Barry Alvarez receives a Pay-Raise for Rose Bowl

By now everyone knows that Barry Alvarez is taking the reins for Bielma for the Rose Bowl, however this story came out yesterday.

Barry's back, and he's not working for free.....
Alvarez will receive $195,000 in December, which is 90 percent of Bielema's monthly coaching salary. He will also get $8,500, which is 10 percent of his athletic director salary. The total pay of $203,500 is a one-time $118,500 increase in his monthly salary.

Nevermind the fact that he's the 6th highest paid AD in the country, and earns about 1 million a year, I guess he needed more to coach this one game.

I don't see the big deal here. He's doing two jobs right? So wouldn't you expect to get paid accordingly?

It's a bit dubious to appoint

It's a bit dubious to appoint yourself to a job that comes with a substantial cash bonus. In other words, it's a big deal if you suspect the decision is not in the interests of Wisconsin football but rather of Barry's bank account.

I don't really have a problem with it (not that I care at all), but it's conceivable that some would.

Sometimes if you wanna get something done

you gotta do it yourself.

I doubt there are many who think anyone better can coach Wisconsin in the rose bowl on such short notice. Man does two jobs, man gets paid for two jobs

I think that's a good point.

I think that's a good point.  It would be easy to say "Oh look, he hired himself!" except for the fact that Badger fans absolutely love the hire.  In this case, I'd have to say he's actually picked the right guy for the job rather than he's exploiting his position to make bank.  I mean, maybe it's the same thing ... maybe it's not.  But I can guarantee Badger fans are more excited about the Rose Bowl now than they were with Bielema at the helm.

No issue with this.

I do not see the problem here. He will be working two jobs until the bowl game (for those keeping track: 1] Wisco AD 2] Wisco HC). Why should his pay not be commensurate with his duties? Would any of you take on an entire 2nd job and do it for free?

Um...yeah.

Well, people do it all the time.  In fact, I'm doing it right now.

I recently started a new job, but my replacement for my old job hasn't been named yet.  In the interim, I'm doing both.  And believe me, I'm not getting two paychecks!

I don't think it is wrong or unfiar, but in a FOIA world, all this stuff will come to light, and it will never play well.

Also, I can think of lots of situations where someone has taken an interim role for $1 while a permanent replacement is found.  Certainly seems to be the classier/high road approach.

He's working at Job #2,

because he wasn't good enough at job #1 (keeping a successful head football coach at his school).

He's getting a raise because he f'd up.

You're kind of a sucker if you just sign on to do more work for nothing. I don't really see an issue with this. He has to get back into coach mode to prepare for Stanford and deal with whatever he needs to do as AD over this month span. He should be compensated accordingly.

This.  I'll never work for free unless it's charity.  I told my dad I was going to do an unpaid internship in college.  He called me a dumbass, said they'd make me their bitch for nothing and to find something real to do.  If I'm not getting paid, I'm not doing it.  Why should they benefit from my work?

This reminds me of that movie scene in Horrible Bosses where Jason Bateman's boss (Kevin Spacey) announces that he's promoting himself and only taking 50-60% of the pay raise "for the good of the company".

I don't think it's that big of a deal.

except for the fact that he wouldn't pay Beilema's assistants a few extra 100K per year, but will take a couple 100K for himself for 3 fucking weeks work.

You know, if I were a Wisconsin fan, I'd probably be more interested in seeing Alvarez conduct a coaching search than playing coach himself for a few weeks.  People are suggesting that he deserves the pay for doing two jobs, but I find it hard to believe he's actually doing two jobs' worth of work, considering what 99% of ADs in his situation would be doing.

Doo-dah

I'm surprised no one else has voiced the thought that it seems like he does get paid plenty (pays himself, even...), but a year ago, assistant coaches were fleeing... And they were after more money, no?  Seems bizarre to throw lots of money at the AD and too little money at the assistant coaches.

Then I remember how much Bielema was getting paid, and now I'm undecided what my opinion is, again.

Bielema cited low pay for the assistants as a factor in his departure.  It does seem a little odd then for Alvarez to pocket some extra cash right after that.

