Thumbs up to the photographer on the headline pic. Great shot.

couldn't agree more

Even when I goto a game, I DVR at home because I have a better understanding of the ins-and-outs from my TV experience.

Unless I had 40 - 50 yard line seats midway up, I'd rather watch from the comfort of my home.
College Football needs to figure out how to improve the in game experience to be better than watching at home.

I like your idea of limiting televised games. Other thoughts include red zone like replays, analytical breakdowns of big plays, coaches mic'd up, and fewer timeouts.

Funny, I really enjoy his commentary

I feel like a more knowledged fan because of his insight of the game of basketball. He keeps it real and even keeled. I would go as far to say that he should be the mold of color analysts for all sports. I usually tune out broadcasters while Dakich grabs my attention because of the significant value add of his commentary. Most of the time he is spot on and is man enough to admit when he is wrong. He is #1 for college basketball in my book.

OP comments of lauging at Sparty for finishing 3rd as opposed to 2nd are the acts of a five year old and bring disgrace to our fanbase.

Not calling anyone a disgrace but do state that the OP has the argument/opinion of a typical five year old.

I agree with your satirical view of the internet but would state my opinion in face-to-face conversation if that viewpoint was brought up when discussing AP top 25.

You're disgracing this fanbase

Laughing at Sparty after they win the Rose Bowl while we don't even make the top 25?

Your entitled to your opinion, I just wish that all Michigan fans were above this and not have the mental makeup of a 5 year old.

I'm embarrassed to call myself a Michigan fan given your presence.

Value incorrectly used

I agree with previous posters on needing to further understand the split between Devin Gardner vs. Michigan QB in generating articles and mentions.

What I haven't seen mentioned yet is the calculation of $5.5mm based on marketing cost. From my read, it seems like they are saying he is worth $5.5mm because that is how much money it would take to generate the same amount of "buzz" if you hired a marketing firm. Why does this translate?

Can you show me how Devin Gardner affects ticket sales or donations? That is where the value is, not in pseudo-marketing costs.

Great stuff, couple of thoughts

Awesome read, always enjoy your work. Interesting take on measuring down-and-distance. Here are a few thoughts I had from the post:

- Agree with Jeff M that looking at color coded based on type of offense / defense would be interesting.

- I kept wanting to pull-up the top 25 / Win-Loss and see if this stuff really helps tell a story to how to win football games.

- There is a definite trend in both charts. The better you are at early conversion, the more likely you are to convert your third-down distance. I guess some teams are just better at execution.

- I keep going back to the question of how does this help me coach a football team. What about these metrics help me understand how to strategize a game. Should I go for the homerun play all the time? Does just moving the chains work better? Or are these metrics more of a rating of offenses and defenses to help us judge the performance of players and coaches. Brings me back to Jeff M's idea.

- There also seems to be a trend from third down distance and conversion percentage. That is, teams that have a lower average third down distance are more likely to convert third downs at any distance.

- I'd like to see how the big play metric plays a role here.

sorry for the crappy editing

I posted using the new mgodroid app.

Joining the constructive criticism

I think the information in this this thread is very valuable to the continued growth of the blog. I'd like to add my personal views as an avid reader for the past 8 years.

1. A lot more of the references go way above my head and I find myself reading less of the content because of it. No offense to Seth, but his style just click with me and I skip those posts. Recently, I've been yearning for some more Ace content. Some of his recent post game basketball write ups conveyed so much emotion and concrete info. The best stuff I've read anywhere in awhile. I'm talking Rick Reilly quality material.

2. I gain most of my "Michigan Intel" from reading the forum titles and rarely read through the threads (except for this one). I feel the arguments in the mgoboard are becoming less thoughtful and unsupported. Maybe due to the proliferation of 140 character tweets. If I want tweets, I'll check out twitter.

3. This blog gained my loyalty through the data driven arguments of UFR, Kenpom references, Mathlete, etc... Even though I consider myself a stat geek, I have trouble keeping up with the advanced metric references. I'm not suggesting dumbing down the posts but provide links, hover, or fine print reference to what the stats convey. I can imagine that if I'm having trouble keeping up, so are a lot of other people.

4. Brian's knowledge of the Michigan Football team including player strengths/ weaknesses and offensive / defensive strategy is huge competitive advantage over anything else out there. I highly regard Brian's opinions of the players and coaches and would love to see more content on how to best utilize are talent.

5. I love reading Brian's post during the football season from both an analytics and prose perspective. The UVs I've read less and less over the years since I rarely click through to the article and have trouble discerning the topic Brian is responding to.

6. Love the Hello: posts. The team does a great job of aggregating the info from across the web. In a rush, I skim the prospects other offers and read the fantastic summaries provided by the mgoteam.

Hope this is helpful and not to negative. Easily the best blog on the web and I find myself checking the site about once a day.

Really enjoyed the writeup

Just wanted to log in for the first time in over a year to complement Ace on the post game writeup. Great read, thanks for giving me goosebumps.

Not enough points to post...Obi Ezeh released from Redskins

To make room for former OSU LB Thaddeus Gibson.

Great post

Couldn't agree more and I couldn't have articulated it better.

My favorite MC

+1 to you if I could.

This is what I'm curious about...

Do we have enough capable LB's to make the switch to the 3-4? Can Roh be effective as OLB in this scheme?

Thanks for the posting

Denard is officially my favorite Wolverine of all time. His talent, humbleness, and leadership amazes me for someone that can't legally drink alcohol. How can you not love to cheer for this guy?

A pleasure to read

Thanks for the writeup. I really enjoyed the read and your conclusions concerning our defense. Interested to see how the defense fares this week against a more balanced attack.

You shouldn't subtract for number of games

Your formula includes punts, turnovers, and kickoffs. Your logic was to subtract the number of games since once a game you kick off to start a half. This is true but you forgot to account for the other half where you receive a kickoff. The two factors cancel each other out and you are left with punts + turnovers + kickoffs.

Thanks for the read!
