Michigan 71, Rutgers 62 Comment Count

In a game without their head coach, one starter, and one bench player, Michigan needed a hero or two to rise. Tonight, the Wolverines got just that from three of the youngest pieces on their team: Caleb Houstan, Kobe Bufkin, and Frankie Collins. The three freshmen turned in some of their better performances of the season, particularly in the second half, shooting Michigan by the Rutgers Scarlett Knights tonight at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor by a score of 71-62. For a team that needs to perform well in the final two weeks to qualify for the NCAA Basketball Tournament, tonight was a big start.

The first half was rather evenly matched. Michigan came out hot shooting the three, getting a couple quick makes from Caleb Houstan, before going 0-fer the rest of the half from beyond the long line. Michigan's offense shot 43% from the field but dealt with eight turnovers that brought their offensive flow to a halt at some points. Hunter Dickinson scored 12, and the team got just two total points in the first stanza by someone other than Dickinson, Eli Brooks, Houstan, or DeVante' Jones (Johns Jr. had a tip-in). Defensively, Michigan saw some tough makes go down from the likes of Caleb McConnell and Ron Harper Jr., but did collect five blocks and didn't allow a made three pointer. Michigan led 32-30 at the break.

The first four minutes of the second half moved along at a reasonable pace, with each team answering the other's buckets. A Jones turnover created a transition chance for Rutgers and Cliff Omoruyi slammed home a basket that evened the score up at 38 apiece with 16:12 to go. At this point it became Freshman Time. After Jones missed a three pointer, Brandon Johns Jr. siphoned up a rebound, kicked it out to Houstan, and the freshman knocked down a big three pointer. A Geo Baker miss at the other end followed, and very quickly Michigan was freeing up Houstan for a look again, this time from the other end of the court. Swish. Two treys in the span of twenty five seconds had Michigan ahead six.

Frankie Collins and Kobe Bufkin were nice off the bench [Campredon]

Rutgers responded with a couple deuces to pull within a pair, but then DeVante' Jones chipped in some nice jumpers to push it from 44-42 to 48-42. Little did we know, but this was the beginning of a 15-2 run that would cement Michigan's control of the contest. Eli Brooks made a couple of tough shots from inside the arc, and that's when Kobe Bufkin and Frankie Collins started to do their parts. Both freshman guards played some of their best defense of the season at one end, and then entered a groove at the other end. Bufkin made a three with 10:31 to go to push it to 55-45 and give Michigan their largest lead of the game. Collins provided good defense on dribble drive penetration and got Hunter Dickinson to help out at the rim. Frankie snagged it, charged down the floor, and finished a slick eurostep layup, forcing Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell to take a timeout.

The timeout was taken to stop the bleeding, but the blood wasn't done gushing. Michigan got another stop and Bufkin made a shot, stretching the lead to 59-45. Rutgers finally drew a shooting foul after that and Geo Baker made both free throws to stem the Michigan tide with 8:43 left. Over the next 3.5 minutes, the game was fought to a draw, with Michigan doing a good job to deny any long Rutgers runs by answering with makes. Rutgers was only able to shave two points off the margin in this span and with 5 minutes to go, the score sat at 65-55. When Eli Brooks knocked down a three a minute later, Michigan had a stranglehold on the game.

Another solid game from DeVante' Jones in the second half [Campredon]

Faced with a similar position to last Thursday's game against Iowa, Michigan didn't mess around and let the opposition back in it. Geo Baker pulled up from two on a tough shot, and Dickinson snagged the rebound, which was a good encapsulation of Michigan's defensive effort in this one: better wing defense than normal, forcing gobs of long twos, and solid defensive rebounding limited multiple shot attempt possessions. Though Ron Harper Jr. converted an alley-oop on the next trip down the floor, another Caleb Houstan three from well behind the arc made it 71-57 with exactly three minutes to go. Paul Mulcahy turned it over on the ensuing Rutgers possession, and that pretty much wrapped it up. Final score: 71-62.

