Brady Hoke a "Michigan Man"? Where’s the baseball cap?
After taking a leave of absence from work in order to watch several Hoke-coached SDSU and Ball State football games repeatedly over a span of weeks, I came to the conclusion that Brady Hoke does not wear a baseball cap on the sidelines. Thus, there is a chance he will not wear a block M baseball cap on the sidelines this fall. This is a stark break from tradition from a coach who claims to value tradition.
I know we all want to see Hoke in the block M baseball cap; this is what we’ve expected from our coaches for generations.
And I realize we shouldn’t draw hasty conclusions from his previous teams, but what we’ve seen from this year’s Spring practices and game does not fill one with hope on this issue. I see Mattison and other assistants with the cap on. And I see Hoke in shorts pointing at things--while practicing with the defense(!!?)--perversely foregoing an M baseball cap.
If this is an indication of things to come, this fall will be the first time in over fifty years the Michigan football coach does not wear an M baseball cap on the sidelines.
Thankfully, this possibility does not seem to be scaring off recruits (yet).
Anyhow, I felt like this issue has been the “elephant in the room” since his hire in January (Brian, for example, has not even addressed the possibility of Hoke not wearing the cap, presumably just crossing his fingers and hoping for the best come fall). I wanted to address this now so that this site doesn’t have a meltdown in September when Hoke walks out of that tunnel w/out a baseball cap on.
If so, alas; but Go Blue regardless.
Hoke doesn't "get it."
Is this satire?
After seeing how an actual fuss was made about how captains were selected, I can't tell anymore.
This is a huge deal!!!
Hats interfere with the pointing.
...to blaze his own trail as evidenced by him eschewing M ballcap tradition. It's a dangerous move, but if he wins games, he might just really change the way things are done in the Michigan football program.
Didn't see the /s in your post so IDK what the hell you've been smoking. Look at the guy (Hoke). He probably has to have his hats custom made because his melon is so damn big. Not wearing a hat is probably the last worry on my mind for the program under his tenure.
Apparently you are looking at an 8 3/4 size lid. He should sell advertising space on it.
As long as Coach Hoke doesn't go with a Michigan version of this, I'm good.
I will buy one of these and wear it proudly if Brady Hoke wears it on the sidelines.
I mean, it's clearly a ridiculous hat for a grown man to wear unless he's on a boat or in the state of Florida. But I think it would be awesome if Hoke wore it for like an early-season, sunny, hot weather game, along with an M polo and some bermuda shorts. That would be classic. With adidias shoes.
To pull off that look.
Of course, he also may look like he's fighting in the 'Nam....
Boonie hats rule....
didn't wear a hat
IT'S CLEARLY A SIGN WE'RE NEXT!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
All aside, I would sort of like to see the baseball cap rockin' the sidelines. As said before, it really doesn't matter, but it'd be nice to see.
xoxo
Showcasing amazing technique in pointing while wearing a hat. Well done.
He's pointing in two directions. You can't send mixed signals to your players.
No hat is better than a visor. Truth.
Brian Kelly agrees with you.
slow day in the office?
cap starting in 1959
<--Bump Elliot
1959-2010=51 years with the same hat.
Before him they wore suits.
1891-1958=67 years with neckties.
<--Mike Murphy
Then before that we didn't have coaches.
looks like the same hat Clint Eastwood wore in "Joe Kidd".
Who was the last coach not to wear a baseball cap? Just by google images it appears Oosterban wore a cap but with no block M. I couldn't find any sideline pictures with Crisler but I'm guessing it was him.
Edit: late post
Lloyd Carr.
I wasn't kidding. Lloyd often went sans chapeau in the 90s, especially in warm weather. This is a stupid thread.
This is a stupid thread.NOW he tells me.
"sans chapeau" saved it.
I have it on good authoritah that Brady Hoke will be wearing a maize fedora during away games and a blue beret during home games.
Though, if you can't decide...
(There are no online pics of my Fedora with the Block M....sigh...)
He didn't wear any hats at Ball St. or SDSU because all he owns are Michigan hats. He will be sporting one this fall.
In this thread.

It better all be fake.
that I am happy. :)
You posted "Go Blue!" at the end of your post simply to get MGoPoints!
I wish I could boht neg and pos this. Neg for dragging out Michigan Man, pos for excellent satire.
You took a leave of absence from work to watch film of SD St and Ball St games?
We just came out of our worst three year run in history, with the most laughable defense in the country. we haven't won a BCS Bowl in almost a decade. And you'r worried about a hat?
Inside sources have indicated that Hoke will not be wearing a base ball cap, but rather, vicious dreads as a sign of team unity.
Brady Hoke should wear a Block M 59fifty. Backwards. With the stickers still on it. Like those guys in that frat on state street.
What is the "Glock M" you people keep talking about?
I hope by "frat," you mean BOX or some other congregation of geeds, because I don't know anyone in a fraternity who would be caught wearing a flat brimmed hat, let alone backwards, let alone in public.
definitely greek life bros trying to pull of backwards 59fiftys. With their greek letter emblazoned LAX pennies and boat shoes.
Seriously though, if you haven't seen a bunch of white dudes on campus wearing backwards 59fiftys i want to know where you hang out. North Campus doesn't count.
North Campus doesn't count.Watch out--the performing arts mafia might have to track you down and execute you unpleasantly for that remark.
