Has Hoke spoken to any of the 2011 commits?
Why was Hoke waiting until this weekend to contact our commits, not to mention prospects?
Per TomVH tweet, Hoke was apparently planning to call our commits this weekend. Apparently Tabb tried to reach Singletary but could not reach him.
I am warming to the Hoke hire, but cripes, Brandon really tied a hand behind Hoke's recruiting back with waiting until last wednesday to hire him, but that doesnt mean that Hoke should double down on cementing the destruction by letting these recruits flap in the wind.
Shouldnt these commits - who have been waiting to hear from Hoke have been contacted immediately?

TomVH said in a tweet that Beyer was expecting a call today.
Since Beyer was one of the more "sure thing" prospects, I'm sure he has talked to some of the more iffy ones already.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:12 PM ^
and in fact it was that Beyer tweet that got me thinking about it.

I think he waited a few days because of a desire to have his staff in place. It doesn't really make sense to call guys without being able to talk about their position coaches.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
Its probably hard for him to talk to our "commits" right now considering seven of them are on visits to other schools as we speak. And Trudo<a RR target commited to Syracuse today.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:29 PM ^
I'm sure he talked to some yesterday, when they weren't on official visits. I don't blame any of them for having a backup plan.
Also, Trudo was a Syracuse lock all the way. He never seriously considered us.
In conclusion, the sky is not falling.

Nail down the staff this week, 2 weeks to retain the ~14 commits..
January 16th, 2011 at 10:20 AM ^
i got a text from kellen jones' dad that hoke hadn't called as of Friday. Thought it was kind of strange that once the dead period ended he didn't call them right away, must be that the staff isn't in place.
January 16th, 2011 at 2:55 PM ^
before he picks up the friggin phone. If I was committed and hadn't heard from the new coach for at least 5 days since he was announced and there was three weeks left until NSD you can bet I'd be gone. Its not like other coaches aren't calling these kids and asking them if they think Hoke really wants them since their phone hasn't rang.

...of a head coach, the recruiting period also relies on the unspoken assumption of "Its better to take action than to be careful to get it right" (that's why every program fired their coach before Michigan, and all but Pittsburgh had their new head coach in place before Michigan, I can guarantee you they were also calling recruits before they had their staffs in place...because recruiting is just that important).
January 15th, 2011 at 11:09 PM ^
It's going to be ok. He's spoken with several of the commits (Jack Miller, Blake Countess, to name a few) and I can only assume conversations with the rest are on their way
January 15th, 2011 at 11:14 PM ^
Also Fisher?
January 15th, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
Rivals has a piece that says Countess talked to Hoke

lot more buzz out there and a lot more urgency to contact them given the timing of everything.
January 16th, 2011 at 8:01 AM ^
You can't assume that nothing is happening just because we don't hear about it and just because we hear "something" doesn't mean its happening. Relax, let him put his staff together.