Houstan led Michigan with 21 points, shooting 5/9 from distance. The Wolverines are now 10-1 when Houstan shoots >33.3% from three point range this season. Hunter Dickinson wasn't mentioned much in this piece, because it was a rather unspectacular night, yet he still posted a typical 16 and 11 stat line playing all but one minute tonight (!!). DeVante' Jones continued his quietly great second half by scoring 14 and snagging 7 boards. Eli Brooks scored 11 and then the combination of Bufkin and Collins chipped in 7, though their contributions were greatest on the defensive end. If those two can be more usable defensive options, that very much changes the picture for Phil Martelli's crew.

Anyway you slice it, this was a big victory. Michigan needs to win 3 of their last 5 to feel good heading into the Big Ten Tournament. Tonight was victory #1, and it's big to knock off a fellow bubble team without a key piece in Moussa Diabate. The Wolverines will get Diabate and Terrance Williams II back for Sunday's game against Illinois. It will not be an easy contest, but it is an opportunity to notch a Q1(A) victory and bolster the tournament resume. That game is scheduled for 2:00 PM EST and will be televised on CBS.

That's why you wear the maize unis.  The energy of the sun, not the darkness of night!  Whoever did the blue out against our rival needs to be fired.

  • Love that this caused Michigan to play Houstan at the four which is his more natural position. Perfect time for him to have his career game.
  • Great defense and energy all night
  • Awesome that Martelli basically said give Saddi and Eisley HC jobs.
  • For the first time ever in kenpom time, I didn't mind Michigan letting it get a little closer because a margin of 9 instead of 14 will help Rutgers get to top 75 in NET.

LFG!

You wonder that there's nobody in the stands, then you come on this board and find some knucklehead saying he can't wait until Jones is gone and five other knuckleheads approving. This just isn't a place to come for enlightened conversation on game nights.

Maybe so, maybe so. Jones definitely was getting badmouthed earlier in the season, and Dylan at Umhoops did some digging and found that he was as or more productive as Smith last year. He's rock-solid, a very conscientious person, and even protecting the ball better now that he's adjusted.

Detroit News headline: "Wolverines' acting coach Martelli wins debut."

A quick glance at "acting coach" and I didn't think temporary coach but a coach of acting.

Probably not.

This was a huge swing game. Even if we lose Illinois I think we actually do matchup well with MSU provided the transition defense renaissance is real. Shut off MSU transition game and we can take that. Right after that is the return leg for Iowa and hopefully we can get that one also and lock this up before the OSU game. Illinois we’re playing with house money but if we do lose then I think we have to win the final two home games unless we want to make OSU pretty much make or break.

Well, they were getting worse and worse until about three weeks ago.  It's improved from there but it was so bad in the 100s that it wasn't hard.

That said, the defense has been pretty good over that stretch.  We've made some good adjustments (no more blitzing ball screens, the zone mixed in is working) and teams aren't scorching the nets on pull ups like they were in the middle part of the season (which was molsty just bad luck).

Putting Houstan at the nominal 4 and Moussa at 3 changes nothing.  It's the same lineup.

I would like to see more Bufkin at the three with Houstan at the four against smaller lineups.  That's the whole point. Play smaller and get 5 shooters on the court to open things up for Dickinson in the post and Jones driving.

Illinois plays very small aside from Kofi with 6-6 Grandison at the 4. They're the perfect team to play a lineup with Houstan at the four and Bufkin at the three.

MSU plays weird guys but Houstan can guard Hauser.

Def want Diabate guarding Murray against Iowa and probably Liddell against OSU but our best offensive lineup still has Houstan at four and Bufkin at the three.

