26 weeks 1 day ago so...

"it is not a particularly hard accomplishment to finish with a good gpa and not be a completely shitty football fan while attending school."

So...this right here is where you're assuming everybody else has the same titanic capabilities as yourself. I'm glad college was so easy for you, but I remember working my ass off and still only got mediocre grades. I guess I just wasn't as smart as you.

(that last line isn't supposed to be a sarcastic stinger or anything. I really mean it.)

26 weeks 1 day ago god damnit

I'm a dumbass. I meant it for the other guy. The really pretenious one claiming that anybody who chose academics over football was essentially a nazi.

Sorry, Mexile. Are we still cool?

26 weeks 1 day ago You want me to fetch a stool...

...so you can climb down off that high horse?

27 weeks 4 days ago Allow me to speak for the whole marching band when I say

that "I think exactly at gametime would be a reasonable cutoff" is not a good answer.

Double post fail

1 year 25 weeks ago Just like, my opinion, man

I kind of like it better. I mean, I as always wondering why their helmets were so dull--when I think gold I think shiny, not a sort of deep mustard yellow/brown.

1 year 25 weeks ago I endorse this

There should be a thread dedicated to the hilariously pained expressions Kelly makes on the sideline whenever ND fails to execute.

1 year 27 weeks ago At first I was

At first I was like: ಠ_ಠ

But then: I lol'd.

1 year 37 weeks ago To be fair to the band...

If they're playing to the east, it is really only because that is the direction that the band--as a whole--is facing. They've been in those seats for at least five years now.

1 year 38 weeks ago We will never be sick of it,

We will never be sick of it, Brian.

1 year 49 weeks ago You've doomed us all.

"being a guy, i dont really care about fashion, so they could play in pink tutus for all i care"

Adidas is totally going to call this bluff.  FFFFFFFUUUUUUUU--

1 year 49 weeks ago I think you're confusing "ethos" with "ethics"

Ethos: The characteristic spirit of a culture, era, or community as seen in its beliefs and aspirations

Ethics: Moral principles that govern a person's or group's behavior.

Apple certainly have  characterstic culture--namely a Jobsocracy--and a very distinctive design and use aspirations in their products.  You can take pretty much any product they make and say "gloss black, brushed aluminum, stark whites and blacks?  Yep, that's apple."

That Steve Jobs is sort of a huge tool who wants every cent you've ever made and will lie, cheat and treat the consumer as an idiot doesn't change that the guy has a pretty distincive vision.

1 year 51 weeks ago Point/Counterpoint

Point:

"This program, as much as I love it, IS NOT bigger than an indivial's life."

Counterpoint:

"No man is more important than the Team.  No coach is more important than the Team.  The Team, the Team, the Team."

1 year 51 weeks ago I suppose you're right.

I guess I'm holding Mallett to an unfair standard.  I mean, I understand why he left.  he's the perfected incarnation of the pocket passer archetype and under RR he wouldn't get to show that.   And I get that a guy of his talent wants to make it to the NFL so he can earn an impossibly large amount of money.  I can understand it, I just can't respect it.

I guess my biggest error here is wishing every person who ever played college football could be held to Denard Robinson's standard.  That they go to a school they love because they love it, and  not because they see it as the vehicle to advance their careers.

1 year 51 weeks ago Well, to be fair...

I hate pretty much every person/object/idea in the known universe with the fiery intensity of a thousand burning suns right now**, so maybe my contempt for Mallett is only slighty higher than the base hatred.

Still, it's hard to have a lot of respect for a guy bailing on his team when a new coach comes into town, especially when holding him against the paragon of virtue, goodness and speed we currently have in Robinson.

**exceptions include cake (food), Cake (band), my bass guitar, and Denard Robinson.

1 year 51 weeks ago Wait, what?

"Ryan Mallett did nothing to me"?

Ryan Mallet bugging the hell out of AA was the reason we had a no QB and had to try and win games with Threet/Sheridamnit.  You can lay a large part of Michigan's agony in 08 on the compete and utter lack of a quarterback brought about by his departure.

