THE FUTURE OF SOME NCAA BUREAUCRAT IS GRIM

Never go in against a Harbaugh when death is on the line! Dan Wetzel has the nitty gritty details on what's going with what MSU honks are describing as SCANDAL ARMAGEDDON and the rest of the world is completely ignoring. Long story short, someone at the NCAA is suicidal enough to get into a staring contest with James Joseph Harbaugh:

Harbaugh is not expected to back down and would likely mount a ferocious defense against any allegation he purposely lied. Harbaugh is famous for being stubborn, both as a player and as a head coach in the NCAA and NFL.

Additionally, it is generally challenging to prove someone knowingly lied without detailed contemporaneous evidence, which sources say the NCAA either lacks or simply doesn't exist.

The NCAA could back off its attempt to gather that admission and resolve the case otherwise, however it has made no indication that it will do that. An NCAA punishment, even a short suspension, on the Level II violations without any admission of lying might be acceptable to Harbaugh. Anything involving admitting dishonesty would not, sources said.

I wish this person good luck. Sisyphus-ass lawyering awaits.

[After THE JUMP: all hail cube!]

Not even close! Michigan's women's 4x400 relay suffered a fall in their first leg in a recent quad meet. They were never heard from again…

…because they got too far in front for anyone to hear them say "lol. lmao."

An unusual rating. Tom VanHaaren evaluates the transfer classes of ESPN's "way too early top 25," which features Michigan at #3. The transfer class evaluation:

Biggest newcomers: Michigan continues to be a major portal player, adding key players on both sides of the ball. Offensive linemen LaDarius Henderson (Arizona State), Myles Hinton (Stanford) and others should help fill holes and provide depth. The Wolverines also added defensive playmakers like Coastal Carolina's Josaiah Stewart and Nebraska's Ernest Hausmann. Tight end AJ Barner (Indiana) should help a group that will miss NFL-bound Luke Schoonmaker.

Remaining holes: Michigan should continue to look for help on defense, especially after losing linemen Mazi Smith and Mike Morris, and cornerback DJ Turner. Another veteran defensive back could help a talented young group featuring cornerback Will Johnson and safety Rod Moore. Stewart should help offset the pass-rushing loss of Morris and Okie, but the Wolverines could use another piece up front. -- Rittenberg

VanHaaren's grade: A. The Wolverines were more active in the portal than usual, and it was a good thing they were, as the program saw 10 players enter the portal since the end of November, including McNamara, All, Okie, defensive lineman George Rooks and receiver Andrel Anthony. But adding Stewart, Hausman, Barner and a few good offensive linemen this offseason help bolster the roster.

I think the DL is probably going to be fine with McGregor and Moore vying with Stewart at end, though I wish Rooks had stuck around to see if he could follow the Mike Morris path. A corner would be nice but it looks like the portal fiesta is largely over and done. 247 has just two uncommitted CBs currently listed; one is ECU's fourth-best CB. The other is a flier USC took who never saw the field. Message boards have muttered about pirating USC's Domani Jackson after there was some social media look-at-me stuff from Jackson, but that's a real longshot. Michigan's likely going to roll with what they've got there.

Jett evaluated. NBA types are talking about Jett Howard as a riser:

If he wants to go the NBA will happily take him in the lottery but there are still a bunch of things he needs to work on even outside of the glaring defensive issues:

First, whenever he comes left off a ball screen, he’s trying to pass more than to score, looking for pocket passes to bigs and coming off too slowly to put any pressure on the basket. Second, his touch around the rim when he does use his left is subpar, and he often tries to use his right hand when on the left side.

It’s too early to be able to tell if Jett’s left will be an inhibitor to true offensive versatility in the NBA or if he’ll continue to need actions tailor-made to get him to his right. What’s worrisome is that, unlike Franz, Jett doesn’t seem to have much of an ability to separate without those staggered screens and running starts. His handle has some flashes to it, but any bit of space he creates from it turns into pull-up jumpers or runners. Having only 15 half-court rim attempts in 18 games is an alarmingly low rate that raises a giant red flag — especially considering how much of Michigan’s offense is designed around getting him separation.