Yeah. I agree on the first post about Houstan at the 4. He knocked down all 5 of those playing at the 4 spot, which is where he belongs and Kobe has come along enough to give you some solid minutes at the 3. A lot of people have said that all year, and I think Juwan struggled a bit this year and sometimes played the all PF lineup.
You have to play Moussa, but he can split time at the 4 and 5 and that gets you minutes with Caleb at the 4 as the back up. I don’t think BJJ or T-Will have a role on the best version of this team

To me the lynchpin of disappointment--and I don't like to criticize kids on message boards--is that much more was expected of Johns. If he's contributing 6-12 a game and taking his open shots, ripping down rebounds, spacing, the sub pattern, all these things come a little easier for the whole team and--my hunch--we've got two or three more wins.

In retrospect, the bench and new players have been slow developing, but that freshmen make big contributions early is just not something you can ever take for granted--I don't think that Moussa or Caleb are necessarily behind the curve. If those two are full functional features here heading into the postseason and Kobe and Frankie are just not giving away the ball, I'm pretty encouraged, though. You can start to see the team that Juwan and co. thought they had.

Michigan needs to win 3 of their last 5 to feel good heading into the Big Ten Tournament

I have to disagree with this. If Michigan wins of 2 of the last 4 from here on out, then they will make the NCAAT regardless of the results in the BTT.

Winning 3 of these last 5 will improve all Michigan's rankings among the resume and efficiency metrics, most importantly the likelihood that a 3-2 record will slide them up into right around a 30 NET ranking (maybe even inside the top-30). Sure, the losing record against Q1 teams would still be a black mark, but 5 total Q1 wins will probably give them the 2nd most out of every bubble team considering how few Q1 opportunities there are for teams across the bubble "landscape".

And, what helps Michigan out even more is that multiple other P6 conferences are having pretty down years. ACC has like 2 teams that are locks right now and like 2 bubble teams. PAC-12 has like 2 or 3 locks and then no other teams even close to sniffing the tourney. For as good as the 'top' teams in the SEC have been this year, there is not a strong bubble team from that conference either. That's three of the P6 conferences that will likely receive 2 fewer at-large bids compared to last year. It might be 3 fewer in the ACC's case with how bad that conference has been this year. If this makes you worry about bid thieves from any of the mid-majors, I don't think you should. Michigan's resume, specifically the metrics and the amount of Q1 and Q2 wins, will give Michigan the edge when comparing team sheets against plenty of other teams fighting for an at-large bid.

17 is the magic number. 17 wins, and they are most likely in.

Free throwing shooting so much better than the start of the season. Kobe Bufkin will be a baller. Really like his poise and style. Team showed some tenacity after Wisconsin debacle. Praying we meet them in the tourney and pull off a win.

I'm just glad Houstan is finally playing the 4 like I've been saying the whole season. He should have been a Livers replacement, not a Franz one.

Great win tonight. The 3 point shooting finally complimented the 2 point offense, and the defense seemed slightly better than normal.

Kobe is going to be good, he just needs to figure out his 3point shooting, but he's just smooth man.

Unfortunately, he was probably only there because of available bodies.  We'll likely go back to a lineup with essentially 3 bigs on Sunday.  Although we'll see if Martelli is willing to play some smaller lineups.  Illinois is the perfect team to do it against because they're pretty small aside from Kofi (and Hunter matches up well against him).

I thought Martelli did a good job with the rotations. It made sense to start Johns but that obviously wasn't working so he tried Jace quickly and then settled on Houstan at the 4 and kept with it.

I also liked the Frankie stretch in the second half. Started as a breather for Jones but went well and pushed the lead to 10 so he stuck with it a little longer. But he was also smart enough to not push it and got Jones back in to ice it. Good job all around.

Watching Collins and Bufkin work the floor together last night was a very positive turn of events for this team. I have yet to see an opposing player match the speed of Collins and while he has been equal parts exciting/out of control for much of the season, I thought last night he was a difference-maker as Rutgers struggled to match up with him.  Very exciting to see the future of these young guys.  Hope they mature enough to get into the Tourney this year and gain that experience.
