Uncomfortable situation at the basketball game
Had an interesting experience at the basketball game this afternoon and felt like I needed to share. I was sitting in the gold section near the rafters next to the loudest, most annoying clapper in the world.
After every Purdue basket, this pudgy, middle-aged guy would hammer his hands together, fist pump to the sky and scream out all kinds of things (as if the players could hear him). He screamed for the entire first half.
When he went to purchase 11 hot dogs at half time, I couldn't help but notice a massive Purdue ring on his hand 9from what I don't know) His kids were wearing Robbie Hummel jerseys. Even wifey and grandma had bedazzled Hummel shirts on.
Either this was the Robbie Hummel fan club, or Robbie Hummel's family. That's fine. Except the annoyance continued in the second half. He started screaming at Beilein, then began calling Darius Morris a "hot dog" every time he touched the ball.
Every time Michigan got a foul he would yell "they haven't broken anyone's nose yet!"
At this point I just started glaring at him. This seemed to make him even more energetic. I really wanted to get up out of my seat and punch him in the face, but he was with his kids, or someone's kids, and there were families all around. So I just kept quiet.
At the end of the game when I put on my coat and headed for the stairs his kids started taunting me! Swear to god, I was getting heckled by a god damn 10-year-old in a Robbie Hummel jersey.
It took me everything it could to not push him down the stairs (the dad or the 10-year-old). I suppose I was hoping a long-haired, bearded Michigan blogger would swoop down from the rafters and save the day. Sadly, Brian never came. And the only memories I have of today's game involve hot dogs and Chris Kramer's nose.

Again, proof of your personal attacks. You aren't any better than the rest of us. If you're going to level personal attacks, be ready to have them thrown right back at you. If you want to cry about it, be my guest.

i was driving home when i got the emails that my comments had been deleted. i pointed out rather plainly you had gotten into the name-calling and rudeness whereas i merely pointed out the same that's being pointed out by another poster: you always have to defend the greatness of your student section (as if it could never have been better before you and your fellow students), you constantly mention going to purdue, you wear your GSI status on your sleeve and you post the same Fail pics, sometimes 10 times in a row, to gain points. where is there a lie? you can go into your posting history and see it's true.
and i would hardly call anyone who negged you my butt buddy. half of those people have called me out on my shit. the difference is i've actually acknowledged truth in what people have ripped me for and worked on it (i.e. being too sarcastic, shitty).
i haven't said one personal or rude thing in this.

I called out a double standard that exists towards non m undergrad alums that is present on this site.
??? Does anyone on this site have a clue whether someone went to Michigan or not? [Scours Michigan undergrad yearbook] - Dear Lord, I don't see anyone named "Wolverine318" anywhere! He's an impostor!

After reading the topic I thought you were going to say RichRod and David Brandon were given seats near each other.

And one of our fans were doing the same thing, the board would be giving him a medal. Doesn't sound like he was profane from your description. So put the hate in a back pocket of your mind and save it for when we're good again.

The 10 year old hurt your feelings, huh?
December 28th, 2010 at 7:03 PM ^
and suggest that not pushing a kid down the steps at Crisler was a good idea. You got that part exactly right.

Probably should have told the kid that Santa isn't real

Especially with the "GetTapZooChristmas" ad right below it on the App.

You know what! There is no Easter Bunny. Over there, that's just a guy in a suit
December 28th, 2010 at 7:16 PM ^
You picked a dangerous mall to host a game show in. I hear the Easter Bunny was accosted this morning.

I'm just going to go ahead and guess that you've never pushed a ten year old kid down a flight of stairs. It definitely beats the mild satisfaction of knowing you are a decent human being.

I've only ever mentioned hypothetical child-fan beatings. Law school taught me better than to admit that shit all over the internets.

Better yet, a monster pos-bang. Max Cannon, the author of the cartoon strip Red Meat, would be so proud.

said, "Is you dad always an @sshole?" in front of the dad. I have done that several times before and it leaves everyone speechless.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:13 PM ^
Should have leaned over and whispered in the kids ear that you were his father.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:13 PM ^
I loved when you caught that TD against Virginia. That was the first game I went to.

Well, in an unrelated-ish story, Mario Manningham talked smack to me and the guys around me on Sunday at Lambeau after his long touchdown catch/run while I was sitting in the first row behind the end zone. That guy has some mouth on him. No one turned the other cheek though, and some guy a couple seats down threw his cup of soda and ice at him. In the long run, I think that makes for a better story than turning away and taking the "classy" approach, because how many can say they got in a shouting match with an old Michigan great/a pro football player? On the other hand, Manningham isn't a 10 year old boy, either.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:19 PM ^
The worst thing you can do is give an opposing fan the satisfaction that he got on your nerves...you conducted yourself like a true Michigan fan, with class.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:23 PM ^
We lose, you're a sore loser. We win, you're rubbing their nose in it. You gave the kid a shining example of how class acts behave. Acting in true Michigan Spirit requires that you not stoop to their level. I say Bravo! and hold your head high.

I would have just handed the kids candy (good candy, none of the generic stuff you inevitably wind up with on Halloween from the houses that just leave the bucket outside the front door so they can avoid the eleven seconds it would take to have real human interaction) and promised them more in my windowless van. Then, I would talk to them about Dora the Explorer or whatever's popular nowadays to gain their trust. Afterward, I would only need to...you know what, nevermind. You probably handled it better.

I thought all kids preferred a bag full of pennies?
December 28th, 2010 at 11:46 PM ^
Only if you have some 50-cent rolls for them to fill up with the pennies.

obviously the only course of action is wait 10 years till the kid is an adult, then kick his ass

I could hear the same guy behind me the whole game. His comments weren't that bad. Most comments were very old, overused and unoriginal. Just wait until next year when Purdue loses both JJ and Moore. The same guy will be keeping his mouth shut.

December 29th, 2010 at 12:31 AM ^
We played terrible, and the Purdue fans were horribly annoying. Crisler crowd was the loudest of the year (still pretty tame though).
December 29th, 2010 at 10:27 AM ^
This is the first year since 2005 that I haven't had season tickets, so I was up in the Gold yesterday for the first time since the 2005-06 season. I thought the atmosphere was on par with 05-06, which was easily the most racuous season I've been at Crisler (save the Duke game). When we started to struggle the crowd got loud to support the team and when we made that run it was pretty electric. Unfortunately, it's tough to have a great atmosphere with a second half like the one we saw...
