1. Offense vs Indiana

starts at 1:00

Selling out versus loading up: when Michigan went pistol IU went balls for the wall against the run, even bringing corners to the line of scrimmage before the mesh point. All three(!) play-action passes were big gains. Something to talk about with the receivers finally, including Shoooooon. Blake Corum: still Hart but Fast, not saying Barry Sanders okay OKAY? Edwards is good not Corum good. Offensive line met resistance but didn’t give up pass-rush: that’s opponent variant. Disagreement on Barnhart.

[The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]

2. Defense vs Indiana

starts at 36:08

Hate Walt Bell offenses. Not because they’re hard to stop but because they don’t go anywhere in many plays that all come down to how much practice time to do you want to expend on Indiana? Colson might have been a coaching thing: M didn’t want to play with light boxes but wasn’t getting lined up. Seth: Cover 3 in the first half: why? Brian: they didn’t respect IU. Pass rush probably was more IU-related.

3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory

starts at 1:01:25

A new plan for accessing Star Cornelius Johnson. The refs: personally offended by cool stuff—Fox knew the face-wipe was cool because they featured it on the reel before the 2nd half. Intentional grounding is philosophically broken. Seth is also philosophically broken. Can a game-winning field goal be sad?

4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac

starts at 1:32:54

Purdue has no closer, needs to get up by 30 points to be secure. Illinois gets into an Iowa with Iowa but come out still looking like New Wisconsin. Old Wisconsin looks like they finally figured out that one receiver they targeted that one drive against us last year is actually worth throwing at. Michigan State keeps using that word “dignityI’m not sure it means what they think it means.

MUSIC:

  • “Throwing Back the Apple”—Pale Saints
  • "Nobody Dies"—Thao & The Get Down
  • "Crippling Self Doubt and a General Lack of Self-Confidence"—Courtney Barnett
  • “Across 110th Street”
THE USUAL LINKS:

“I don’t want surveillance capitalism to befall Alex.”

On Henning being in more: I know some folks who are well acquainted with him who have indicated that he has been voicing some consternation about his lack of opportunities as a true receiver. With Wilson out, I’m wondering if that factored in to his seeing the field more than Anthony. Sort of an “okay, if you think you can make something happen, let’s see it” kind of thing.

Yeah, I don't want to see Henning get more WR snaps at Anthony's cost.  AA is tall, fast, and can make dynamic catches.  While Henning is dynamic with the ball in his hands, he really isn't in Anthony's class as a WR (IMO - I don't think we've really seen enough of both to make a solid determination here).

Maybe Brian is right in that you don't want to rep AA in the slot for one game, or even 2, maybe?

I can't find the highlight but if you watch the safety right after Corum puts his jock strap on the field, he starts clapping and nodding towards Corum. "Mike Hart but fast" is so good, he has opposing players acknowledging it during the game!

Calling my shot early: he gets his wheel route in man coverage this week against Penn St

I only read the summary, but Corum isn’t Barry Sanders.  But re-watching the game I can’t think of the last Michigan back to run like that.  I kept say that’s not quite as magic as Barry Sanders.  But g*d d@mn it is reminiscent of Barry Sanders type of moves.

I can't think of another back like that either, except for maybe one that is still playing college ball.  Only he's playing for UCLA.  I watched Charbonnet, and that dude is just as spectacular as Corum is!  Had he stayed, 5* D Edwards would be the #3 back and we wouldn't know who CJ Stokes is.  ZC put a double move on a Utah LB that made my shoes pop off while I was sitting on the couch!  He had nearly 130 yds in the first half and finished with 198 on 22 carries.

This was not a game of two halves that the MGoBlog boys would have you believe.  Being at the game, I can tell you with absolute certainly, the tipping point of the game was when the stadium piped in "Pump it Up" and us in the visiting sections informed the home team, "You got to Pump it UP!".

