Greg Mattison Is Michigan's Defensive Coordinator Comment Count

Brian

greg mattison

our coordinators have the exact same hair. no nonsense hair.
no one will ever say their hair is the best part of them.

This seemed like a far-fetched rumor when it started buzzing but lo, it is true:

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is expected to go the University of Michigan as their new defensive coordinator, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

No deal has been formally reached, though.

He would likely be replaced in Baltimore by secondary coach Chuck Pagano.

UPDATE: Mattison has taken the job and Pagano has replaced him.

I“We’re excited for our defense and for Chuck, and we’re happy for Greg Mattison,” coach John Harbaugh said. “I will talk more about it tomorrow when we formally announced Chuck as our new coordinator in a press conference.”

Mattison is the best possible hire of all rumored names, a veteran with a history of excellent defenses in both college and the NFL. He coordinated Michigan's stout '95 and '96 defenses and can probably take some credit for the national championship-winning '97 edition. After leaving Michigan, Mattison was Notre Dame's DC for a few seasons, then moved on to be co-DC at Florida with Charlie Strong. He's been with the Ravens the last three years.

This isn't exactly hiring Gus Malzahn—Chizik was a great DC himself before becoming a head coach—but it's the closest possible thing, an indication that Michigan is no longer skimping on assistant salaries. When the above-linked article finishes "Mattison has been successful with the Ravens, so this is a bit of a surprise," you know you're dropping some coin.

Hope meter: incremented.

Also, there's an official release on much of the rest of the staff:

Hoke Announces Seven Staff Appointments

ANN ARBOR – University of Michigan head coach Brady Hoke announced today (Tuesday, Jan. 18) the hiring of seven staff members to his Wolverine coaching and support staff. Hoke named six of the nine assistant coaching positions and the appointment of his strength and conditioning coach.

Six members of the San Diego State staff joined Hoke in Ann Arbor. Al Borges will coordinate the offense and work with the quarterbacks, Dan Ferrigno will coordinate the special teams and coach the tight ends, Darrell Funk will coach the offensive line, Jeff Hecklinski mentors the wide receivers and Mark Smith has been appointed linebackers coach. Aaron Wellman also joined the Wolverines’ staff as the strength and conditioning coach.

Hoke rehired long time Michigan running backs coach Fred Jackson to the same position on the staff. Jackson will begin his 20th season as a member of the Wolverine coaching staff in 2011.

All but Ferrigno were already known, and Ferrigno was suspected. Borges is listed as QB/OC so that probably means Loeffler won't return—and that's how Michigan can afford an esoteric TE/ST coach.

Michigan still has two open assistant slots and holes at DB, DL, and QB. Since Hoke and Mattison both have extensive experience as DL coaches it's not 100% that QB is the spot that goes unfilled but it's probable. Bringing in another offensive coach would mean the staff had five offensive assistants and just two on D.

BONUS: Michigan's also hiring Hoke's director of operations, so this will probably be the first and last time you think about this name: Bob Lopez. May he be a thousand times more obscure than Draper and Labadie.

This is the biggest news since the BH hire and its as good as ANYONE could imagine.  The Ravens defense is what that team is all about.  They won a Super Bowl with essentially no offense whatsoever.

Congrats to Brady !!  Big time hire ...   For those newbies, I fully expect a huge turnaround with the D starting next fall.  But gve us 2 years of recruiting and coaching and we should be Top 10 in the country !!!   Woooooo !

Go Blue !

I'm a former corporate exec type, and one of the formal and informal learnings from that was to separate substantive criticism from the emotion behind it. Watching the evolution of that post, you were substantively right. Live and learn. Learn faster, if possible :-)

And it is great to be a Wolverine, and it does feel like Christmas to see such a dramatic indication that this will not be a return to "same old, same old". For all my reserved reception of Hoke, and criticism of DB's public messaging, both deserve a lot of credit for this hire. Go Blue!

With GM as the hire, does this mean we will see a 3-4 defense next year? I've been itching for a return to the 4-3, but if we can bring a Baltimore/Pittsburg-style attacking 3-4 I'll be happy.

Was wondering the same thing...Mattison has experience with the 3-4 and 4-3 but probably maintained the 3-4 at Baltimore mainly because it was in place with Rob Ryan and successful.

