Brian Cole Ejected/Suspended
Title says it all. Michigan 4 star recruit, Brian Cole, was suspended for the first quarter of last Friday's game for "disciplinary reasons." Cole then entered the game in the 2nd quarter, only to receive 2 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties before halftime. By rule, when a player obtains 2 such penalties, they are ejected for the remainder of the game, as well as the next game. Here is to hoping he matures a little before stepping onto campus. Hopefully before... Don't need an MSU situation on our hands.

In a quarter? How the hell do you pick up two unsportsmanlike conducts in a quarter, after you spent a quarter for a suspension?
It's strange, to say the least.

Could've been cursing
Could've spiked the ball
...this is one of those, I'll wait and see.

...the Big Ten title and the Rose Bowl too.
Isn't that the way the song goes?

We are talking high school officiating here. I have seen some pretty strange officiating at HS games. Sometimes refs seem to make it personal.
We really have no idea whether Cole went ballistic or if he is being targeted by a ref. I am hoping that whatever it is, he comes out of it wiser.

I'm not concerned about one instance of on-field, extra-curricular aggression.
Also, if Michigan doesn't have the most successful season, this little incident could turn to UM's favor.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still hoping for a very good season. All I mean is that rotten seasons have a tendency to make recruits get nervous. On the off chance Michigan has a bad showing this season, Cole may find he has fewer options as a result of on-field suspensions. Which may mean he comes to Michigan regardless.

If he were still alive.

- and potentially ignorant - as anyone that would assume a worst-case scenario. The poster below that advocated a little patience and some more information before getting excited one way or another has the right of it.
For me the more "discouraging" part is why he was suspended for the opening quarter. I have it on pretty good authority that it was due to him refusing to run the play (in this case a punt) that his coach told him to. Attempted a fake a instead. Not crazy about having kids refuse to respect and listen to the coach. Doesn't mean all hope is lost, or that Cole is a attitude issue moving forward, but it doesn't help.

I'm sure your skepticism is a credit to your intelligence...And what if, hypothetically, one's golf buddy is a relative of the coach. Would that add any weight?

I'll just put it this way, in this particular instance, it's virtually impossible to have a better source...And sLideshowbob isn't telling the truth! ;)

Dead on. Friends on the sideline during the game also told me that Cole ignored a punt call by his coach leading to his suspension. Also, Cole's jawing with the refs lead to his personal fouls, not sure if that was already established in this thread.

why would the refs give him an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for not running the play his coach wanted?
September 17th, 2014 at 10:32 AM ^
They didn't.

I got benched / suspended for a half for saying Shit after shanking a punt
Could be an issue or could be nothing

I got booted from a house league hockey game for swearing once. Apparently the ref's kid was in the stands and didn't like me apparently being a bad influence on him. Got a warning while swearing at someone from the bench, then got tripped and dropped an F bomb and got tossed. My then girlfriend, now wife happened to be there that night too, she was pretty embarrassed to be seen leaving with me.

Word I heard from my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend that knows this guy who knows this kid that is going out with this girl that heard Brian Cole call the ref a jive turkey.

I'd heard it was because he created a slight breach of etiquette by skipping the Triple Dare and going right for the throat.

If they were for celebrations, who cares.

On this topic, college football should have a "two personal fouls = automatic ejection" rule as well.
September 15th, 2014 at 11:00 PM ^
There's a key difference between Unsportsmanlike Conduct and Personal Foul. You can have a hand slip and get nabbed for two PF facemasks without any ill intent (now that the 5yd/15yd difference doesn't exist for facemasks), so it's not as concerning for PF, in my book. We're not talking about Cole picking up two PFs.
Now, two Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties constitutes an ejection in college football, as do a host of other US penalties (targeting and fighting, for instance) on only the first offense.

I don't think it's too likely that a guy's going to get two PF by accident in a game. One, maybe.

That is unfortunate. We could use a couple of kids with attitudes though, this team is too soft right now. Need some passionate players, like Peppers.

I'll say this: There are few things more aggravating than a high school football official who takes himself really, really seriously. That flag's gonna fly no matter what.
Even worse, surprisingly: High school track officials. The worst.

I spit on the ground once during a game, the ref thought I was doing it too close and in his direction (I had no idea he was there) and he threatened to kick me out of the game.
Refs can be really testy.
