2020 Depth Chart attempt

Submitted by reddogrjw on December 26th, 2019 at 2:43 PM

Can use some help on the backup OL spots, D-Line and linebacker spots as well

Only people assured of leaving have been removed.

Some players listed at more than one spot.

Currently 89 scholarship players per my count

Designate the likely walk-ons with * since some get 1-year scholarships sometimes

Only thing I'm not sure about is Hayes at LT over Stueber. And that's only because of how close Stueber was with Mayfield this year before getting hurt. I'd have to imagine he would get the nod, but it's a good problem to have.

If the best five play I could see Stueber at guard.  Also Barnhart was the only Frosh OL to see the field I believe.

I really hope Kemp comes back.  He was kind of an iron man in a tough spot. We need Mazi to step up and take half those snaps.  If Jeter is ahead of Mazi we are going to have some tough days.

Yeah, Barnhart was the only freshman OL to see action and he played RT. Hard to see him as a 4th string guard.

No way Jeter starts based on what happened this season. If Kemp doesn't return, I expect to see Hinton and Dwumfour start, even if neither is a NT. Kemp's not really a NT either.

It is impossible to speculate about Evans.  He has been out of the lineup for a year already and who knows if he will still have the coaches favor when he returns. (And was frankly not that impactful, as least thus far).  Our running back room is the most secure room on the team and both Jackson and Sanistril look to be every bit of Chris Evans as a slot-type substance.

He may play all the time.  He may not play at all.  No way to know on that.

I appreciate your work on this! A few things:

1. Michael Barrett will be a RS So, and likely the primary viper. Anthony Solomon has seen very few viper snaps.

2. I think it’s unlikely that McGregor, coming off a major injury, slides in front of Upshaw, who did reasonably well with his garbage time snaps.

3. I’d consider switching Hinton and Jeter. Jeter disappeared after the Wisconsin game, and had a disappointing season as far as production and utility go. Hinton, of whom I’m a big fan, did well with his limited snaps and played his way meaningfully into the rotation by season’s end.

4. I think Steuber is more likely to take the LT spot than Hayes.

I don’t see Nick returning but that would be huge if he did. I do think there’s a possibility for DPJ to come back. Healing with Bell would be nice pieces.

If you’re right there would be lots of players on offense with experience in the program. Maybe it translates this coming year. I do think if we get past Washington we could have a very good year heading into Columbus and then we’ll have to figure out how to not shoot ourselves in the foot.

OL - I believe latest reps had Honigford at T, Rumler at G and Stewart at C. It can certainly all change.

DL - I expect Hinton to start, Smith or Kemp or some move will push Jeter to 2nd or 3rd, Ojabo/Morris/ Welschof to spend time at 3 tech and doubt Jenkins sees the field as true frosh (needs S&C&N for 20+ lbs.

RB - I think everyone just likes talking about the shiny new toys but Chris Evans we be in the top 3 backs. I know it’s been awhile but getting him back is a major plus to already strong group. Other notes I’m pretty sure Tru Wilson is done, and I hope i’m wrong but Christian Turner may be a transfer portal candidate. Love his game, but the fumbles cost him his spot and now he’s got an uphill climb to get it back. Whoever the 3-4 guys are who get carries we should feel really good about next year.

WR - Kent is gone I believe, rumor is George Johnson to CB

TE - wouldn’t be surprise if we add one more but if we don’t i think you’re right about Hibner not getting a redshirt.

T - Hayes/Stueber

DT - Kemp should be back. Might as well just list Aaron Lewis over here because he’s coming eventually.

Viper - Barrett the starter

If Dylan is the real deal the offense should be really good. I’m excited to see some new faces on defense.

Pretty good overall.  I agree with others on Hinton over Jeter at NT .   I think Hayes is right at LT.  Wasn’t as ready to go but more LT-like than other tackles.

Don’t see a Seldon redshirt.  I think he’ll move up the depth chart and push for 3rd cb later in the year.

I’d bump Evans up.  No way to put a true far ahead of him, even a good one.  I’d go as far as 2b with Charbonnet behind Haskins

Others have already pointed out some of your typos on class standing so I'll skip those.

No inside info but if I had to bet I think Stuber plays G next year to get best 5 on the field. It was mentioned in fall camp he was first backup for basically every spot on the line except C.  Hayes got some PT throughout the year and probably isn't the best suited to play G with his frame.

I know a lot including Brian are penciling in Spanellis as a starter but I wouldn't be surprised if one of the younger guys pulled ahead of him at G.  I think his only starting spot is at C assuming Ruiz declares.

Mike is probably McGrone and ...Thomas as backup?  Probably at the start the season anyways.

Will is probably Ross and Gil as backup (again at the start of the season).

Assuming DT as a whole improves next year, which I think it will assuming Kemp comes back, we might not have as much SAM usage next year with Uche gone and no obvious direct replacement - at least one that will be ready to go next year.  If I had to guess we see more base 4-2-5 next year... again, assuming we have 4 functional DT's on the roster.  Speaking of NT I would put Jess Speight over Paea and Myers (Does Myers have more eligibility?) based on the playing (garbage) time last year.

That CB list does not give me warm fuzzies.  The 5 DB class of 2018 has not produced much.
