phd in Math, so he is an expert in equations.
...we would be picked to lose (again) regardless of who won that game. And I love it. Keep telling this team they can't, especially #52, who will be told by everyone how future lottery pick Randle will have his way with JMo. Well, we'll just see about that.
Is a smaller team and they almost got by UK! We really need to have our perimeter shots falling!
Physically this is the matchup I did not want to see but if Cauley-Stein is slowed will obviously hurt UK. Randle is one of my fav players in college since he plays old school post and that's rare but I don't want to see him against us.
Will be curious how they react emotionally. They just played the basketball equivalent of OSU-UM and to come back 2 days later will be interesting. Don't know if freshman have memories like that but it could be a wildcard.
On the positive side we don't face a press; but I thought UL was a better matchup since it's 3 players - granted 3 very good players - you need to focus on and UL sucks at FT shooting.
Anyhow we need to play excellent in this game, not just good.
You guys are pretty happy about Kentucky. They have big guards that take it to the rack and score. That's our biggest weakness in my opinion. At least against Louisville our guards would have a big height advantage. Against UK we'll need a big edge in turnover margin, because they're going to get easy buckets and rebounds.
Louisville's press would have given us all sorts of trouble this year. If cauley stein can't play I think this matchup is better. Harrell on Louisville is just as fearsome as a big. Also, while Louisville was small, Russ smith and jones I think were lightning quick. I think they would have diced us up and really put jmo under a lot of pressure.
Defense on the perimeter trying to stop drives by UK. I think Morgan may be able to keep Randle from having a monster game, but drives from the guards is the scary prospect. Tennessee was getting alot of easy buckets that way in the second half, and they don't have as good of athletes as UK.
Still, this team has proved doubters wrong most of the season despite their weaknesses, so I am not sure what to think. Possibly we might see more of the 1-3-1 zone, though that would be a recipe to possibly get killed on the glass.
I think Michigan has a pretty clear recipe for winning games -- minimal turnovers and above-average 3pt shooting. We did one of those things very well tonight, and it was enough to barely get by. Against Kentucky, I think we will need to do both things atleast well, if not great. I'm hoping that they don't have a good "team defense" and Michigan gets good looks at open jumpers. I don't think they have faced anything close to Beilein's offense, in terms of the pressure it puts on teams to switch, hedge, and closeout on shooters.
Beat #1 seed Wichita State, beat rival and defending 2013 champs Louisville, and have at least 5 NBA players on their roster....bring on Kentucky! Let's kick some ass Sunday!
Brings back memories of Webber v Mashburn.
Okay everyone, this is a friendly reminder that we say Go Blue - not big blue - this is very important this weekend.
One of my best friends is a die-hard UK fan. This should be fun! HAIL!
Only Kenny Smith picked U-M, while Clark Kellogg deferred until tomorrow.
Clark is usually anti michigan so I considered his vote for kentucky
He wants to pick the Big Ten, but that would involve picking U-M, so he passed.
He picked Tennessee over us.
Did they say Randle would dominate inside? I enjoy pissed off Jordan Morgan.
Another weekend of sporting Michigan gear around Bal'more/DC/NoVa.
Time to claim SEC scalp #2
You sport yours in NoVa and I'll sport mine around RiVA. I'm sure there are some AA hippies running around NOLA to pick up my slack...
for those of you who share the religiosity gene with me, what of sporting the colors at church? I am not in Michigan, and have been perturbed at the sight of Spartys wearing the green at our place of worship several times in recent months. The temptation is great to stick my leg out to trip them in the aisle, but I have managed to resist. I am proud of my alma mater, but church does not seem like the place to flaunt maize and blue.
So 5 of 6 analysts picked Kentucky over Michigan except for Kenny smith. Let's prove these haters wrong!! Go blue baby! The M blue that is!
I don't mean to aim this at you specifically but why does picking someone else to win make them a hater? Kentucky has a boat load of talent and just beat the team that a lot of people picked to win it all. Kentucky is going to be the darling dark horse pick. I don't think it would matter who they were playing.
I guess hater was the wrong word to use, I just feel like mich doesn't get enough respect as opposed to other "quality" teams. Idk I just think it's annoying but we play better as an underdog, so oh well..
Based on what Calipari is saying, seems highly unlikely Cauley-Stein will be playing.
@umhoops: "It's not a good ankle injury. I'll just put it that way." - John Calipari on Willie Cauley-Stein.
That's a pretty profound medical diagnosis from Calipari.
