Projected Size of New Scoreboards
So David Brandon said that we might have new scoreboards next year. (http://detnews.com/article/20101212/SPORTS0201/12120344/1131/rss17) According to his statements, the new scoreboards he envisions will be "30-40% larger" and the "vast majority" of them would be the HD video screen.
Wondering what this would look like, I decided to do a little research. According to the University, the current scoreboards are 48' x 70' (3360 square feet), with 24' x 32' video screens (768 square feet.) (http://bentley.umich.edu/athdept/stadium/stadtext/stad1998.htm)
I did some calculations based on the "40% bigger" number, and came up with the size of the new scoreboards to be 47' x 92' (4368 square feet.) This is a pretty massive increase in size, especially considering that nearly all of that would be an HD video screen. Basically, picture an HD screen as big as the current scoreboards plus 1,000 additional square feet... The increase in size from our current video screens to the new ones would be 568%.
My projection puts us at #7 on the list of scoreboards by size. Texas is still almost twice as big as that. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_scoreboards_in_NCAA_colleg…)
Here's hoping.

Your avatar is fitting given your math skillz.

That must be some of that "fuzzy math."

I am pretty sure we can afford the screens, but how are we going to afford 110,000 pairs of 3D goggles?

Didn't you hear, each PSD went up $150 this year?
December 14th, 2010 at 2:32 PM ^
Arby's will sponsor them.
December 14th, 2010 at 2:34 PM ^
We should compare your estimated sizes to that of some other screen in college football. Auburn comes to mind for having a state of the art big screen. OU has some big screens as well.
If UM gets these screens in I will definitely go to a game next year. Right now I'm thinking maybe the NE game.

My projection puts us at #7 on the list, just in front of Florida. Texas is still almost twice as big as that.

Interestingly enough, Florida used to have a scoreboard similar to Michigan's:
They turned it into this:
They have this at the other end, but don't really use the whole thing for video:
December 14th, 2010 at 3:03 PM ^
im sure they use the whole thing for replays. but everyone enjoys their stats and such
December 14th, 2010 at 3:58 PM ^
im sure they use the whole thing for replays. but Michigan's Bank Account enjoys their Advertisements and such.
FTFY.
December 14th, 2010 at 4:08 PM ^
Dave Brandon said in this same interview that advertisements will not be made part of the football experience. Other sports (like hockey) already host advertising and will continue to be fair game even when held at the Big House, but football is staying ad-free.

Aren't you the one who made the projection of how the scoreboards would look given DB's specifications in another thread? That was also great. I think you should be dubbed "Purveyor of all things Scoreboard-related." I guess I just did. Deal with it.
EDIT: Just saw below that you were indeed the person who did that. Glad you posted that here, too.
December 14th, 2010 at 3:02 PM ^
...not big enough.

You know what the awesome thing about that link is? The last entry on the list, and the first entry in the notes section.
I don't know how big it is, but the first HD Screen I ever saw was at a Rockies game and that thing sure was purty (almost as nice as the fantastic scenery to the west!)

Can't remember the last time we were so excited to be #7. We are mostly jumping over boards that were installed many years ago. I would have thought we would at least have the largest boards in the conference on the day they were installed. And we will fall further down the list as others upgrade their boards. I would rather DB keep one existing board and install something mega-size on one end. Then, again, maybe I need to accept that we really are turning into ND. This year they were ecstatic they beat Army. Errrr -- go blue?
December 14th, 2010 at 2:42 PM ^
It needs to be bigger than Texas' "GodzillaTron."
I'm just saying.

Now that's a tv! Holy longhorn (instead of cow, haha get it?, I know dumb, I'll just get back to work for a minute or two).
December 14th, 2010 at 2:45 PM ^
Texas only has the one over the open endzone. Sounds like they're talking about keeping two at Michigan.

MGoBoard NCAA '12 tournament once the new scoreboards go in.

Texas is compensating for something?

If your unofficial state motto is "Everything is Bigger in Texas", then yes, you are compensating for something.

I want to hook up my Xbox 360 to that giant tron, sit at midfield, and play me some Modern Warfare.
December 14th, 2010 at 5:14 PM ^
maintenance guys have figured out a way to hook up a XB360 to this and play games on it during the offseason?
December 14th, 2010 at 2:45 PM ^
Texas - 7,370 square feet
Mississippi State - 111' x 47' - 5,217 square feet
Minnesota - 108' x 48' - 5,184 square feet
Oregon - 88' x 56' - 4,928-square-foot

From a reliable source that it was gonna be this big:

Already did, but it was awhile ago:

I just doublechecked your math and got roughly the same results.
December 14th, 2010 at 2:57 PM ^
but we will have two. Thus a greater total square footage.
December 14th, 2010 at 5:25 PM ^
Now all I need to do is learn to train my eyes to be able to watch both at the same time.
December 14th, 2010 at 3:07 PM ^
Whatever they do, I hope they frame it in brick or something. I think that would look cool.
FWIW, the Washington Nationals scoreboard is 47x102, very close to what you think Michigan's will be:
December 14th, 2010 at 3:14 PM ^
What's the benefit of a bigger scoreboard? So that one day Biggie Bagel can race Cuppie Coffee in HD?
December 14th, 2010 at 3:50 PM ^
Calcs above = 47' x 92'
Soldier Field LED (Wikipedia) = 23' x 82'
SWEET...................
December 14th, 2010 at 4:03 PM ^
I hope they include the rushing, passing, and total yards on the new ones too
December 14th, 2010 at 4:15 PM ^
If they extended the video screen down and didn't have the small scoreboard it would be better. Then put the teams and their scores, team with the ball, quarter, down, to go, ball on, and time outs left on the left side. Then put time left and rushing, passing, total on the right to replace the advertisements.
