Best response to "Go Blue" from stranger?

Submitted by EGD on

A friend of mine who recently moved to the Bay Area raised an interesting question this week:

Fellow Michigan alums - Is there a standard response to being told "Go Blue!" by a stranger when they see you/your kid/your car in Michigan gear? I feel like there should be some sort of "'peace be with you'...'and also with you'" sort of call-and-answer, but I'm always caught off guard. And it's happening *a lot* since we moved to the Bay Area...

This seemed like the best place for her to get some good answers, so I agreed to post it for her.  Until she asked me, I would have said my usual response is to repeat "Go Blue" back to the person in a firmer tone and ever-so-slightly louder voice.  But from now on I'm going with alaikum salaam.

I would say a return GO BLUE that is louder, happier, & more enthusiastic than the original and accompanied with a big smile, a hail fist & an implied exclamation point would be appropriate for all occasions. So would a polite go blue to you too, or a smile and a thank you!

If the timing and vibe is right a hearty high five might be in order.

If you're a red blooded American man, boy, or lesbian and get go blued by a hot babe I'd say all attempts at an appreciative and very warm hug to go with your return go blue or thank you are within bounds & might even be your duty?

Also, on it happened day I was greeting people with happy Harbaugh day to enthusiastic response. In days following if I spoke to someone for the first time since the announcement I said happy Harbaugh. I'm not entirely sure if happy Harbaugh or happy Harbaugh day might not be appropriate on all days going forth until it's not, even where it seems a non-sequitur?

Right hand raised into a a black power fist, look the guy dead in the eye, set the mouth into a firm, serious, and determined pursing of the lips--and respond "Go Blue."

Then let it all dissolve into a smile.

Living in southwest Ohio, my best go blue moments was when Michigan finally beat Ohio. We went to target the next day and as I was getting my kids out the the car, I saw the guy parked across from us also wearing a Michigan shirt. We both said go blue at the same time. In the store there were about 20 more people with Michigan gear. By the time we were leaving I was high-fiving anyone wearing Michigan
Looking forward to doing that again soon.

When I was in college my response was "dude you don't have to say that, we all go to the same school." In my early 20s it was "fuck yeah!" In my late 20s it was "tits and ass" with a sly smile. As I found inner peace I would grasp their hand between both of mine, look them in the eye and say "yes, go blue indeed." As my inner peace faded into barely concealed rage my response became "fire Brandon." Now it is "harbaugh." Or if it is yelled at me from a ski lift as I go by its "haaarrrrrrbbaaauuuugggh!"

I usually just say go blue. I think OSU and MSU have it a little better since there's is a 2 part response, but oh well. Wait what am I saying? Nobody has it better than us.

"<BR><BR>" = "ENTER"

It's the "break" between paragraphs

For some reason it shos up in the headers but not in the body.  Someone else can answer this more thoroughly

On a somewhat related note, about 8 years ago when I was working at Cedar Point I started yelling back "H-O!" whenever I heard an "o-h" and a few of my friends have started doing the same thing. I can tell you in the somewhat limited sample size I've seen that they HATE it.

I hope it catches on. ;)
