A Short Collection Of Instant Reaction Spring Game Takes Comment Count

Alex.Drain April 2nd, 2022 at 3:24 PM

Team Blue defeated Team Maize down at the Big House today in Michigan Football's 2022 Spring Game by a final score of 20-12. It was a day filled with refereeing quirks (including flags thrown by Jim Harbaugh), extravagant celebrations, and plenty of little-known walk ons. An exhibition game doesn't merit a detailed recap like we'd do for a regular season game, since the flow and narrative of the game is not important, but I felt it would still be good to put a post up on the site so all of you can rant in the comments. I presume Seth or Brian will have more detailed takes after a proper re-watch during the week, but this piece will give you a few quick kneejerk takes and observations about what we just witnessed:

OFFENSE

Davis Warren has a cannon for an arm. Today we got a sizable glimpse at walk-on backup QB Davis Warren, who has been battling Alan Bowman for the QB3 designation in spring practice. What stood out the most about Warren was his huge arm, zipping the ball down the field and attempting several deep balls, two of which connected (one to Donovan Edwards and one to Amorion Walker). Warren has more raw talent than your typical walk-on due to his unique story, and that seemed apparent today.

Alex Orji is Joe Milton 2.0. You could say the same about Orji in terms of arm strength, but his accuracy was rough. Orji went 1/7 for 9 yards, and most of his throws were way overthrown, rifled over a receiver's head or 10 yards too deep. However, his muscular build was apparent, rushing seven times for 35 yards, including one 23 yard keeper. Team Maize dialed up a couple designed Orji keepers in short yardage situations, so if you're looking for who will fill the VillariCat role this season, it looks like Orji.

Michigan's skill position players are all good at throwing. With the memory of Donovan Edwards' bomb in the B1G Championship Game still fresh in the mind, Team Blue dialed up two different double pass plays and both worked. Darrius Clemons and Erick All both delivered accurate balls that were completed for 21 and 31 yards, respectively. At this point you have to wonder how many of Michigan's skill position guys can throw the football accurately.

Darrius Clemons hype is real! Michigan's true freshman receiver answered some of the hype he's been getting in spring ball by emerging as Team Blue's favorite receiver. He made three catches for 52 yards, and the most memorable (by far) was a diving 35-yard TD catch. Clemons toasted Joshua Luther down the seam and Alan Bowman overthrew the pass. Clemons laid out and hauled it in, leading to a selfie celebration in the end zone. Kid looks good.

A nice game for Tavierre Dunlap. The Wolverines have an open competition for the burly back role behind Corum and Edwards, and Dunlap is currently the favorite. Today's performance was a nice showing from the RS freshman in his pursuit of that job. Dunlap rushed 18 times for 73 yards and a TD, looking confident running the ball. He did drop a screen pass, but he likely won't be asked to do that much when the season gets started.

DEFENSE

Lots of blitzes. You weren't supposed to hit the QB as part of the rules, but that didn't stop the defenses from getting pressure. Both teams dialed up plenty of blitzes and a lot of them got home. You never show anything schematic in an exhibition game, so there's not much to read into it, but I found it a rather interesting development.

So far, so good for Mike Sainrstil, The Corner. Sainristil didn't pop up much at his new defensive position, but he did memorably get a PBU on Andrel Anthony and looked comfortable doing it. We also saw Sainristil on offense on one occasion too, suggesting that he may feature on both sides of the ball this fall.

Flashes from Mason Graham. The true freshman DT has been getting some spring buzz and he featured in a few moments, including when he drew a holding call on new center Victor Oluwatimi. Graham showed good burst off the line of scrimmage and it seems like the hype that he could see playing time this fall might have some legs.

A solid showing from German Green. The brother of Gemon has seldom seen time away from special teams in his Michigan tenure, and that figures to stay the same this fall, but he did show up in the secondary today. Green broke up a couple passes and I felt it was still worth it to shout him out.

The first look at Will Johnson. I didn't notice the 5* true freshman CB all that much today, but he held his own in the end zone against a route run by Cornelius Johnson. That's not the easiest assignment for a young player, but Johnson did fine. That's about all I can say after first watch.

I agree with all of those takes and I'll add a few of my own:

+ It seems Michigan will have a legit 2 deep at every OL position this season which is quite exciting.

+ Freshman WRs impressed. Besides Darius Clemson physically looking the part, Amorion Walker seemed formidably tall & long. He'll benefit from college S&C as an early enrollee. Finally, redshirt freshman Cristian Dixon played and made a catch.

+ CB play seems much improved across the board. DBs staying in phase and turning their heads in time to bat down passes is a positive development.

+ Freshman TE Colston Loveland had a nice catch (on the pass from Erick All). There are some whispers that Loveland can have a significant impact like Georgia TE Brock Bowers did but he'll have to contend with upperclassmen (Erick All, Luke Schoonmaker) at his position group.

+ Alex Orji struggled with passing accuracy but I think we can use him selectively in some diamond formation plays.

