Press release:

U-M Football Head Coach Brady Hoke Announces Wide Receiver Stonum will Redshirt 2011 Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – University of Michigan football head coach Brady Hoke announced Sunday (Aug. 7) that senior wide receiver Darryl Stonum (Stafford, Texas/Dulles HS) will redshirt the 2011 season.

“While it would be great to have Darryl on the field this season, we feel it is in his best interest and the best interest of our program for him to redshirt,” said Hoke.  “Darryl will continue to be an important part of our team and family.  He has done everything we have asked him to do, but our number one priority is to help Darryl grow as a person.”

Hoke also announced the suspension of sophomore punter Will Hagerup (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitefish Bay HS) for the first four games of the season and junior wide receiver Terrence Robinson (Klein, Texas/Oak HS) for the season opener for violating team rules.

Stonum's redshirt is obviously an effect of his second DUI in two years; Hagerup and Robinson's naughtiness is unknown.

Stonum's absence will be felt, as no one on the roster has his combination of size and speed. Michigan still has seniors Martavious Odoms and Junior Hemingway, though, and those two were about as productive as Stonum was. Folks like to rotate their wide receivers, though, and without Stonum the backups are untested Je'Ron Stokes, Jeremy Jackson, and Jerald Robinson. Michigan might think about getting Roundtree some reps on the outside now.

This is Hagerup's second strike after he missed the Ohio State game last year for the proverbial undisclosed violation of team rules. In his stead Seth Broekhuizen took over, averaging 29 yards a kick. Michigan will probably turn to freshman Matt Wile; Wile averaged 42 yards per attempt as a high school senior.

Robinson probably wasn't going to play anyway.

SILVER LINING: If Stonum can get someone to drive him around this year, his return in 2012 should soften the blow of losing Odoms and Hemingway. Michigan still needs receivers stat.

SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE W/ MICHAEL FLOYD: Floyd had two MIPs, which are nothing, and the one DUI. Stonum had two DUIs and went to jail for not doing the probation on the first one. Please refrain from outing yourself as a derp by derping about Notre Derp.

With Hemingway, Odoms, Rountree around in 2011, Stonum was likely to see no more than 50% of offensive snaps (whenever he returned from suspension).  Losing him just gives more time to Odoms primarily, and maybe incrementaly to Stokes, Robinson, etc.

In 2012, he'll play the majority of snaps, and he'll be taking time away from unproven players in Stokes, Robinson, etc.

To compare:

Using Stonum in 2011:  Fewer plays for Odoms (a proven senior), a partial season, a deep WR corps is deeper.

Using Stonum in 2012:  Fewer plays for Robinson (RS So), a full season, a shallow WR corps is deeper.

In short, the relative gain/replacement value/marginal improvement/whatever you want to call it is much better in 2012.

On top of all that Stonum should be more mature, more motivated, and he'll certainly know the playbook and offense better a year from now.

It's better for the program indeed.

A not insignificant point, imo.  To me this was one of Hoke's first real tests, and I think he passed it.  It's a balanced and fair response to a very serious situation, and gives a kid who clearly needs it a chance to grow up and get his head on straight.  Kicking Stonum off the team would have been a loss for everyone, though not an unreasonable reaction to two DUIs.  On the other hand, not punishing him at all was (for Michigan) out of the question.

Hoke found a third way, and fingers crossed it will work out well for everyone.

You're fat, you're mine, and I NEVER forget.

What is the consensus on Je'Ron Stokes being able to step up this year?  He was a highly rated 4* coming in 2009 and was a nice addition to the 2009 class by signing up for Michigan on NSD.

All you're saying is true, but you're making a big assumption that Stonum will return to the team in 2012.  We have no knowledge of the breadth of his problem or his mental state at this point.  Is it possible that he will return?  Certainly, but is it likely given the circumstances?  Seeing that he's on thin ice right now and his past behavior, I'd actually put his chances at less then 50-50.

As far as Hagerup is concerned, seeing that nothing's come up in the public record yet, the best guess on the violation of team rules is related either to academics or a second drug test failure.  On the latter, the pattern fits--one game suspension for first time, four game suspension for second.  What happens with the third violation of team rules?  Does he get a one year suspension like Stonum or will he be booted from the team?  I hope it doesn't come to that because he's a pretty talented punter and if he's looking at continuing into the NFL as a possibiity, he needs to straighten things up.  The same, obviously, goes for Stonum as well, although given his record to date, any chance at a professional career is in greater jeopardy.

I hope both of them take care of their personal lives and turn things around.  If it doesn't happen this season and they both lose their spots on the team, then Michigan's recruiting class for 2012 almost assuredly goes up by at least one more player.

However, if Stonum, given the opportunity put in front of him, can't get his life together he has bigger problems. I don't know him or anything, but I'd take the bet on his side if given even odds. Most people are going to respond positively to this kind of thing.  Without the distractions and pressures of playing on Saturday, Stonum can spend the next school year focusing on school and getting everything together for 2012 and beyond.

He has the talent to be an NFL player.  Next year, he'll have an open opportunity with a veteran QB and OL.  All the kid has to do is find a frickin designated driver to avoid trouble.  He's got everything going for him and it would be sad if it went to waste.

In my mind, Hoke's laid out a path for him where he's suitably punished, but the reward to find the right path remains.