.... also Memorial Stadium (IU ed.) has gone full Sparty.  While the stadium itself is lovely (they make up for lack of size, by selling tallboys), they fill 1/3rd of their big screens with ad-space and the PA blasts loud music up to the snap when the visiting team has the ball.  On at least one drive where Michigan started a drive back by the band, the PA played the piped-in up to the snap, then the band blasted a few bars into the play.

The guys were talking about Fox with no replays but it was the same at the stadium. I kept looking up at the scoreboard to watch the replay and nothing but a static screen. I think they showed 2 or 3 replays the whole game. Not sure if that's tied into the Fox broadcast or what but it was super annoying.

Another fun listen!  Alas, I'm to complain that Brian needs dynamic leveling on his mike.  He's back to trailing off to near silence when he finishes 'routine' sentences, or has several sentences strung together.  He's fine when excited, but he goes from blasting ear drums to barely being audible.  Granted, what he whispers isn't making or breaking the podcast, but it does get frustrating when you can't hear half of what his statement is!

I compressed it 3 times! Part of it was this week Brian's still getting over a cold, so when his voice dropped it went to almost zero. I had a hard time hearing him sometimes. We stopped a couple of times to recapture something but to get all of it I would have had to turn it up all the way to the fuzz.

FYI the motion that Harrell was doing that resulted in a penalty is called “wiping his nose”. As a slang term in contemporary rap it means to rob or kill someone, but I wouldn’t read too much into it. The term has become extremely popular in rap, and the resulting dance move of wiping your nose has become ubiquitous in rap music videos, Instagram, and TikTok. No ill will behind the gesture, just a kid emulating dance moves from his favorite rappers.

EDIT: example here for anyone that is still confused https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HR3FLTCpRZ4

At two different points in the hot takes/Sklar brothers segment, both Brian and Seth seemed to hint at this (and the highly racialized dynamic behind it) being the “true” reason Harrell was called for the penalty. But they both knew that’s a minefield of an argument, so they understandably backed off.

Re: Okie

Sometimes, sometimes, it all comes together.  He washed out of Alabama and probably wasn't engaged there, but it's not like he wasn't getting coached.  It's easy to forget we're talking about a bunch of very young twentysomethings.  Every now and then, the maturity side catches up and on occasion you get to see years of coaching and lessons all finally come together and a guy just blows up.

I really, really doubt that Okie learned everything he's applying now in "two weeks of fall camp".  More likely, all the knowledge was already there, but his maturity needed to catch up to it.

Re: Harrell

I agree with the take that NO, it's not fair, it's not right.  No, the nose-wipe is not a penalty, it shouldn't get called.  But. . . you play for Michigan.  The refs are hunting you.  Finish the play, get off the field.  If you do anything after a play, you might get flagged.  You can't say you don't know.

I really wonder why Brian insists "it's not a penalty" with this officiating.  He knows better!  B1G refs suck, they absolutely suck, but everyone knows they suck.  You can't pretend you live in a world where B1G refs don't suck.  You can't really control what your opponent does while you're trying to tackle, but you have full control over your post-whistle behavior.  So get off the field, celebrate later.  You fucking know what will happen if you hot dog around B1G refs in a Michigan uniform.

I don't agree re: Harrell.

Jehu Chesson dabbed all over the rest of the B1G in 2015 with zero flags. Blake Corum devoured an entire cob of corn at Nebraska last year and we got DPJ's legendary Paul Bunyan in 2018.  The suck part is the inconsistency of the refs; it is completely unreasonable to rip up Harrell for the flag.

I don't believe the Big Ten refs are "hunting" Michigan players at all, but still ... I'm with you (and Dave) on this. I will never understand how/why coaches don't tell the players at every practice, "don't make some stupid demonstrative and celebratory gesture after a good play!"

It's not complicated, it's not hard. Celebrate with your teammates, and get off the field, where you can do whatever you want. But how often do we see players (no, not just Wolverines) get called for stupid demonstrative nonsense. Standing over a tackled player to intimidate him. Wagging a finger after breaking up a pass. Making the first down gesture.