Warren looks like a really nice piece to have in the current freshman (by eligibility) class. If, hypothetically, McCarthy blows up and leaves for the NFL after next year, he’s a plausible competitor down the road, and at worst a high floor backup.

Hell, I thought he looked as good as most starters in the B1G!  He certainly could have started at Iowa, NW, Ill, and IU last year based on his play yesterday.  Those teams would trip over themselves to get a guy like under center.

Well, maybe not Iowa.  Ferentz doesn't really like dynamic players.  Hell, he ran off Jake Ruddddock!!

It feels as though Harbaugh is hitting it at all levels currently at Michigan.  I have faith.

He is a guy that stands by his players, no matter what.  Seeing past players like Devin, Shoe Laces all being a part of the program is awesome.

And then we have Mike Hart back as well as others.

Go easy on Alex Orji!  He's an early enrollee freshman, so let's not put a Joe Milton tag on him just yet.  I remember years ago going to Clemson's spring game and they had a freshman named Taj Boyd who could run but was very inaccurate.  He turned out all right.  I thought Orji looked a lot like young Taj Boyd, in which case he might be pretty useful in about 2 or 3 years.

Alex Orji will be a starting QB some day, hopefully for Michigan.  He’s got all the physical and leadership tools required for the position.  He played great for a first game against college competition before a crowd in a huge stadium.  As Coach Harbaugh measures talent, Orji is a FOOTBALL PLAYER, who obviously knows and loves the game.  Orji has the skills and abilities one can’t coach. As for the skills and abilities he still needs to develop, he just needs to demonstrate his willingness to learn from the Michigan coaches.

"He played great for a first game against college competition"

Good lord—on what football planet is going 1-7 for 9 yards while repeatedly and badly overthrowing his receivers reasonably characterized as "great"?

Nobody should be writing Orji off at this point in his career—he's hardly the first pure freshman to struggle throwing the ball—but that's a bad performance in an offense that depends heavily on completing passes to a deep and talented group of receivers. Orji isn't playing quarterback in the run-oriented option offense that Rick Leach played in.

QBs that have a history of not being accurate don’t typically change that part of their game.  I’ll always root for the best.

Sainrstil is just a for real football athlete. The dude is going to have an impact on defense.

Tavi looked good as a power back and he is young with room to grow.

Jenkins is going to be good. He is more athletic than most guys who play his position.

This team has good upside in lots of places.

Warren looks like a potentially good Big Ten Qb.

All will play in the NFL and Loveland is going to be All Big Ten before he is done. Kid is smooth and still just a kid.

Our O-line was great last year and going to be just as good.

I am rooting hard for Orji to buck the trend around accuracy rarely improving, but he had a 52% completion rate in HS, with a 33:15 TD:INT ratio. That doesn’t bode well as a QB, unless Tebow or JT Barrett is Orji’s prototype (which might be the case).

I loved his second effort to pick up the first down on a run that the D had dead to rights.

Yeah, you rarely get a walk on with this kind of talent.  If he hadn't been sick and also missed time from COVID, he probably would have been a scholarship QB somewhere.

Right now, the battle for our 3rd string QB is critical, because we don't know what McCarthy's health is going to be.  There is at least some chance (unfortunately) that our 3rd string QB will end up being the 2022 backup.

when you sign up for 'schollie's', the school is committed to you/the athlete and can't pull them as a matter of convenience or because you don't pan out on the playing field.  they can 'process' you to the extent your 4 years is up, and of course can dismiss 'for cause', but that's about it.

Those double pass plays; it's not going to be Edwards to Wilson as we saw in the B1G game against Iowa. I saw the first double pass play and thought that will be several versions of that and disguised well. This is going to be an interesting wrinkle in offensive play calling. So when it's unleashed; watch out!

All we saw this afternoon was glimpse of things to come on both sides of the ball. The players and coaches were enthusiastic and mentally involved into the game. I liked what I saw. Can't wait for JJ and Ronnie Bell to get back into the mix.

...give you a few quick kneejerk takes

Aren’t they called Hawt Takes? 😀

Great write up.  I don’t recall many positives from previous Spring Games.  Maybe it’s the lingering excitement of 42-27 and the B1G Championship

Love the all blue unis.

I'm happy never to see the all maize unis again except for something meaningless like this spring game.  Not even for a bowl game that nobody cares about.

Orji is what we expected - a project.  In the class after a 5-star you just want someone that you can develop.  He didn't show anything today to get me excited or make me worry.  Long way to go....seems like a solid #5 QB.

I didn't really see any organic edge rushing, which may have been unrealistic but would have been nice.  The various interior and hybrid guys did ok.

I love our WR depth and I wonder what is the legal maximum you can play at once.  Bell, Johnson, Anthony, Wilson, Henning, Clemons, Dixon, all the TEs....yikes.  Run and shoot!

Not sure if you were serious, but the answer is 5. You have to have 7 players in the line if scrimmage and the 5 that are “inside” the right and left “end” are ineligible. So since you need a QB, my math says 5 eligible receivers max on any play.
