The dumbest part of this "saga" is the Gentry moved to TE looks likes it permanent in perpetuity. Whoever wins the QB job will be there for a minimum of 2 Years so Gentry getting on the field in another capacity can only benefit him. Also he'll learn the routes and other nuances of receiving that can help a QB get better. When there is another QB battle he could easily jump back into the foray.

Two things when taken seperately will get you clicks, fake outrage and Harbaugh. Put them together and youre sure to add to your twitter followers. Thats the name of the game these days in sports 'journalism'. People in Michigan actually know who this guy is now and care enough to wage internet battle.

Recruiting 2 top rated QBs is a head scratcher? That part really had me laughing. Also loved how he says Gentry could be the next Gronk but apparently thinks that's a bad thing? lol

just by clicking on this crap and posting about it on social media you've made this article this guy's greatest journalistic triumph. And he didn't really even have to do anything for it. By raging about this guy, you're making anti-Harbaugh tripe a profitable enterprise.

While it seems that the writer of this article is a freaking clown that's for sure, I kind of get the point he's making.  Zach and his dad are in a tough spot.  Why would they talk to the media and say how upset they are about not being the starting qb?  Would be super obvious that he's upset and that would basically set up a transfer right away.

I wonder if he really wanted to step away from playing QB at this point.  He seemed to have a really interesting skill set at that position and was hoping to hear good things about him in the future.  If he's all about the switch to TE this year after watching the numbers Harbaugh's TE's have then AWESOME!  I hope he's a beast and becomes Michigan's next Gonk because lets face it Butt is an animal out there.  But if he still thinks of himself as a qb and is told that he doesn't have a good shot at winning the job I wouldn't blame him if he wanted to transfer to somewhere else.

Once again I don't understand why we help these Drew Sharps out by linking to their articles and giving them the pageviews they're looking for.

Sorry, but you're the third person to post this same comment.  Who cares if we click on his link?  Do you think this New Mexico goofball is going to get so overloaded with web traffic off of one poorly thought out article that he's going to start hammering out daily anti-Michigan columns?

He writes for a New Mexico newspaper for crying out loud. He had one "what-if" thought cross his mind and threw it out to the local populace who may be curious about Gentry's status.  The only reason you know about it is because some other turd at the Freep retweeted it.

Click the link. Go read the article. Slander him anonymously over the internet. Join his legion of 450 Twitter followers if you feel like it.  Do whatever you want.  It doesn't matter.

You're never going to hear from him again...

(...because obviously he's going to retire early, buy a yacht and move to Barbados with the millions he made off the 100 mgobloggers that clicked his Gentry link.)

It's not so much this particular New Mexico writer as the general principle.

Web sites need lots of pageviews to survive economically - that's how they garner ad revenue.  Some go about this by delivering quality, original content.  Others go about it by posting obnoxious hot takes that get people riled up - basically, they troll readers.

I think we should support the former and not the latter.  When you link to writers like this, you perpetuate this kind of "journalism."  I'd rather see it die off.

Well, I clicked it three times, so looks like the Albuquerque Journal will have enough cash to keep the lights on one more day. My bad. Almost had them bankrupted. Next time, we'll do it right and end his career.

This is why the "you'll have a chance to start here, so you can make the NFL" recruiting pitch is dumb. If a kid is good enough to make the NFL, he'll supplant current starters, at ANY school. If Gentry is good enough to be a championship caliber D1 QB, then he'd be QB at M. If not, then it's only doing him a disservice to keep him there.

Alternatively, if Gentry is really that good, he can transfer and still find success.  Aaron Rodgers and Cam Newton both played in junior college.  Joe Flacco transferred to FCS.  Nick Foles played at MSU and Arizona.  Russell Wilson played at NC State and Wisconsin.  As much as it pains Uncle Rico, the best quarterbacks are not sitting on the coach because the coach didn't give them a chance.  They are starting in the NFL.

That is one of the most poorly-written pieces I've ever read. It's littered with syntactical errors, he calls us the "Wolves," and doesn't support his position at all.

Why is signing two more top QBs in successive classes a head-scratcher? Should we just go the Shane Morris route and take only one highly-ranked QB every two years so they don't get their precious feelings hurt? Because every top QB recruit pans out? Maybe, just maybe, this is in the best interests of Gentry and the team, and his family doesn't want to talk to some know-nothing, hack journalist.

Well at least the writer admits that he doesnt know anything about the situation and no one whom he has reached out to, is talking....

That said...look... if Gentry is not going to be a QB candidate, then Harbaugh knows it and the move is for a good reason.

Its doubtful that Harbaugh would move a kid to TE who had a future at QB.

Gentry could always transfer....

