Toledo was 3-9 that year (2-6) in the MAC.  It was the absolute low point of any Michigan football that I can remember. It was also the first year I had season tickets for my wife & my 2 young boys.  We made it through 3 years of RR & 3 years of BH before I couldn't take it anymore.  Congrats to everyone else who did.  People sometimes forget just how bad it was before Harbaugh got here.

Toledo was way worse. App St was more surprising because back then most UM fans had no idea who App St was even though they were a solid FCS team. Toledo was like rock-bottom the worst, losing to a shitty MAC team with no end to the failures of the coaching staff/team in sight. App St was “oh shit, the team didn’t take this one game seriously.”

You and the other like-minded people in this thread should ask yourselves this question:

Which loss is remembered all these years later? Appalachian State or Toledo?

It's Appalachian State and it's not even close.

MAC teams beat Big Ten teams every so often. It's not newsworthy even when the MAC team is mediocre / lousy.

2008 was the worst year for Michigan football in the modern era. That Toledo game was just one of many catastrophes.

The 2007 team was considered a national championship contender and had several players picked in the NFL draft the following spring.

Appalachian State lost to Georgia Southern and Wofford that year.

Please.

App State is shitting away this game by playing the softest, most conservative defense, allowing three 4th down conversions, twice completely ignoring the RB out of the backfield.

EDIT: They got lucky as hell that the Carolina QB overthrew a wide open receiver in the end zone.

I watched the last five minutes of this one.  Major shocker that the commentators never once mentioned the horror.  I kept waiting for them to show a clip of it and then mention it several more times.  Pleasant surprise.

Speaking of SEC teams losing to non-Power 5 teams:

Arkansas got murdered by Western Kentucky 45-19 (it wasn't even really that close, it was 38-7 after 3 Quarters) earlier today.

Arkansas, in the last 2 years, is 0-14 in SEC play and has OOC losses to all of Colorado State, San Jose State, North Texas and WKU.  All of the last 3 at home.

Yikes, things have gone downhill at Arkansas.

One of my clients --- we have a standing weekly call, the 2 guys on the client end are Arkansas and SMU alums.

2 weeks ago, college football came up and the Arkansas guy goes off "yeah, nice game we had against Alabama last weekend, it was 42-0 after about 20 minutes.  And what the hell Patrick, who is this Coach you sent us?  Guess we should have known though, the guy had a well below .500 record at SMU.  But we hire him!  Should have just kept Big Bret."

App State has been one of the better G5 teams for a while now.  They already beat UNC this year and took PSU to overtime last year.  South Carolina was favored by 6, that's hardly a big upset.

This is a much more significant and memorable victory than the one where they beat Michigan. Surely this is the one that should forever be remembered. Now we can forget what happened at the start of the 2007 season.
