Fall Roster Overanalysis 2012 Comment Count

Brian

An annual tradition. Remember: all weight changes are positive events.

This is slightly incomplete as the info sheet handed out at media day is either incomplete or the assembled numbers are—Heiko and Ace didn't get in on that sweet xerox action before they ran out. So a few players are stuck with question marks after their names for current weights. I've bolded changes or additions I find interesting.

NOTES!

Amarah Darboh is large. Jerald Robinson probably put on a few pounds but Darboh comes in as Michigan's heaviest wide receiver not converted from tight end by a good ten pounds. Hopefully he can step right into the lineup. Also, Jehu Chesson's coming in at a potentially college-ready weight.

Terry Richardson is small. A redshirt or broken tackles beckon.

WDE BEEEEFCAKE. Not a huge surprise since both entered as linebacker-sized dudes and are now being asked to take on tight ends and whatnot, but Beyer and Clark have added 59 pounds between them.

INTERIOR DL VEGANCAKE. Michigan's starting five-tech and three-tech are 278 and 276 pounds, respectively. That seems like it bodes poorly. Mattison is going to have to get very aggressive slanting those guys, because there's no way either holds up to double teams. Nate Brink is also struggling to crack 280, though he's got his injury as an excuse.

In better vegancake news, Will Campbell's halfshirt humiliation diet has him down to an extremely reasonable 308. Please be good.

Wasn't RJS supposed to be big? You could have gotten big odds that RJS would not have been the lightest incoming linebacker by 20 pounds. He's still listed at 6'2" and therefore seems like the guy best suited to be a SAM linebacker long-term (other than Bolden, but Bolden seems busy)… but it'll take a while to get there. Either I'm overestimating how big these SAMs have to be or we should be worried about the depth post Cam Gordon. Since both SAMs put on around 12 pounds to near 240, I'm choosing the latter until the 2013 edition of this post shows RJS +32 pounds or whatever.

Bryant and Miller will meet in the middle. Both head towards 300 in 20-pound increments. When they meet next year they'll hopefully be field-ready.

Willie Henry is a… at 6'2", 302 he's probably a nose tackle. No one else in the class on the DL is under 6'4" or over 270 save Pipkins, who is obviously also a nose tackle.

Chris Wormley's height. Okay, so he's listed at 6'4". Strobel is listed at 6'6". That picture I've posted a couple times does make that seem accurate. With the Godin height/weight (basically identical to Wormley) and the above bullet on Henry, we can confirm the proposed incoming DL spectrum from the Wormley recruiting post. From most NT to least NT:

  • Pipkins (NT only)
  • Henry (NT/3tech)
  • Godin (3tech)
  • Wormley (SDE/3tech)
  • Strobel (SDE)
  • Ojemudia (WDE)

Second-year corners. Are a lot less tiny.

It may not matter much, but Godin and Wormley are the same weight, but not the same height.  At 6' 6" there's a chance that Godin's too large for the interior.  You know, the Massey thing and all that

Very glad to see both Strobel and Godin coming in at that size, though.

It can depend on their frame and how their weight is distributed. Godin may be able to redshirt and pack on 30 pounds. Wormley may struggle to add 30 pounds for the rest of this career.

FWIW, I can see them both playing the DT spot inside. Not like RVB was a short guy.

I'm betting the RJS weight is an error. He was listed everywhere at 215 at the beginning of his senior year. Unless he got mono, my money is on a typo.

IMO he was going to redshirt anyway. Ryan and Gordon are the SLBs. Now maybe Mike Jones could slide over as a emergency #3 since it seems like he's going to get passed (or got passed) by Bolden.

In actuality, the realistic scenario would move Demens to SLB. Bolden would come in at MLB...OR Demens to SLB, Morgan to MLB and Hawthorne to WLB.

Either way, it sucks, but it's not the end of the world, both of those two combinations would be serviceable in an emergency. *knocking on wood*

hate to throw a wet blanket on this. I just don't see how certain undersized DLs are going to stand up the Bama OLs. I feel like Bama constraint plays are going to be very easy play actions against Mattison stacking the box. Here's hoping Denard can manage a 40 point outburst against a rebuilding defense.

The need for XL defensive linemen, particularly on the interior, is imperative. When you look at the success of teams at the highest level the defensive linemen are enormous. LSU, Bama, Auburn, and Florida all had insanely good, large defensive linemen that decimated all teams in their wake. Looking at our roster and recruited players I'm not seeing a dominant defensive line. We have freakish linebacker talent in the coming years, if we can form a dominant defensive line to match we would be unreal. To make it clear I'm not saying our current guys can't get the job done I'm just very particular in the size of D-linemen. I'd do anything for Gabe Watson or Alan branch to be reincarnated lol

Darboh.  Whoa.  You have that bolded properly.  I think he was listed at 200lbs Sr. year of high school?!  I dunno, maybe it's just the Iowa in me but I've been thinking for sometime that this kid is going to be good and one of the better recruits for this class, purely opinion of course and based on very limited evidence.  If it's a good weight gain that is definitely a plus and will help him overpower/out-body secondary players; how soon of course is unknown, but we can all hope he is field ready this Fall.

Not a shock after previous diet comments, but is anyone else concerned about Pipkins weighing in at 337? There's a lot of hope he can contribute this year, but that doesn't seem realistic at such a high weight. Without the issues, I'd be excited by Frank Clark's weight, and I'm glad to see Chesson up to 183.
