So...what did Bert expect leaving a great thing at Wiscy for Arkansas? Love to know what his expectations were.

His offenses controlled the clock but his D's were never anything to write home about.

Well...the other games are boring and after Saban seemed to Nuss for the 2 losses last season despite 500 yds plus of offense and more than enough points it is nice to see the great Kiffin and Saban struggle a little bit to start.

The sad thing is Bama could score 40 points in this game, still lose, and talking heads will still never say a bad word about the Saban D.  The Northwestern game crew just wondered what was wrong with Bama`s offense.  Never mind the D is on pace to give up 34 points.

I said Golson would give UM a lot of trouble in another thread about a week ago and got yelled at "did you see Golson in 2012! Rees was the truth!"  as if first year starters don't get better from 1 year to the next.  Or in his case 2 years. Said he reminded me of the issues the McNabb, Troy Smith types posed ... and he looks just like that kind of QB that has haunted UM for years.   He doesn't have to be the level of those QBs - any competent QB who has that scramble ability gives a team headaches - see Devin Gardner.

The defense is going to face a stern test and assignment football is going to be important.  He is exactly the type of QB who kills you on 3rd and 6 with a 13 yard scamper that keeps your defense on the field a long time.

I think this game vs ND has the chance to be a high scoring affair - something in the 30s for both teams.  Rice is not a great team but they are way better than a Jacksonville State or App state.

During the last 2-3 years scrambling QBs have not given UM much trouble -- with the exception of Miller.  Martinez was pretty good at Nebraska and did not do much against us. The guy at Illinois was a good scrambler and did not have much success against us.

Now, Golson may end up rushing for 200 yards against us, but I do not think recent history predicts a big day for him.

If you have been watching UM football since about 1991 running QBs and/ or "scrambling QBs" ala Troy Smith have given us hell.  We havent played a ton of them of any quality lately. Thankfully.  We beat Miller his freshman year on the worst OSU team in 20 years with a very bad coach.  I agree a running QB who is completely lost his first year we are fine with (Nebraska's QB last year was pretty lost).   Golson looked terrible against us as well.  But when they have a bit of experience they are a nightmare for us generally.  Even Indiana had 1 of their 2 QBs like this and gave us fits last year.  Just because we won doesnt mean our defense figured it out.  Scheelhouse was mediocre on a very bad team.

Looking at our schedule in 2013 we really avoided any of these type of QBs outside of 1 of the Indiana QBs, Nebraska, and OSU.  The Nebraska guy looked like Devin in a few spot moment 3 years ago - pretty lost. Usually these type of QBs their first year look like Golson his first year - running around throwing balls with a 50% completion rate. Indiana and OSU had a lot of success vs our defense.

If we shut down Golson next week I'll say maybe our defense has solved these type of QBs.  Generally we have been playing them lately in their first year or facing teams without them.

Unlike most I am all for our future conf opponents sucking.   Our reputation as a conference is already bad so who cares if these teams we play down the road stink.  Guess what ....OSU sucked in 2011 - we still won and it helped us go 11-2.   And I am all for Nebraska looking great since the only time we'd play them is in the Big 10 CG.    Same for Wiscy - we don't play them - hope they beat LSU.   And then I hope they suck in 2 years when they rotate back to our schedule.

All the teams we play - hope they look like tire fires.  No one was wishing we'd look competent for most of the past 7 years.  They were gladly taking the wins and a bad team for them to play.  So I wish the same on them.  Until bowl season when my view will change a bit since we are done with them.

All I'm going to say is if we have a 2006 like season and don't make the four team play-off because of the Big Ten reputation I'm going to be pissed. I'm not sure we're at that point and may not be until we head to East Lansing but still the Big Ten reputation is important IMO.