Kentucky is a beast at the rim. On the perimiter, not so much.
We'll need to run a 0-5 zone.
If you can get your ass to Indy. We don't need Kentucky fans showing up in droves.
Those two fan-bases, along with IU fans all hate UK. Maybe U-M will get some anti-UK love.
They'll be gone I'm sure. More Kentucky fans are gonna roll here. Please come support Michigan in Indy we're gonna be in a tough environment.
Any idea where to find tickets?
ticket scalpers will be all over the streets. Easy to get tickets .... shouldn't be that expensive either. Scalping tickets is legal in Indiana.
I think Kentucky is the matchup that is better for us. They're a young team, that can't shoot jump shots or threes, or guard the perimeter all that well.
I have lived in Lexington for 15 years.......I am both excited about and loathing this game at the same time
Let's piss off Ashley Judd!
Limit turnovers and try to run as much as possible...then we can win the game even if we lose the rebounding/points in the paint. Simple as that.
Randle is an absolute monster. I was much less of a monster at 19 years old.
We win by atleast 10, not a doubt in my mind. I thoroughly expect a 2013 Elite 8 start for us on Sunday afternoon, and Calipari won't know what hit him. As far as matchups go I think Walton and Harisson is a push, with Levert and Stauskas having the advantage over Harrison and Young. Robinson and Randle will be a tough call, and I like Morgan vs Johnson. As far as bench goes, Spike/Irvin/Horford is better than Cauley-Stein and Poythress, and of course Beilein can coach circles around Calipari.
UK opened as a 2 pt favorite in Vegas. we're going to need Morgan to feel disrespected for at least 3 more games.
Well, the path is Randle -> Tarzewski or Kaminski -> probably Payne or Young. So that'll be happening.
Kentucky is 1-5 against RPI top 25 teams. I'm not worried.
How many of those are Florida? 3?
because they just beat two consecutive RPI Top 25 teams.
Tennessee was 1-5 against the RPI Top 50 and we managed to let them make it a game. Glad Kentucky doesn't have a lot of experience beating top teams, but that UK team seems to be gone now
We also played pretty terribly.
I mean, we shot well, but that's what we do. Turnovers were wildly out of character.
Opponent has size advantage inside and length to contain Michigan's wings. Opponent plays great D and will be able to slow down Michigan enough and will be able to score at will at the rim.
Keep giving us the same style and keep picking us to lose.
On another note, I have a colleague who went to UK and has been a lifelong fan. Right before the tourney I asked him if he thought they could decide it's now time to play (a la Fab Five 1992), flip a switch, take it up to another level, and make a run. He told me no way, they're way too stupid, and that their assist/TO ratio would doom them. Predicted they lucked out drawing Wichita, and if they got by the Shockers, Louisville would destroy them.
I'd personally give UK a healthy dose of the 1-3-1. TO prone true freshmen with 1 day to prepare? Sign me up.
and get Nik some early looks with lots of off the ball screens and maybe we can jump on them. Yes Louisville had them by the throat and we have seen a tendency to let off the gas, but I don't think we can play catch up with the Cats. Gotta get on them early. I think it will go down to the wire 85-80 good guys
Hot off the press, here are the matchup stats for our upcoming game (courtesy of TeamRankings):
|Avg Score Margin||+8.9||+9.2|
|Effective FG %||49.8%||55.8%|
|Off Rebound %||41.5%||26.6%|
|Opp Effective FG %||45.5%||49.1%|
Media saying we will lose because of Kentucky's size. LOL sound familiar? Same shit different game
I just glad that this game has a quick turnaround. Otherwise we'd have to hear that shitstorm of knob slobbing the media will be putting on Kentucky for a long time.
I like the matchup with Kentucky better than Louisville. Kentucky is loaded with talent but they do not play defense the way that Pitino teams do. We will have plenty of room to get our shot off and Michigan typically shoots better (if that is possible) the 2nd time they play at a venue.
I am not saying Kentucky can't win, but I like Michigan's chances. To me the difference will be if Michigan continues to be sloppy with the ball or do a better job of limiting their turnovers. Should be a great game.
This is our 5th time playing there in the last month though isn't it? (BIG Tourney)
BTT was in Bankers Life Fieldhouse -- home of the Pacers.
Fuck a wildcat
Horford we will some good minutes from you Sunday. Two and dones will prevail over the one and dones.
I have a feeling this will go similar to the Florida game last year. Kentucky will come out cocky. We punch them in their mouth, beat their ass, and watch Calipari's cheating ass cry