Remember how odd we all

Remember how odd we all thought it was that Lloyd Carr somehow made friends with Russell Crowe?  Well Lloyd wasn't the only B1G coach who was making the rounds in Cali back in the day.  And when you party with with these guys you need to bring it - Barry probably just needed the money to pay for his upcoming bar bill during the trip to socal.

I should have titled it

I should have titled it "unrelated hijack post" anyways I was watching tv while reading this thread. Indiana and Cleveland game was on and noticed Zeller sitting on the bench but at first glance I thought it was Stauskas. Figured I would post it rather starting a ridiculous thread about someone who looks like someone. 75% of the people on this board would have.

I remember a time when the best player on Wisconsin's

football team was DB Troy Vincent.....and that was about it.

Those were the early years under Barry Alvarez, and then they started to kick ass.

Hope the Badgers do as well in the Rose Bowl as they did vs. Nebraska.

Great move

So, Alvarez just got to stroke his ego and fill his wallet at the same time?  Great work if you can get it...

I've never understood the love for Barry Alvarez.  The guy was a mediocre Big Ten coach.

Wisconsn was a perennial

Wisconsn was a perennial loser with few fans when he arrived.  Now they're a perennial league contender and Camp Randall is sold out every week.  He is their Bo Schembechler.

These guys never miss an opportunity. One month of  quasi work nets an extra $200,000. There is no way he can do BOTH jobs, the demands are two great, so he'll end up half assing them both....

What a fuckin racket.

Not doing both

He's not doing both jobs. He's just taking his salary from the one that pays better.

I wish I got paid extra when I did two jobs at once.  My salary would be doubled every month.

He gets to walk by....

...a statue of himself every day when he gets out of his convertible in the parking lot. The extra $$$ for coaching the Rose Bowl could be a ruse to raise money for another statue. If there's one rule I live by, it is to have no bounds on the amount of statues erected in one's honor.

It seems to me

that the only nugget of truth to be revealed in this whole situation is that Barry's sculpter was wearing beer goggles.

I have incessantly ribbed my UW friends and neighbors (I live in Madison, work at UW) about this exact fact.   Barry's statue definitely seems "streamlined", at least compared to his heydays as head football coach.   Thanks for the evidence.

Seems fair to me

He's not double dipping - if the poster's info is correct, he's taking only 10% of his usual AD salary and 90% of the old coach's salary.  Rough math says this setup saves the University about $100,000 this month versus the old status quo.   Could he take less - sure.  But this seems fair.  Perhaps his estimation was he would be spending 90% of his time this month coaching, or being a figurehead, or whatever you want to call it, and 10% as AD.

Public employees in Wisconsin

Not taking sides in politics here, but with all of the attention on Lansing this week, and all of the attention in Madison last year, isn't the pay level of public employees kind of a tender issue right now? Does someone have asbestos underwear up there?

If Wisconsin's finances are like Michigan's, Alvarez is not truly a public employee (i.e., taxpayer funds do not pay his salary).

Another Tidbit...

The USA Today story doesn't add much, but it does mention this regarding the temporary raise:

"The money for the coaching job will come out of Bielema's $1 million buyout to be paid by Arkansas."

If that's correct, then he is being paid (mostly, anyway) with money owed to the school, not necessarily straight from the budget (save for the percentage of his salary perhaps, which would be in the budget), so it isn't necessarily hurting their progress on finding a replacement for Bielema or shorting someone or something vital to the program. That being said, I have to wonder if it might be a different arrangement - from a monetary standpoint - if they weren't expecting the buyout money from Arkansas.

Like others, I don't really have an issue with someone being compensated to do two jobs on a temporary basis, especially since it probably means his some horrific hours for the next few weeks more than likely.

I'm not questioning the legitimacy of the pay, but I simply can't imagine working for a month at something and earning enough money during that time to pay off my house in its entirety.  Blows my mind.

Who gets 90% of the AD money then

If he's only devoting 10% of his time to the AD job, then isn't there some assistant AD that deserves $100k or so for December.

Just realized I didn't check whether some else made the same comment.
