1. Thoughts on The Game

Starts at 1:00

It comes down to Michigan being the type of team to go for it on 4th and 1 and Ohio State is the type of team to punt on 4th and 1. This game came down to blocking and tackling, not sign stealing. Ohio State is below the Ferentz line over the last three years (and are 74% of the way to Ryan Day's 100 points). Twitter has been so much quieter since Saturday. Is this the end of the line for Ryan Day? Should it be? Also who would you even hire next? Michigan's culture was built to beat Ohio State. This program brings out the mental fortitude of the players required to endure what the last six weeks has been.

[The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]

2. Offense vs Ohio State

Starts at 36:19

Blake Corum's 22 yard run is what he came back to Michigan for, he ran duo and made Sonny Styles look silly. Trente Jones is blowing people off the line - so happy for him in this game. The Ohio State defense was as advertised, JTT is a monster of a run defender. Feels like they could've just used JJ instead of Alex Orji on the run plays out of the first half. Why didn't JJ run more? It didn't quite feel like the best game plan but it worked, also Ohio State's defense just played really well. Was the Roman Wilson touchdown throw the best throw we've ever seen a Michigan quarterback make? Playcalling on Michigan's last series wasn't great but otherwise it was great throughout the drive for draining seven minutes of clock. Cornelius Johnson didn't have the same explosive plays as last year but the catches he did have were arguably just as monumental. There's no question that Colston Loveland is going to catch the ball when the ball goes his way.

3. Hot Takes, Defense vs Ohio State

Starts at 1:18:31

Takes hotter than Ryan Day's seat. Michigan's defense did exactly what we expected, Marvin Harrison Jr said he's never been doubled like that before. Michigan did a good job containing TreVeyon Henderson, Chip Trayanum was more effective. The secondary got interesting after Will Johnson got hurt. Why was Jimmy Rolder out there? Marvin Harrison Jr made some insane catches, especially the downfield one where he was held. Ryan Day didn't want to run CJ Stroud and he doesn't want to run Kyle McCord. Surprising lack of frippery between both offenses. McCord played surprisingly well under pressure. Quinten Johnson's big hit made the Big House as loud as we've ever heard. Michigan's rotation of players all season paid off in this one.

4. Game Theory, and Special Teams

Starts at 2:08:44

Let's compare Ryan Day to James Franklin! Discussing all of Ohio State's punting situations. What about Michigan's, should they have gone for it on the final 4th and 4? Maybe it's better to let Colston Loveland win it for you than to have to defend Marvin Harrison Jr without Will Johnson. Ryan Day on 4th and 1 - WHAT ARE YOU DOING? A monster game from Tommy Doman. There were far fewer Ohio State fans in the stadium this year. Shout out to the giant Mike Sainristil head in the field rush. Roman Wilson's touchdown was absolutely a touchdown. Stadium replay - DON'T SHOW THE REPLAY IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO SHOW THE BALL. WE WERE EMOTIONALLY DISTRAUGHT. Also it was an incompletion, not a fumble.

5. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

Starts at 2:45:53

Iowa - 13
Nebraska - 10

The most Iowa win ever? They hit the game winning field goal with someone who has not kicked all year. The last ten minutes of this game was incredible. The Big Ten Championship Game should be about the same as two years ago.

Northwestern - 45
Illinois - 43

In regulation! Northwestern amazingly finishes the regular season 7-5. Bert was angry at the end.

Purdue - 35
Indiana - 31

Indiana head coach Tom Allen is fired after this game (and gets a $20 million buyout). Who does Indiana hire?

Maryland - 42
Rutgers - 24

Maryland won this in the first quarter. Tagovailoa threw some dimes and that's all she wrote. Rutgers cannot play from behind. Taulia now leads the Big Ten in all time passing yards.

Wisconsin - 28
Minnesota - 14

Hot seat time for PJ Fleck?

Penn State - 42
Michigan State - 0

Total yards were 586 to 53.

JTT may be an excellent run defender but he was invisible in terms of pass rush. I noticed one particular play where Barner had him locked up one on one. He is not a first round DE. Everyone needs to stop with that.

Speaking of Illinois from someone sending a child there and having some vested interest in their football team since my son is in their marching band.....

Bert had a terrible year.  They blew a ton of close games and he spent more time bitching to the refs before, during, and after the games then he did installing discipline in his players.  They didn't have any depth but there was some decent talent on this team and he blew it.

That being said, the refs did blow the call big time on the potential tying 2pt conversion.

Reading and watching lots of responses from Columbus and East Lansing, I was struck again by how much their local reporters are homers. They're total fanboys, gloating over wins and moaning about losses personally.

(One doofus decided he had to bitch that Michigan's field was messy after fans stormed the field.)

Perhaps it's my maize-&-blue glasses, but it seems as if reporters on Michigan sports are more neutral.

Yeah at first blush firing Day seems crazy, but the more I think about it, he doesn't really add that much. He completely lost his composure on Saturday in the 1st quarter. He's non stop yelling at the refs even when reviews go his way.