Personally, I don't even understand the need to make the gesture in the first place. You made the play! Let that speak for you, get back to the huddle, get on with the game. Making gestures to demonstrate how tough you are in the middle of the game, when you may well get burned the next play? Juvenile, immature, and hubristic.

I don't get it. Coaches, tell the players not to f*****g do it any more. Players, celebrate with your teammates, not by trying to ... show the fans what a badass you are.

DennisFranklinDaMan

October 10th, 2022 at 1:31 PM ^

Also, referees are (justifiably) trying to stop players from doing things that are likely to be responded to badly by their opponents. Does nobody understand that ego is involved, and emotion? If you see a player wagging his finger at you, you're likely to do the same back at him at your next opportunity, eventually leading to shoving and fights?

Sigh. Not once have I gotten excited at a specific celebration by a player. Do the Barry Sanders: toss the ball back to the referee and get off the field. We'll celebrate your great play even without a touchdown celebration, trust me. Just play the damned game.

Considering how often the coaches on the sideline break into histrionics whenever anything goes against them I have a hard time getting too worked up about celebrations.  It's an emotional game and guys are excited, and while I get not wanting someone to do something offensively aggressive toward another player being mad human beings acted with some emotion and punishing them for it seems like more an issue with the NCAA/refs than with the players.

Yeah, Okie turning into a rotation defensive lineman on a top-5 team is as much maturity and opportunity as it is the coaches teaching him technique.  He definitely looks like a guy who people sort of expected coming out of HS, and my guess is he'll continue to improve as the year progresses.

I don't think the refs are purposely going after Michigan but they are inclined to call dumb stuff because they are, in general, not great at their jobs.  We notice it when Michigan plays because we're watching but I've caught enough Big 10 games over the years to see that every team has to deal with these people messing up on the regular.  And honestly, they're the worst when one side is dominating - in this game it was the McGregor "roughing" penalty that basically happened because Michigan was getting into the backfield too quickly.  I have just come to expect the refs to call a bad game at this point and be pleasantly surprised when they don't.

October 10th, 2022 at 3:48 PM ^

Granted, not all bad calls are anti-Michigan; every team in the conference has to deal with trash.  The game after the Bolden ejection, the very same crew robbed Michigan State of their then-undefeated season on a call so horrible it boggles the mind.  (As amazingly bad as O'Neill's crew was, the one thing I didn't accuse them of was bias.  They screwed everyone.)

But yes, we have documented data of extreme officiating bias and firsthand observation that both the B1G and NCAA openly despise Michigan.  Now, I will concede that I don't know Harrell's penalty in particular was bias, or just a case of a B1G official being a piece of trash, because the incompetence adds noise to the signal.  So, fine.

Point being, B1G officials aren't merely incompetent; they're unprofessional.  There's a meaningful distinction.  An idiot can be dangerous yet innocent of malice; B1G refs are both bad at their jobs AND human sewage, almost certainly by design.  Whether it was anti-Michigan or just personal, flagging Harrell was definitely not in the same nature as judging a reception or spot.  It's a brazenly clear case of the refs imposing their prejudices on the players.  That is NOT what a ref should ever do.  But they do it, the B1G lets them do it, there's nothing anyone can do about it. . . except not give them the impetus.  I ain't say it's right.  It's just literally the only thing Harrell can do about it, to avoid hurting his team.

Interesting commentary here about Michigan approaching the level of Ohio State in the sense of separating themselves from the rest of the conference. The issue I have here is we have to take into account scheme and play-calling in interpreting this. Unfortunately, until Michigan improves further at focusing on a team's weaknesses for the whole game, they will be generally be struggling in games where they should be putting teams away.

Two years in a row, OSU has destroyed Michigan State by relentlessly attacking their weak secondary. On the other hand, Michigan stuck to its gameplan and we know the outcome last year. Granted, one could argue (as I would) that they should have won that game -- but in any case, it was a close game, and it didn't need to be. This year, I hope we see a plan more like the fourth quarter versus Indiana -- then the MSU game could be a lot less stressful.