I would prefer the 3-4 and it would be outstanding if we could somehow get Washington or Campbell to play the Ngata role.

I'm not holding my breath on that happening though...

If it did:

DT: Washington / Campbell

NT: Martin

DE: Van Bergen

Rush: Roh

Will: Cam Gordon / Mike Jones

Mike: Demens

Sam: Fitzgerald

Secondary: less doom?

I'm expecting a more vanilla 4-3 though mainly because it is vanilla.

Rex was the Coordinator - his brother Rob was most recently at Cleveland and is now going to Dallas. Rex was the DC at Baltimore before getting the head job at the Jets

Also with defenses, the Nose Tackle is the one lined up directly over the center (0 or 1 gap) If we wanted a huge space-eater to do what Ngata does (who is awesome btw) we'd want Campbell/Washington at the Nose, and Martin lined up as a 3-4DE with RVB.

A 3-4 DE is very similar to a 4-3 "3 Tech" DT, where many on the board think that Martin would be most effective. for "3-Tech" think Alan Branch or (historically) Warren Sapp. Or Suh. They're all 3-techs, not nose tackles.

I agree with your sentiment though. My guess is we play mostly 4-3 because Roh is most effective with his hand on the ground.

My bad on mixing up the Ryan's.  At least I didn't say Buddy.

As for NT vs. DT, I'm aware of the difference.  Certainly you'd think Washington/Campbell would be the space-eating NT a la Vince Wilfork, Gilbert Brown, or to go a little further back and keeping it local, Jerry Ball.

That being said, I was perusing the Ravens depth chart before I made my post and they have Ngata listed as the DT which I thought was odd and is probably just a mistake but that's why I lined them up as I did.

It doesn't matter now as it looks like we will be running the 4-3 as I figured.

That leaves a few questions:

Van Bergen inside or outside?

Who wins the SAM and Will spots?

Who are the corners?  Probably Woolfolk and Floyd but Avery could/should beat out J.T.

Free safety is totally up for grabs and will Kovacs replaced?  He might platoon on passing downs if he does keep his job...

My guess is RVB moves around a lot. I'd like to see a lot of situational switching on the D-line

Roh/Martin/Cambell or Wash/RVB for your typical 1st and 10, rushing downs type thing

Roh/Martin/RVB/Black for pass rush situations

Lots of subbing, etc. throughtout the game, but I think that RVB could be effective inside or out.

And if Buddy Ryan did anything, it was good. I'm surprised they list Ngata at "DT" though, I think they tend to move him around a lot to try to get him better matchups throughtout the game on centers and guards... but who knows?

It's been very interesting to be talking so much defense after learning so much offense over the last couple years

I think the Ngata thing is just an error but when you have multiple 300 pounders it's easier to move people around...

We really need either Black to step up and force RVB inside or Campbell/Washington to step up and move Martin to the under tackle slot.  Ideally both.

When the HC search was on, I looked up Mattison's age, and thought, "Nope, too old." I'm pretty sure that if he had wanted to be a HC, he'd have been able to swing a smalltime gig after he left UM, so must be a defense lifer, which makes me happy.

Given that the last few years of UM linebacker play would have made Ray Lewis puke, even though he's not a Michigan fan, this is good.

count me surprised and completely wrong. Didn't think they'd hire someone with a recognizable name and resume. Chalk up another victory for the Carr clan...

Forward into the past!

1). Mike Martin is doing the Hawaiian War Chant this evening.

2). By the time M plays the Crimson Tide in Dallas, Will Campbell becomes a full blown beast on the DL.

Concur on the DC hire, he is a well established and respected coach whom high school kids will get excited about.  This hire will benefit our recruiting efforts.

I wonder about some of the other coaches, for example Ferrigno who has a combined recored of 128 wins and 193 losses in his coaching career.  I would prefer all of our coaches have established winning records including our head coach, the winning attitude in football is contagious.  Let's hope our expectations for greatness resume this year.  Go Blue

as we move on to finding a few defensive coaches and pound the recruiting trail. When I saw the rumor tweets on Mattison I did not believe it as for real especially after this mornings bad news. Hello Coach Mattison and glad you are coming home for all the right reasons.