It's possible a family that has a pretty vested interest in Michigan's success now and down the road and is… uh… not in financial difficulty would make a decision that most lottery prospects would not. Here's hoping for a year two from Jett. If Howard's ankle injury keeps him on the shelf a while that might also argue for a return.

The other draft bits. Dane Brugler's mock draft doesn't have any Michigan players in the first round but Mazi Smith (#42), DJ Turner (#58), and Mike Morris (#62) land in the second round. First-round mocks at Yahoo, USA Today, and CBS don't have any Michigan guys. Bright side take on this is that nobody's going to be as hard to replace as Aidan Hutchinson was this year.

Pretty good. PFF's top-graded college safeties largely passes the sniff test and includes a familiar name:

I was going to say something about how he was a true sophomore, wow, but both Kinchens and Burks were also true sophomores. Everyone else on the list above him is gone to the draft, though, so Moore projects as a potential All American if he sticks on the current path.

All hail cube. Anyone in the mood for 1936 Northwestern-Minnesota? Where are you all going? There is a cube!

There is no forward passing but I mean… cube.

Etc.: College football ignorer discovers transfer rules, is lambasted on internet. An excellent, lengthy article on what Michigan's trying to do on the ice. Man has a question, gets an answer.

I do think Hickman for OSU was a pretty good player this year, but their secondary has been absolutely abysmal the last couple of years.  They are going to need an overhaul in their secondary or just continue to play Big 12 football and win games by basketball scores.

I stand with him on calling it a 3-D object (unless we’re being technical sticklers and calling it a 2-D representation on screen or paper.

However, I agree with you on the other half: there’s no way those guy’s height x formation width x formation length is cubic. But it’s *definitely* cuboid!!

The NCAA pushing this stupid 'Harbaugh lied!' thing is the latest gasp of an organization desperately trying to hold onto the idea that they have any serious enforcement power. Michigan is one of the only major programs that would even entertain nonsense like this in today's college sports landscape and the NCAA is trying to take advantage of that to show everyone they are A Very Tough and Strong Organization

At this point Ono just needs to say we're ok with the Level II violations and will have no further discussions on the lying accusation and just stop cooperating with this charade

The way NCAA enforcement works (by members agreeing to be regulated for the sake of competitiveness) that's really the case. The Harbaugh pound sand stand should be adhered to by the school regardless of past practice and never acting outside the lines of authority philosophy.

Prove it or lose the allegation. We aren't accepting the Level 1 charge because the NCAA needs to justify its enforcement fangs.

I find it interesting that the NBA scouting on Jett completely ignores the fact that he's a terrible defender and rebounder at this point in his development.  I realize the NBA would be drafting him for his ability to shoot and score so those things are optional (see: Jaden Ivey) but if anything were to make a radical improvement next year I would think it would be those things.  I hope he stays because he'd be AWESOME as a sophomore.....but I long ago gave up trying to predict these things and getting projected into the early first round is hard to ignore.

Yeah, he's absolutely exceeded my expectations for him offensively even if his willingness to pass has been lacking at times; I notice he tends to hunt for his shot early if it's not falling and that can hamstring the offense.  But absolutely he's an NBA-level player offensively.

The problem is that a lot of guys in the NBA can score; is he demonstrably better scoring the ball than, say, Stauskas coming out of college?  Probably not.  But if you don't play defense teams will hunt you out on switches and abuse you all game and so you'll wind up on the bench playing second-team minutes and that's not what you expect out of a top-15 pick.  With his offense he doesn't need to be a lockdown defender but he has to stay engaged and use his size and length more consistently.

I agree with this take. "Scorer" is one of the least valuable archetypes, because the probability you can do it consistently for a whole game without getting hunted on the other end is so low. A Cam Thomas can absolutely get buckets, but is that really so valuable on a playoff team?

Really interesting article on Naruto... I appreciate his perspective on possession based hockey and how he's adapting some of the principles to hockey from soccer. BUT, hockey still has an inherent physical dimension that soccer does not where those skill based teams can be beaten by stronger teams with (yes) more desire. The trick is to get those possession based chances without giving up on physical necessities of the hockey game.

At first, I was like, are you referring to hockey or soccer when you say "... skill based teams can be beaten by stronger teams with (yes) more desire" -- and thinking about it both ways, I realize it doesn't matter, it's true for both sports.