Tennessee went throuh a very similar process and timeline last year. All the fans were complaining about being in the dark about recruiting after Dooley was on the job for a couple days. Dooley later indicated he took about a week to evaluate non-committed prospects to be sure they are who he wanted. It took a week or so but they closed strong in recruiting with a non-big name coaching change.
Its hard to be patient but I expect Hoke to add some big names before signing day.
January 16th, 2011 at 3:04 PM ^
...NIck "Biggest Slime in College Football" Saban, so we can assume he had the advantage of knowing how to cheat...
January 16th, 2011 at 12:10 AM ^
That coach Hoke would have the common decency to post an update immediately after each conversation with a recruit right here on Mgoblog.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:11 PM ^
Hoke might not know much about these guys and has to watch films and read up on each of them.
He has to do that, plus get to know the entire Michigan team and determine his coaching staff.
I would hope, after the dead period, that he reached out to each one briefly, but gave them a call again after he read up/watched film on each one.
January 16th, 2011 at 12:10 AM ^
I won't link the story because it was in the freep and last time I tried to link I failed miserably, but they did a story with Lemming a couple days ago that stated Hoke would honor our 12 verbals. I doubt he said he would honor them and is still watching film to determine whether he should follow through with that promise. With the things you mentioned like filling out the coaching staff, meet and greets, PR stuff, evaluating non-committed prospects and trying to get the family settled in, his days have surely been short. Then again, maybe mick mccabe is full of it, real possibility.
January 16th, 2011 at 1:08 AM ^
I don't see why he wouldn't watch film on all of the commits, even if he is going to honor their commitments. He needs to know what those players have to offer so that he can recruit the appropriate players in addition to them. In other words, he needs to know what their skill sets are so that he doesn't spend time recruiting redundant players from the pool of non-committed players.
January 16th, 2011 at 12:34 PM ^
January 16th, 2011 at 9:42 AM ^
While honoring all verbals, Hoke would tell the kids if he doesn't think they fit into his plans (if you want to play, go somewhere else).
January 15th, 2011 at 11:11 PM ^
Nah he probably doesn't give a crap about recruits.
/s
January 15th, 2011 at 11:25 PM ^
He's waiting to tap into the free agent market obviously.
January 16th, 2011 at 12:14 AM ^
recruiting should be the least of his worries - athletes are a dime a dozen
January 15th, 2011 at 11:11 PM ^
People were also saying that Fred Jackson was recruiting, since he's the link between the regimes.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:21 PM ^
Singletary remained recruiting coordinator throughout the exchange, and I'm sure he called everyone to keep them updated as well. It's not like they've been completely out of contact with us since RR was fired.
January 16th, 2011 at 12:56 AM ^
I doubt Singletary called anyone b/c it would use up the one call per week (so Hoke couldn't call).
January 16th, 2011 at 1:44 AM ^
I was talking about the week when we were coachless.
January 16th, 2011 at 2:06 AM ^
Let me clarify: he may have called immediately after the firing up until Sunday, but he didn't call after Sunday of the week Hoke was announced b/c he didn't want to use up the new coaches call. (Call count reset on Sunday.)
It only matters b/c the calls reset tomorrow, so if Hoke didn't call today or earlier this week they effectively lost their weekly call. There's no reason not to call a recruit every week and at least leave a message for them to call you back.
I'm not staying Hoke didn't call this week - I'm just saying Singletary didn't call.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:12 PM ^
Could be that's he's calling recruits, but one would think his first priority is filling out the coaching staff first..
January 15th, 2011 at 11:13 PM ^
The coaching staff should be completed before too long
January 15th, 2011 at 11:19 PM ^
Hoke must be one busy man. Keeping current players, building a staff, contacting recruits. Then again he has a lot of work ahead of him, football teams don't rebuild themselves.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
January 15th, 2011 at 11:26 PM ^
And interviews. All after spending his first day making all of his first appearances at the press conference, basketball game. This job is not for the faint of heart.
January 16th, 2011 at 12:26 AM ^
And there's that little business of buying a home and moving into it.
January 16th, 2011 at 1:01 AM ^
I completely forgot about that... I guess I was focusing on just the job aspect. But yeah that can't be too fun either.
January 16th, 2011 at 7:51 AM ^
I hear RR has a place fit for a coach in the AA area that is on the market
January 16th, 2011 at 12:38 AM ^
that some staffer or administrative assistant wrote that with Hoke's input/instruction on what to say.
January 16th, 2011 at 10:45 AM ^
it's about the players.
Kinda like running a pizza company and saying that it isn't about the customers. It's about the employees.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:24 PM ^
Herding cats..
January 15th, 2011 at 11:57 PM ^
So he should have plenty of time and energy.
January 16th, 2011 at 1:21 AM ^
How much rebuilding is required? We have a pretty competitive, young team. It seems like he is inheriting a reasonable level of talent and a lot of experience, all of which his successor left. He doesn't need to rebuild anything per se; he needs to utilize the assets accordingly and ensurethat the athletes' maturation progresses accordingly.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:19 PM ^
repeatedly that Hoke is a pretty relentless recruiter. It would be out of character for Brady to all of a sudden go into do-nothing mode. If anything, I would expect him to charge out of the blocks at warp speed (mixing metaphors I know) now that he's at his Dream Job.
January 15th, 2011 at 11:59 PM ^
I have a feeling he's going to be a fantastic recruiter at Michigan.
January 16th, 2011 at 12:02 AM ^
That he had been leading for a kicker from Cali, highly rated but not committed yet?
January 16th, 2011 at 10:16 AM ^
January 15th, 2011 at 11:19 PM ^
The recruiting dead period just ended, so Friday the 14th was the first time he could contact recruits.