We needed Hagerup, especially for ND. Hopefully Wile can be decent enough at punter too. And another significant difference between Floyd and Stonum is that Floyd wasn't suspended. I understand that what Stonum did was worse, but a DUI is a DUI. It at least deserves a 1 game suspension, if not more. I am happy with the decision regarding Stonum though. Good enough outcome.

We can still comment on that it seems that Floyd will see no suspension whatsoever for what is his 3rd alcohol related offense. The 2 situations are not equal and no one should say they are,  but missing an entire season is significantly more than not missing anything.

but what it suggests to me is that Stonum's issues are more acute and not yet resolved.  Stonum struck me as immature (awesome, but immature) in his dealing with the press, etc. last year, and I doubt he is taking that well to "life changes."  Out with the massive tinted sub-glasses - insert AA meetings, not an easy adjustment for somebody who seems to kind of see himself as a bad-ass in the third person kind of way.  I can hear him saying "Darryl Stonum doesn't change for nobody, man."  I think Hoke's hand was probably forced into this by Stonum's actions or lack thereof.

I think to call Floyd's two MIP's "nothing", is a frickin joke.  While most college aged students drink before they are 21, most college students also do not represent the university by being on a full-ride scholarship and playing for the football team.  I would understand a slap on the wrist for one MIP but a healthy suspension should be in line for number 2 and then throw on a DUI.  Come on, open your eyes.

Your tailgate party is too early/awesome and the cops come over and decide they want to check the ID of the kid taking the two story beer bong.

That old bitch who lives on Greenwood calls the police on a house party you're attending.  Cops come in, check IDs. Whoops, MIP'd. (I have no idea if those old people still live at the end of Vaughn or Greenwood, whichever one it was).

Your RA decides to go on a power trip and rather than dumping out/taking your alcohol she calls DPS and/or AAPD. BOOM, MIP'd.

You're heading across campus to a party and the buddy who's spending the night studying but volunteered to drop you off gets pulled over, cops see you in the back with a case. MIP'd.

I put up a tough front, but deep down I just want to be held.

Props to Coach Hoke on what I can imagine was a tough decision regarding Stonum.  Press has been on Coach about what will happen to Stonum.  The situation clearly has been looming for awhile now.  The easy thing would have been suspending Stonum for the opener, but Coach clearly did what was best for the program.

Coach Schembechler always believed it was better to start off as a tough disciplinarian and become softer as needed, rather than the other way around.  Its good Coach Hoke establishes disciplinary procedure upfront, too.  Hopefully Stonum's teammates and future Wolverines realize the expectations that come with donning the Maize and Blue.

Not surprised by Stonum; hopefully Hagerup figures out how to play by the rules (I have my assumptions of what "rules" a college kid breaks, but I'll keep quiet for now), as he might find himself out of a job depending on how Wile plays.  This defense needs good field position to be successful (most do, I know), and if you give up 20 net yards per punt, that's not going to help anything.

I'm happy with how Hoke handled the Stonum situation, but I do think Floyd's situation is not so different that he should be able to start day 1.  Three alcohol-related offenses are bad for anyone; if a student had multiple MIPs he/she would have some explaining to do before the school's disciplinary board unless times have changed since I was in the college.  A DUI also doesn't really help his case.  Yes, Stonum may be the bigger goober when it comes to drinking, but Floyd is not winning any prizes himself.

Regarding Stonum, though, I am not sure that he is getting punished much, either. If he plays every game in 2012 would he really have been punished at all?

You are presuming that Darryl Stonum can manage to keep his nose out of trouble for 12 months. There is very little evidence he can do that, and Brady Hoke (IMHO) has determined that as well. He's essentially said "I don't think you can keep from fucking up, and therefore it's not worth keeping you eligible for this season. If you can surprise us all, fine, we'll see you in 2012."

I think Stonum has played his last down of Michigan football.

Hagerup needs to get his head in gear, too. I do not want to repeat the punting debacle at OSU last year, and now both punting and kicking fall to a freshman.

in my opinion Stonum should have been dismissed.  I'm normally loath to speak in judgment of someone and something I know nothing about, but the second DUI is too much for me.  His actions indicate a lack of respect for the opportunity afforded him and an inablilty to learn from them.  Plus, as others have pointed out, this move actually benefits Michigan football and seems like less of a punishment as a result.  That Hoke was not around for Stonum's prior problems is the only reason I'm not really put off by this.

Oh, well.  At least he's not Glenn Winston.

Makes It harder to win this year, and if anything has been shown, you need to win early and often as Michigan coach.

As for Stonum, if he had any NFL aspirations, waiting a year to go pro could be costing at minimum hundreds of thousands of dollars he can never get back.

However, there is also a difference between their punishments. And that difference is the size of the Grand Canyon. Actually Stonum's punishment is infinitely bigger than Floyd's because Floyd received absolutely nothing. (If I'm wrong with my math theory please correct me.)

So, IMO we can still rip on Kelly and ND for that decision. Floyd's punishment did not fit his crime. Period. We don't even have to bring Stonum into the situation.

Hagerup violated team rules, got suspended for the biggest game of the year.

He violated team rules again, strike 2, and gets 4 games.

Granted, we don't know what those violations were, but we do know he didn't get cited for anything. It would be public record if he did I'm pretty sure.

So then we have Floyd, who now has 3 strikes that were all cited by law enforcement, and he doesn't miss any game time.

I don't think I have to say anything further.
