Official Big Ten Logo/Divisions Reaction Thread.
(Ed-I fail at internets. The links go to the images supplied by the Michigan Football twitter account.)
My thoughts: Meh.
I liked the hidden 11 in the old logo, and hoped there would be one in this, but it's not terrible.
The second logo, a horizontal shortening, is awful and needs to be destroyed.
Your thoughts?

THANK GOD we have something to discuss other than... well. We won't go there, but the "CC" threads give it away.

Wow! Almost as riveting as LeBron’s "Decision" special. In a way, I was hoping to hear that, in selecting a new logo, they’d considered the importance of the future, so they’d simply copied the Star Trek logo, and in respecting the past, they’d decided to name the divisions for the Prince of Wales and Clarence Campbell. I suppose Leaders and Legends will have to do until enough teams are added to allow for geographical divisions or Shirts and Skins.
Not impressed with either the logos or the division names, and somewhat confused by the rationale for all the trophy names. Agree that naming the divisions posed several problems. Bo and Woody divisions might’ve brought derision for the "Toy Story Conference". But hyphenated awards/trophies? (Will the Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year award be restricted to players with common surnames? Will they present the Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year award outside Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger on the hottest day of the summer?)
Would any of those people honored with the hyphenated awards have seemed less legendary if their names were left off the annual awards? True, Bo and Woody may remain mear the top of the list of Big Ten coaching legends, but won’t there be other legendary Big Ten football coaches whose achievements may rival those of Bo and Woody? Wouldn’t it be sufficient for the top coach each year to receive the Big Ten Coach of the Year Trophy (brought to you by Meijer), and the top player to receive the Big Ten Player of the Year Trophy (presented by Google). (Does anyone get the Dunder-Mifflin Cup?)
Next time around (like maybe starting later this afternoon), consider a logo-design competition among the graphic designers at each member institution, with entries to be submitted to the judges anonymously – concluding with one entry from each member institution. If the university presidents and athletic directors have to be the judges, then so be it. The designer of the winning entry gets lifetime free admission to Big Ten championship events in every sport. That could be accomplished without having to pay a design fee to an international firm whose partners are sitting back at their office now, laughing at Jim Delany. Pentagram? Shouldn't Holmes and Watson be called in to investigate this?

Why, exactly, did the conference rule out the possibility of geographical names? East and West make complete sense and are way less lame than the ones they came up with. I'm already cringing at the thought of us having to carve "Legends Division Champions" into the pillar at the stadium.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:31 PM ^
We'll have to carve it in multiple times too, not just for football. Gah.
December 13th, 2010 at 5:10 PM ^
I think they only apply for football.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:59 PM ^
they would go with "Divisional Champions" instead
December 13th, 2010 at 3:28 PM ^
You mean this wasn't a joke?
December 13th, 2010 at 3:39 PM ^
I'm not getting why everyone is so mad about the division names. They may be bad but they're just names.
December 13th, 2010 at 5:20 PM ^
Ask your friends from SEC/Pac 10/Big 12 schools what they think of the names and then see if you still aren't mad about how bad they are.

The logo freakin sucks, and I'm still annoyed that they just jumbled up the teams into divisions that make no sense.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:18 PM ^
The "Legends" is already taken- by the Lpga Senior Tour. No kidding, please sue the Big Ten now.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:40 PM ^
Kudos to the marking staff of the Big Ten. Who would've thought the unveiling of the new logo and division names would create such a buzz for the Big Ten?
December 13th, 2010 at 4:51 PM ^
My 16 year old just got home from school and I showed the logo to him. "That sucks" was his response.
December 13th, 2010 at 4:59 PM ^
Cant stand it. I think the logo sucks, the division names suck, and the trophy names suck

Don't jump my shit if this has been posted/discussed already, but...
http://pentagram.com/en/new/2010/12/new-work-big-ten-conference-1.php
"The Big Ten Conference is the U.S.’ oldest and largest Division I college athletic association. Founded in 1896, the conference is comprised of schools located mainly in the Midwest and includes world-class academic institutions such as Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue, Northwestern, and University of Wisconsin–Madison."
Yeah...they seemed to have forgotten a certain school...and called MSU a "world-class academic institution." Also....
Pentagram’s Michael Gericke (a graduate of the University of Wisconsin) and Michael Bierut (husband of 30 years to an Ohio State alumna) have designed the new logo for the conference, announced today.
That probably explains the omission. And certainly explains the bad logo.

I found this on the ESPN article:
Asked if Leaders and Legends was too bland, or not unique to the Big Ten, Delany responded, "All of these things will engender discussion. We want to engage our fans. . ."
We fell right into Delany's trap!
December 13th, 2010 at 6:01 PM ^
That logo is just plain ugly. I hope no one got paid to make it.
December 13th, 2010 at 6:06 PM ^
See my post above. I'm sure there was ample money involved.
December 13th, 2010 at 6:10 PM ^
Michigan = legends, osu = leaders ?
December 13th, 2010 at 6:17 PM ^
It will take some getting use to.
December 13th, 2010 at 6:38 PM ^
Just hope they didn't pay too much for that logo design, though I fear they did.
December 13th, 2010 at 7:02 PM ^
I heard someone over on BSPN mention that the Pac10s new conference names will be Bro & Dude.
December 13th, 2010 at 7:36 PM ^
Does the second logo remind anyone else of the new Gatorade G/G2 logos?
Maybe it's just because it has a "G" in it???

I think that the division names are an embarrassment, but I think I know where they were going with them. They are also used to keep the UM-OSU Connection.
Leaders: Obviously from The Victors.
Legends: Every time out at OSU, they had "Legends of the Shoe" commercials with their former great players highlighted. They also released bobbleheads titled Legends of the Shoe.
To further the animosity, they put UM in the Division with the name patterned after OSU, and OSU in the Division Patterned after UM.
December 25th, 2010 at 4:02 PM ^
Can you attain legendary status in the Leaders division? I'm torn...
