FILM
I was able to confirm with Johnny that Coach Nussmeier reached out to him tonight and offered him. Johnny doesn't have any sort of order to his group of seven offers at this point and really hasn't started looking into schools much yet. Frasier has only been playing football since his freshman year so he's pretty green when it comes to the recruiting scene and what it takes to come up with a list of favorites.
After talking with Coach Nuss and coming away with an offer Johnny said the Wolverine offer means a lot and he really likes that Michigan is going to stick to the run game. He said that he and Coach Nuss didn't talk about scheme much but he's excited to in the future.
---------------------------------
Most people are going to wonder if this has any correlation to what Damien Harris is feeling, especially since it was Coach Nuss who visited Harris last week on one of his first gigs as the new OC at Michigan. Harris has kept relatively quiet throughout his recruitment and even more so since his visit with Coach Nuss.
I'm not sure the offer to Frasier is related but it's definitely worth noting.

Do we know if Coach Nuss is going to be given a specific region to recruit?
January 20th, 2014 at 7:27 PM ^
I've been trying to figure that out, NC is generally reserved for Coach Manning so I'm trying to piece that together still.

understand the step-down in offer. Although the Harris situation bears watching - is a 3-Star really your fall-back plan? Or do you see him potentially at another position (e.g. slot)? He's pretty small (granted 2015) so seems like an odd fit for our downhill rushing attack.
Thoughts?

There's a good chance that Michigan will take two running backs in 2015.

After I posted, I then began to wonder how this related to the recent push away from a 2014 RB - as in maybe we skip 2014 and double-down on 2015. Appreciate the insight.

While recruiting rankings do show some correlation with success, getting hung-up on stars is a mistake. If you find a player that fits your system and you believe can excel, you offer him. 'Nuss clearly thinks this young man fits what we want to do, and I trust that.
Wilton Speight is a 3-star that was recruited by Michigan and Alabama, among others. Kyle Kearns is a 3-star that I believe will be a star. MSU just went 13-1 and won the Rose Bowl with a roster full of 3-stars.
Stars do mean something, but they certainly don't mean everything.
Looking at his film, there's a jet sweep in there that is reminiscent of Mike Hart, another 3-star that turned out pretty well.
Offers from Penn State and Georgia indicate that there are some really good coaches that believe Frasier is better than his rankings suggest.

Please my ignorance (and the OT nature of my question), but at what age does a typical D1 recruit begin playing football?
January 20th, 2014 at 7:37 PM ^
Most people play football as young as they can. Pee Wee leagues and whatever else they are called. I think some leagues start as young as like 4 or 5 years old. My first year was 4th grade. He never played football until he was a freshman in high school.
January 20th, 2014 at 7:38 PM ^
I don't know what is considered typical, but we have guys right now who played some sort of pee wee football.
I think Funchess, Ross, Jenkins-Stone and Richardson all played for the Westside Cubs.
January 20th, 2014 at 7:42 PM ^
According to this link, he played some pee wee in the past.

Frasier’s first experience in football wasn’t one that stuck, playing one year in a Pee Wee league. “I just couldn’t get myself into it,” he recalled. But just before starting high school, he realized if he had something to do in the fall months (when track and field activity is limited) he’d be less tempted to develop bad habits. Frasier is also a standout sprinter, finishing second in the state in the 100-meter dash last spring (10.74 seconds). “I had some friends wanting me to play, but I basically decided to try football again to keep myself out of trouble,” Frasier said. “And it was the best decision of my life.”

How much time does a DC/OC spend recruiting? Do they have separate territories, or are they the big closers to seal the deal?
Hello Damien? I'm Nuss. Mitch and Murray sent me from downtown...
January 20th, 2014 at 8:34 PM ^
Coffee is for closers.

Where did you get 5'9 for his height? His Hudl video lists him at 6'0, with Rivals and 247 putting him at 5'11. It seems like 5'9 would be small in a pro style run heavy offense. I'm hoping he's 5'11 or 6'0.
January 20th, 2014 at 7:45 PM ^
I got 5'9" from Johnny himself.
January 21st, 2014 at 12:08 AM ^
fast and loose with those numbers. Just a quick google has his height from your 5'9" to 6'1". 5'11" is the most popular number being used.
January 20th, 2014 at 8:20 PM ^
Barry Sander, Emmitt Smith, LT, Javid Best, Mike Hart, Frank Gore, MDJ, Walter Payton, Jerome Bettis, Monte Ball, Shuan Alexander, Marshal Faulk, Chris Johnson, Earl Cambell, LeSean McCoy, Ricky Wiliams, Jamual Charles, Brian Westbrook, Tony Dorsett etc...
All 5'7 to 5'11 I don't think height matters much for the RB position.
January 20th, 2014 at 8:26 PM ^
Why is a 5'9" RB a problem? I would think, if anything, height probably has a negative correlation with durability.

Then people will just panic and say, "why you no recruit Mike Weber?"

Why does this feel like bad news for Damien Harris? #NoBlue?

There will still be a good shot to get Harris back, but this season will matter
One of the biggest competitors could possibly be Kentucky

I saw online that harris reaffirmed his commitment to Michigan. We'll only have 4-5 RBs on the roster if Harris stays with Hayes and Norfleet moving to the slot.

Unless something has developed in the last few hours, whatever you saw is probably old news from several weeks ago. If Harris had reaffirmed things very recently Sam Webb would have mentioned that front and center this morning during his round up.
FWIW, there is nothing new over at Scout or Rivals about Harris.
January 20th, 2014 at 8:22 PM ^
Of course it would be great news.

There's a Princeton in North Carolina?
January 20th, 2014 at 8:28 PM ^
I don't understand why this would affect Harris. Kid is a 5* stud, and I'm sure he understands that there's no way a college program like Michigan would only take one RB in two years. He may be wavering because he loved Borges and wants to see what his options are, but offering another RB shouldn't be an issue.
January 20th, 2014 at 8:41 PM ^
started at least a few days (maybe a week or more) before the Borges news when he removed all of the Michigan references from his twitter. Hopefully, he will stick with us, but sadly, the writing may be on the wall.
January 20th, 2014 at 9:09 PM ^
I don't have any inside info or anything, but his twitter feed still contains RTs of Peppers and a comment about Dennis Norfleet more recently than the Borges news. We'll see I guess.
January 20th, 2014 at 8:57 PM ^
People aren't concerned about this offer affecting Harris's commitment. We are worried that this offer is a result of Harris's likely decommitment.
January 20th, 2014 at 8:35 PM ^
the vibe from Webber and Patrick with new hire Nussmeier and if still possibilty addition if their isnt any RB's taken in this class.

about Michigan football recruiting.
January 20th, 2014 at 9:20 PM ^
I meant to say what is the reaction of the hire of Nussmeier from Mike Webber and Jacques Patrick perspective and are they still in the conversation in joining the class with Harris or as a backup plan if Harris decommits.

we've returned to a place where recruiting is going to depend a great deal on wins and losses. Continue losing to Sparty, Ohio and others on the field and we will see recruiting continue to slide.

Harris's situation is probably impacted by Borges, though there were rumors he might decommit when Campbell left. Either way, recruiting is only going to get tougher until we start winning.

of any recruiting woes! Ness will get up 10 wins next season and the recruits will be knocking down the doors!