He isn't that great of a play caller when faced with equal talent. He's great at coaching the game when he has an overwhelming talent advantage, which OSU has at least 10 games a year, and any coach could do that. He gets super pass happy whenever he is down, despite the fact that I thought in 2021 and 2023 running plays were their most effective, and the best way for them to win. But he calls the game like he is playing Madden against his little cousin.

At this point he isn't adding much you couldn't get with someone else. He folds in big games and skates through all the bad Big 10 teams.

Yeah, IMHO, it's great to gloat at the Buckeye misery going 0-3 against the clearly superior, no excuses left Michigan Wolverines .... but ....

Rumors of OSU's demise, particularly in the age of the transfer portal, are greatly exaggerated. IMHO Alex (edit--ooops, Dave I guess, sorry guys) hits this squarely on the head in the podcast. OSU is one transfer portal QB away from being very, very dangerous again. AND they have the #2 recruiting class. AND their returning talent will be impressive regardless. AND they were an interception on the final drive away from scraping out a road win against arguably the finest assemblage of talent Michigan has ever mustered (and one that will likely disperse after January).

So, yeah, let's gloat and revel in this for roughly 364 days. And--let's not get cocky.

It’s a shame you cannot hear the crowd reacting to Quinten Johnson’s hit on the broadcast because all you get is Gus Johnson doing an Andrew Dice Clay “OAHHHW!!!!” at the top of his lungs.

But that’s what people want in a broadcast these days, apparently. It’s a shame Keith Jackson is still alive to have to hear what’s become of his profession.

Speaking of game theory, on Corum's last run for a first down he made a fantastic move to stay in bounds that was not mentioned at all by the announcers.  Should he have gone down before gaining the first down to give Michigan 2nd and 1 to likely give Michigan at least 4 more plays instead of 3 to force OSU time outs and/or run the clock?  It would require incredible processing power to make the judgement in real time that his most likely outcomes were a 9-yard gain or a 14-yard gain (let alone the calculation as to which is better), but my gut tells me that leaving your team in 2nd and 1 in that situation is the better play.

(In retrospect, I am not even 100% sure that Corum's move to stay in bounds actually kept the clock running.  ESPN's not completely reliable game log shows his play [a 14-yard run on 1st down] starting with 2:07 left on the clock and the next play also starting with 2:07 left on the clock).

ESPN's game log shows a time out taken just before that play, but that may be incorrect.  Either way, the question remains the same -- is it better to have 2nd and 1 from the 30 with 2 minutes remaining or 1st and 10 from the 25?

With 2nd and 1, if you fail to gain a yard (or even lose a couple of yards) after running 2 plays, you have a not insignificantly more difficult FG try after running only 2 plays. But if you convert on 2nd and 1, you earn yourself 3 more chances to run the clock and/or force TOs.  And in this case, if you fail to convert on 2nd and 1 but convert on 3rd and short, you probably run out the clock.

I like the idea of giving a very solid short yardage Michigan team a couple of short 1st down tries to burn more clock over 1st and 10, but there are plenty of good arguments for the other side.

If I recall correctly, Corum went down with like 2:11 on the clock and then Ohio State called the time out. So, if he runs out of bounds with a first down, the clock stops while they reset the chains then restarts, because the clock continues to run on out-of-bounds plays unless you are inside of 2 minutes. I could very well be wrong, but if correct, it would have been better to go out of bounds with the 1st down.

Mike Sainristil is the embodiment of Michigan football. It's the work ethic, heart, desire and unselfishness that doesn't show up on any recruiting rankings. Many have talent, few have what it takes. Hoping he passes that kind of leadership on to others.

We need to mark our calenders for October next season. You can guarantee that something comes up to give the networks something to talk about that's an off the field issue.

Jeff Brohm threw a chair against the locker room wall in his PRE-game speech to his team in his FIRST game against Michigan—a game in which a Purdue linebacker landed with his whole weight on Wilton Speight’s back, causing him to miss the rest of the season (and almost much worse since Purdue makes you drive to Chicago for medical care). I’ll pass.

I liked the point made that during Ohio’s run of dominance was when they were at the forefront of the effective offense of the time. It’s a really good point. I would argue that Michigan is now the forefront of what works on offense now. Ohio is trying to replicate Michigan. Penn State too. Got my wheels spinning with that point. Good stuff you guys

The correct 3rd and 6 play call on the last drive was the fake bubble screen release.

The defense will overreact to the bubble screen motion and fake blocks by the WR.  The WR on the outside probably has a free release, and then it's just a read of the safety and outside LB to see if the easier inside WR 'blocker' is open.  Risky, but likely also wide open at that point in the game.

As for your story about the OSU fan who complained that the Buckeyes never get calls .... I mean ... it's not like many Michigan fans don't believe that we never get the calls either. And ... we're the winningest program in college football history.

There are fans of single team that believe they never get the breaks and that the refs are out to get them. Every. Single. Team.
