Basic Status of ND's football team (expected starters and such)
remember Threet throwing 3 picks during UM's first spring game with RR. I brought up the spring game b/c it's the only recent indicator of his abilities post ACL repair.
I'll be surprised if they lose to Western or Army, but every other game could go either way (USC is better on paper, but who knows what their mental state will be at the end of the season). The first 6 games are all against middling opponents. If Crist and the new linemen struggle, they might not win any of them. If they hit the ground running and their passing attack is 80% as effective as it was last year, they might be favored in all 6. I'm assuming that their running game and defense are adequate but nothing special.
If I had to guess, 6-6 or 7-5. If they go 6-6, they'll take the bowl bid this time.
I strongly Strongly STRONGLY STRONGLY dislike Notre Dame.

I take back some of the things I have thought about you.
Not all, but most...

"Is the personnel you inherited capable of running your offense?"
"No, not right now. But we are making progress toward that. It will take a while for us to be full throttle here. There are enough skill players for us to spread the field and keep pressure on defenses. It will take us some time to condition ourselves and mentally pick up to where we need to be. I see this as a process for us offensively. I don't see us hitting the ground and running. It is going to take a little while."
For a guy with a reputation for being a snake, that was pretty blunt, and eerily similar at that.
it's called CYA - cover your ass
Sounds a lot like what RR said in his first year, although ND has oodles more talent than we ever did in 2008. The one thing I am dreading, is God forbid, ND gets out to a great start and then everyone talks about how Kelly is doing at ND what Rich Rod couldn't do at Michigan -- tailor his system to the players he was given, bullshit, etc....
CoachSpeak for 400, Alex."
Kelly is taking a page out of Lou Holtz' playbook. Lou used to worry aloud every year that his team was going to suck, and they'd go out and win 10 games (how he became such a ridiculously delusional analyst when discussing the Irish is a mystery).
yeah there is some of that in there but Kelly has been very blunt with reporters in general. He doesn't dance around topics, he will either answer a question or he won't and when he does its very straight forward
The thing I find cool about this years UM/ND game is neither team will be able to run limited playbooks in their openers. For the most part. We wont be ad libbing against a MAC team and they wont run up the score on what ever high school team they played that week.
they play Purdue the week before us, not exactly a high school team, although their coach likes to act as if he is in high school...

Instead of saying something similar to "No it wasnt me, honest!" and having the coach and kid walk away still smug and not believing him, he should've said "you're welcome, but looks like you didn't learn anything from it."
Just take the comment as though you didn't catch the sarcasm and point out that, indeed, he obviously didn't learn anything from it.
Also, the coach should be suspended for that. You don't teach a kid in one of the most big-headed demographics (college and future pro athletes, at least in their minds) to be even more so by being passive aggressive and smug. We have excessive celebration penalties. I dunno about you, but that seems more excessive a display of sore loser syndrome than throwing a ball in the air and cheering with teammates.
ND has so much talent, i think 6-6 would be a big disappointment, with the major upgrade at head coach. their roster is a whose who of former star recruits.
I can easily see the UM/ND matchup this year being a classic.
Irish I appreciate the post and if possible could you please post the look on your face when Forcier completed the touchdown pass for the win in AA last year.
BK is a great coach, he has sum good talent at ND and his offense will be fine, he never had a great D, and ND last yr. wasnt to great on D either, so i can see ND going any were from 6-6 to 9-3... the ND/UM game this yr. could reach 100 total points.
Rivals has a more extensive breakdown and comparison to UM's first season in this free article, which I linked below. (no intent to upstage the OP)
I hadn't even seen it till you posted it, I don't really agree with everything they wrote but it is still and interesting article, thanks
why come ND, a school named after a FRENCH cathedral, has a nickname of IRISH?
It just don't make no sense.
and, fock ND.
The only thing I care about is a UM victory against ND. ND may have an advantage at LB and secondary. UM has a slight advantage on the DL. UM has a more experience OL but ND has the talent and depth at OL. QB, UM should have the advantage with Tate and DROB. RB may be a draw. The game will come down to turnovers and coaching. I'm hoping that ND turns the ball over a few more times and we win the game, UM 24, ND 20. After our victory in South Bend, I really don't care what happens to ND, win, lose or draw!!!! May be if ND would ever join the b10 I may care one day!
Don't count out Roby Toma, was considered a throw in with Te'o, but the little bastard forced his way into the rotation last year. In the Wes Welker mold.
thank you, you are exactly right

Irish: Not sure if you have heard of it, but http://www.irishenvy.com is a pretty good ND site.