I suspect you are referring to hockey.  But it happens in soccer all the time.  Explain how/why the USMNT loses all those road games in Central America where we trot out 11 players in European leagues and still lose.  Or why Manchester City ever lost a game the past, oh, five years.  Or, pretty much ANY Liga MX game.  (Is it just me, or does it seem Liga MX outlawed passing the ball backwards to a teammate?)  There is an unquestionable element of physicality/"desire" that, in the course of running around almost without a break for 90 minutes, tends to lead to some results that you wouldn't have expected.

It can be almost impossible to prove someone lied. (And I don't believe Harb did, FWIW.)  Here's what I'll be looking for.

1) Is the conversation recorded or in writing, and what exactly was said?

There's a huge difference between "Have you had any recruiting violations?  Not that I can remember" versus "Did you buy cheeseburgers for James Doe and John Roe on August 23, 2020 at the Brown Jug? Absolutely not. Are you sure you didn't? 100% sure."

(If UM isn't already recording any interviews with NCAA investigators, they should start.)

2) What proof do they have that Harb allegedly lied?

Best case for the NCAA is an email from the morning of the interview that says "Warde, I'm going to lie to the NCAA about the cheeseburgers. Make sure you do too or I'll stop speaking to you - Captain Comeback."  More plausible but still not likely is something like Tattoo-gate, where no one would reasonably believe Tressel forgot that he knew about the scandal.  Based on the leaks, though, it sounds like the NCAA probably has nothing at all on this score.

3) Who gets to decide?

From what I can tell, in 2022, the NCAA suspended the old Condi Rice-designed independent review process, because it was too slow to actually decide anything. On 1/1/23, they started a new "peer review and appeal" process, but I have no idea how it works. If it turns out that NCAA stooges are the judge and jury, that's obviously not ideal.

I heard a rumor on reddit that the NCAA BS stems from Dudek dropping off the evidence of violations on his way out the door out of spite. Is there any truth to that?

If true, we should be celebrating the findings, not hiding from them. Think about it, you’ve got a disgruntled former employee trying to throw his ex-boss under the bus and the best he can come up with is a couple cheeseburgers, an analyst on the field and a workout viewed remotely? Lol!

The fact Vox basically fired anyone who wrote about sports but let Dylan Matthews alone so he could be surprised how college football works (and really how the world works) is why I doubt they'll ever be successful as a media entity.

In terms of next year's football team the question at corner remains something that needs to be figured out and probably can't be fully papered over by moving Sainristil out the edge but they are likely to only face 2-3 teams capable of making that a problem so they have time.  I doubt they'll get anyone else from the portal save potentially some spring transfers that could happen from roster shakeups but at that point you're likely getting someone worse than what you've got on the roster; UM isn't MSU so they don't need to try to pull failed starters from better teams to incrementally improve themselves.

I hope Jett Howard does what works best for him but he'll need to improve significantly as a defender and rebounder to make it in the NBA.  He's obviously talented but he's not an uber-elite athlete and the G League is full of guys who can do one thing well but not the other.  I do think he can get there as a defender but he's going to need to get that seasoning either on the bench in the NBA or in college.

Yeah, defense isn't just about effort (try-hard guys suck at defense as much as guys who are disinterested) but Howard being out seemed to force the entire team to refocus.  Dickinson looked better offensively because he must have known the onus was on him to carry the team, guys like Tschetter and Reed knew they needed to be even more engaged on both ends, and Bufkin and Dug moved up the pecking order.

I hold no ill will toward Howard; when you can score like he does that should be your focus.  But this team isn't good enough around him to get away with him lacked on the defensive side of the ball (as well as being a bit of a black hole passing on offense).  Long-term you want and need him on the court but a run where guys have to identify what works and what doesn't certainly can't be any worse than what we've seen recently.

The team does have a number of mostly unplayed bodies at the CB spot - the fact that only Will Johnson was better than Green this season doesn’t mean all of the guys we haven’t seen start will be bad next season.

Given the coaches have been very liberal with the portal, even in places where we seemed set, I think we should interpret “haven’t grabbed a portal CB” as a good sign about the guys already on campus.

Can Will Johnson, Sainristil, plus a sophomore to be named later be better than the 2021 CBs? I think probably yes.
