Michigan Releases Stake Statement
WE CLAIM THIS FIELD IN THE NAME OF COMMITMENT AND HARD-TO-SEE OBJECTS
This is a real thing.
October 26, 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Below is a statement from University of Michigan head football coach Brady Hoke:
“I want to publicly apologize to Coach Dantonio as well as the players and supporters of Michigan State for our act of poor sportsmanship displayed pre-game yesterday. I spoke with Mark earlier today and expressed to him that we meant no disrespect to his team. During our regular Friday night team meeting, one of the topics presented to motivate our team was a history lesson addressing commitment and teamwork in a tough environment. A tent stake was presented to the team as a symbol of this concept. The stake was brought into our locker room as a visual reminder, and one of our team leaders chose to take it out on the field. As the leader of our football program, I take full responsibility for the actions of our team. We believe in displaying a high level of respect at the University of Michigan and unfortunately that was not reflected by this action prior to kickoff.”
We're very sorry a thing meant to be driven into a field was driven into your field.

You're right, MSU should have started taking a knee after halftime. Anything less is unsportsmanlike

The way I see it: if you're running onside kicks and still trying to score, you can't complain if the opponent also behaves as if the game's not over.
The only way MSU ends up with the field position to score on seven running plays, is a pointless failed onside kick.

I'm so sick of our meathead coach and or MBA flacky-run program mismanaging everything it comes into contact with. They can't all get fired soon enough.

This is sad. Yeah, the stake was a stupid stunt. But Sparty got their revenge touchdown. So we're even. Drop it.

Stupid motivational props are charming when you're a good coach. "Into Thin Air" or like anything Bacari Alexander has ever done in a pre-game speech for example.
When you're a shitty coach, stupid motivational props are stupid.

Unfortunately, Dantionio sees everything as a slight. They dare to play a football in Ann Arbor? They dare to have a bigger stadium? Michigan has more wins than us? All if these things are reasons to be offended.

So you're calling Jamie Morris "incredibly petty?" He essentially said this morning it was lame and stupid. Both he and Bacon said that other alumni Michigan players have expressed the same opinion to them about it.
If it was MSU or OSU that had done it in Michigan stadium, everybody here would have been up in arms.

If you gotta get offended at the other team to get motivated, in a rivalry game, then .... well .... shoot. But I feel the same about actually using a stake. It's Michigan State, why do you need a stake to motivate yourself?

Can't think of a bigger lose/lose decision than driving a stake into Sparty field. This was planned & people thought this was a good idea?

Full disclosure: I laughed hard when what's his face gave the double bird to the Big House. I mean, that's the dream! You got kicked out of The Game, who among us would want to do that in the Shoe? It's how we all feel about them, and how they feel about us

No one should want to get kicked out of a game ever, especially The Game. Everyone should want to shake the hand of a Buckeye team in the post-game in front of the Buckeye faithful with them knowing they took a clean and hard fought beating on the field.
October 26th, 2014 at 3:22 PM ^
for sure, but if you were to get ejected from a game? how would you feel?

What if FSU did it? What if a guy on a horse painted up like an dime store indian had thrust a lance into the Block M? What if the team, after handing Michigan a humiliating loss, had ripped up part of the sodded field to take home to their garden? Do you think Michigan would be all up in arms about it? Well it damn well happened, it happened on September 28, 1991 and I haven't heard the first reference about it since.
The difference, Michigan was curb stomped. Know what else, had Michigan curb stomped MSU yesterday all we would have heard out of former players would be snickers and "Job well done."
October 26th, 2014 at 3:41 PM ^
There was never a guy on a horse who thrust a lance into the Block M on the field at Michigan Stadium. Didn't happen.
Yes, they took some of our turf after the loss. Good for them, but it has nothing to do with Michigan and Michigan State in 2014.

It works.
Its called "getting the rivalry" which I thought was a big deal to Michigan fans. Its part of the reason we have the guy in charge that we do. You know, because no one had to teach him the words to "The Victors".
Dantonio does what great coaches do: He motivates his team. He gets them to play better than they are.
Meanwhile, with two weeks of practice, Michigan comes out looking sloppy and lethargic, like they do every week.

Tough words, appearances, and symbols over on-the-field substance:

Skywriting
No shirt sleeves or jacket
Beyonce
Countdown clocks
Alternate uniforms
Notre Dame is chicken/Chicken dance music
Navy SEALs
"Football is a tough man's game"
Noodle
RR didn't use blocking sleds haw haw haw we're so much tougher than he is
Posing shirtless in pre-season to show off muscles that don't actually do anything during games
Driving a stake into the turf and pulling up your shirt and stomping like you're a football badass
October 26th, 2014 at 2:39 PM ^
Sadly, this hits the nail on the head.
EDIT: And you forgot one: written apologies after statements professing ignorance or confusion:
Michigan this season leads the Big Ten in turnovers and the nation in written apology statements issued.