This is where, in my opinion:

** The NCAA needs to institute a hardship rule which allows Freshman or redshirt Freshman to transfer 1 time without penalty if they can state a case as to why.  Its that simple.  It could be due to a coaching change, injury, academics, homesick...whatever....but they get 1 shot to transfer with no penalty as long as it occurs before their 2nd season of eligibility.

That is how it should be...but this is the NCAA we are talking about.

Speaking of not recruiting two QB's, remember when Lloyd Carr told Drew Henson if he commited as a Junior, he would not recruit another QB after him?  How'd that go?

I'm a little late to this party...long day. The author's contrived attempt at folksiness makes me want to vomit. I'm sure JH said he would evaluate Gentry at QB but would do right by him. Until Gentry speaks against the switch or transfers, the assumption must be that of willing participant. This blowhard can go jump in a lake. Do they have any in NM?

Apparently this asshat doubled down on his douchery by tweeting the following:

Could it be that he really loves going to school at Michigan and has never considered leaving regardless of what position his world class coach suggestedto him might be best?

who is obviously bucking for a Freep job. I bet he put on his application that he has taken several teams to the Rose Bowl as a QB. He also probably told the Freep he has been the headcoach of several Superbowl teams. So of course when he criticizes Harbaugh people stand up and take notice. The man knows what he is talking about he doesn't give out ticky tacky criticism like some half baked reporter butt hurt over his favorite QB that came from his area in some time is coming up short as the QB at Michigan.

In all fairness though, I did expect Gentry to be a good QB that could bail the starter out of trouble just like Tom Brady did when he was here. But I don't think (judging by his criticism of Detroit and the surrounding area) that he understands that it's really hard to be the QB at Michigan. Or as the great Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter told Drew Henson, you were the QB at Michigan? man! thats a big deal. Paraphrasing of course but this guy out of New Mexico just doesn't get it. And as always GO BLUE!!!

When I first started reading this article, I was pulled into a 180 - actually liking this journalist. To preface my comment, the title of this thread made me want to hate the guy - before even reading a word of his story. He came across as an honest, open-minded, journalist. Until he said "I became the biggest Michigan fan" shortly before admitting he had literally did no research or anything in regards to Gentrys time on campus... so..... I stopped reading this garbage. Long story short. IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST!!!

is he has never seen a UM practice and knows nothing about what is happening in Ann Arbor. Look he has seen high school football in New Mexico, which is a long ways from B1G football and the competition Gentry is facing at UM.

I have heard Gentry is very athletic, especially for his size. But, I'm willing to bet he's pretty far down the depth chart for QB's and with the young guns Harbaugh is recruiting it's possible Gentry would get so far down the chart he would never see the field.  So why not play the kid where his size and athleticisim can make a difference and he can contribute to the team?

Instead of knocking Harbaugh, maybe this guy should praise him for being an innovative coach and will help this kid succed at the next level and maybe give him a spring board to the NFL.

Another nobody trying to get attention using the tired formula of writing something bad about Jim Harbaugh.  Rule of thumb...if the author is a no_name_nobody from nowhereville please don't start a topic about them thanks!

on reading this stuff.  I like to know what's being said about Michigan and Harbaugh, but it's probably better not to waste my free time on hit pieces which then induce me to post something in response, wasting even more time.  The writer was upset that he couldn't get his calls or texts or emails returned.  Maybe that induced his negativity.  It shouldn't.  Good journalists (and I knew quite a few in my career) realize that subjects they cover often are too busy to take the time to talk to the press.  This is expecially true when the writer is a local writer over 1500 miles away.

The New Mexico sportswriter obviously doesn't mention the relative academic merits of a choice between Michigan and Alabama (if Gentry had the option) or even Texas.  Gentry is not dumb.  Like Jabrill Peppers and Rashan Gary, he knows that your football career lasts only so long.  Yes, he obviously wants to be a star NFL QB like Brady or Harbaugh, but the reality is that the odds for anyone to attain that level of success not only depends on skill but a little luck.  [Brady's chance for stardom started with an injury to Bledsoe.]

If Gentry stays and gets his degree he will be well on his way to having a great career, whether in football or outside of football.  He will have a great network of alumni.

The sportswriter asserts "(i)t was a head-scratcher" when Harbaugh recruited Peters in 2015 and McCaffrey in 2016.  So, because Harbaugh recruited a top QB in 2014 he shouldn't recruit top QB's in subsequent years?  So he should just assume that his current complement of QB's, all unproven in the Big Ten, will not only perform at the highest level but stay healthy?  Give me a break.

I hope Gentry becomes an All American and star NFL tight end, or quarterback, or something else.  But if he doesn't, I know he made the right decision to get a Michigan degree.