No, my friend, my hatred for Ryan Mallet rages through me with the fiery intesity of a thousand burning suns.

2 years 5 days ago Gentlemen

We all know there Is but one drink for a man or woman out on the town in Ann arbor or anywhere else in this universe: the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster.

2 years 2 weeks ago Fun Fact:

Wings have actually out hit the sharks in most games of the series.

2 years 3 weeks ago Well, what do you want me to say?

There isn't a single measure of women's disempowerment in sports.  Am I supposed to bring out a chart and say "when we cross THIS LINE things are equal"?

2 years 3 weeks ago Amen.

I played for UM's rugby team and it seemed most the people there were more concerned with getting drunk and acting foolish than anything else.

2 years 4 weeks ago Way to miss the point.

Anyways, the problem with this sort of essentialism

Is that while sure, men tend to have greater muscle mass than women that doesn't mean they are inherently better at sports.  And because people have decided "Oh, men are better at sports" they soon reach the conclusion "Well, would women want play sports if they can't do it as well as men."

This is compounded by the fact that in sports where women would do very well, they are often not allowed to compete.  Ski Jumping is the classic example.  Women tend on average to outperform men in ski jumping (because they tend to be lighter)  There is no women's ski jumping in the Olympics despite several countries' ski clubs asking for it.  The Olympic committe claims it's due to lack of competetiveness...but considering how women's ice hockey has been a 2 team show since its inception that's kind of hard to justify.

Ed: After thinking about it a bit more, I've realized that claim is bull because it's entirely besides the point.  Even if women were as weak as kittens and slow as snails, they STILL DESERVE the priviledge of representing their university/city/country/ect in competition.  They also deserve to be treated just as well as the men.  Do you think that female athletes work less hard than their male counterpoints?  They should get the same priviledges as reward for their effort.

2 years 4 weeks ago I'd say it could be repealed

I'd say it could be repealed when female athletes are given the same respect (and pay) as their male counterparts.

2 years 4 weeks ago To be fair...

That's a fairly standard thing with modern news media:  hype and outrage at first but if corrections need to be made they're utterly buried.  It's endemic to pretty much every venue--newspaper, magazine, and television.

I mean, do you remember that Fox News  Se"Xbox" thing where a bunch of talking heads tried to say Mass Effect was Super Erotic Space Porn?  I don't remember hearing about any apology or correction.  It might have existed, but it wasn't any where near as publicized.

(That is not to say the two stories are equivelent in scope or in harm, simply as an illustration of my point.)

2 years 4 weeks ago That's kind of my point:

They don't compete in them.     Why do they not compete in women's sports?

If a country is so poor that they can not send 11 women to Olympic or WC qualifying, how can they afford to send a men's team?

2 years 4 weeks ago if my degree were in philosophy...

I'd quote some famous philosopher on "the greater good."  Alas, it's not.

Also, I'm not sure I really want to go down this particularly deep rabbit hole about social justice and maximizing happiness in the world on a sports blog.  Even one so intellecual as this.  :)

2 years 4 weeks ago Somehow...

I really doubt that the guys who practice with the women's team are there for the women's benefit, but are rather using the women's team as a sort of development program.

Ed: I guess I was being too cynical.  My bad.

2 years 4 weeks ago Were it only in my power

I would + OVER 9000!!!! you for this post.

2 years 4 weeks ago Because then we'd be asking...

Q: "Why are there so few women on the co-ed teams?"

And then people would justify it by saying things like "Women are just not as good at sports as men**, so therefore any team that wants to compete has to have as few women as possible."

**bull, but pervasive in sports culture.

2 years 4 weeks ago seconded

It's really easy to say "OMG TItle IX hurts mens sports AHHHH!" but let's be honest here: the benefits Title IX confers to women who  want to compete is VASTLY greater than the detriment to men.

The u.s is a world power in women's sports, and especially in soccer and  ice hockey.  That's evidence of title IXs effect on u.s women's sports.

2 years 4 weeks ago My goodness!

Giving legal adults the ability to choose how to spend their time, what food they eat, and where they want to sleep?

What, are we going to be asking them to VOTE next?
