Jim Rome on RR at the Banquet
Basically just revised what happened last night and added himself to the list of Rodriguez blasters. The one good point he made was that no recruit worth his salt is going to want to come play for a coach going through all this. It is definitely hard to look at the success of a Saban/Chizik type coach and team and not have faith that they will succeed.
I guess the good news is that if Rich is here, next year he'll build upon our 7-5 record and if it is someone else, we'll have a whole new reason to recruit.

Rich Rodriguez has had three brutal years at Michigan. Ever since stepping foot on campus, he’s been dogged for what he’s not; a Michigan man. And for what he is; 15-21 overall and 0-3 vs. Ohio St. But nothing has been as painful or embarrassing as last night’s annual banquet. To be fair, I wasn’t there, but I wish I were because this is just too good to be true. While talking about the crushing expectations and pressure of the season, Rodriguez choked up and admitted he’s gone to the iPod for inspiration and to help him cope. Understandable, in trying times, many of us have bumped tunes to help get us through it or take our minds off what we’re dealing with it. But the music is supposed to make it better not worse, and Rodriguez reached for…Josh Groban. Uh-oh! Not only did he quote lyrics to the Grobes standard “You raise me up” in his speech, he bumped the tune for the room. Then grabbed hands with his wife and the MC of the event and waved them over his head in rhythm to it uhh, awkward! I’d rather steam it out with Joakim Noah and number 7 than sit through that. But wait, it gets worse. Much worse. The A.D. and the team then joined in. Is this Big Ten football or an episode of glee? Unbelievable; I don’t think Bo Schembechler was sitting in his office rocking Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings.” Before heading over to the Big House to punch the Buckeyes in the mouth. Rich, you say you want to keep your job, but your actions suggest you’re begging to be fired. Because while 0-3 against your rival and 15-21 overall may not be a firable offense; joining hands with your boss and your team and rocking the Grobes at your team banquet is. No kid worth his salt is coming to play for a coach who does that.

Shit, if DB did it too then who can we tar and feather next?
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:16 PM ^
Well, he participated, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was mildly weirded out.

Yeah, like you're in church and you do something because everyone else is, even though you don't want to.
December 3rd, 2010 at 6:49 PM ^
Yea thank goodness Jim Rome chimed in about what music other guys should be listening to. He is such a tough guy and all based on the youtube links above. A real mans man.
December 3rd, 2010 at 7:28 PM ^
Eh, Coach Rodriguez is coaching a sport where "manliness" is at a premium. Playing or using music that in general drives most men crazy is just not going to go well no matter what. You can be as non-judgmental about Groban as you like, but it doesn't change the fact that a football coach playing music most men look down on is going to result in negative press. Rome has a point, even if he is a douchebag.

awesome.
JFC what went on at this banquet? yuck..
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:18 PM ^
don't bother asking Mike Valenti, Jim Rome or Terry Foster.
They weren't there either.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:01 PM ^
1. Jim Rome is an over the hill airbag whose best days came shortly after getting a coffee table thrown on top of his smug ass and nearly being beaten to shit on television.
2. A Saban/Chizik type? I'll give you half of that, but I don't know if you realize that the Eugene Chizik's of the world are reason enough to have faith in Rich Rodriguez. 3-9 and then 2-10 at Iowa State, struggling to a "looks more impressive than it really is" 8-5 season. All of a sudden, things click this year.
There's a good chance you see a 9-10 win season out of RichRod next year as well.
3. Why the fuck do we care about this ass again?

millions of people listen to him weekly?
i mean, i know that means dick in real terms, but we got negative attention in abundance right now.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:05 PM ^
really fucking demoralizing. I'm trying desperately not to read this as a verdict on the state of college football, sportscasting and more. . . I know that piling on is the greatest American sport but. . . where is RichRod going to go to get his life back? This may haunt him forever and--unless I'm completely missing something--is totally undeserved.
Can they make the guy such a laughingstock that Brandon pulls the trigger against his better judgement? Quite possible at this stage.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:06 PM ^
I don't think I've ever seen Jim Rome say something positive about anyone. Nothing to see here. Move along, move along.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:15 PM ^
Not defending him on the RR comments because I haven't heard today's first 2 hours yet but the radio show is pretty tame and doesn't consist of much ripping at all
In fact one of the main criticisms of the radio show is how much he sucks up to the athletes and how much praise he heaps onto everything
LOL
(and yes, you can probably tell from this post that I listen to him every day M-F)
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:33 PM ^
I don't think he felt sucked up to at all.
December 3rd, 2010 at 7:42 PM ^
That was a TV show
The radio show is different
I don't have cable so I basically ignore the TV show and I'm not a fan of the TV show but the radio show is alright
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:13 PM ^
Rome is a total fucking asshole and has been for a long time - everything has to be a negative rip on someone. I wish Everett had knocked him cold. Maybe RR will get a chance someday, or maybe we can send Barwis to talk to him.
Brandon should call a press conference tomorrow morning and tell the world RR is staying. We're 7-5 and going to a bowl game. Give him a break.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:11 PM ^
tool.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:12 PM ^
I really like RR and hate to see it going down like this. guy can't catch a break.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:23 PM ^
I didn't have a problem with it, but I can see the other side's view. I don't see it as a desperate move to save his job, but him giving everyone a chance to see how much he cares about the program and team. Regardless of the outcome, I give him credit for wearing his emotions on his sleeve. It can't be easy to do that with everything that's going on right now.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:14 PM ^
We're not going to live down the Groban thing for awhile. I can see it now, in the highlights of our bowl game: "Michigan needed a score on third and goal and Michael Shaw 'raised them up' with a leaping TD..."
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:25 PM ^
but I'll gladly take that joke if Mike Shaw is scoring TDs for us in the bowl game.
Punching people, DUIs, yelling at reporters (even if they deserve it), over-signing, paying players, coaching dirty plays, players taunting, not disciplining your team are all embarassing. I'll gladly take, "coach likes cheesy music when he's down."
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:26 PM ^
the special K's at all the other bigten stadiums are downloading groban right now
December 3rd, 2010 at 8:20 PM ^
they won't get to play it.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:15 PM ^
Rome once did his "Final Burn" on the Pittsburgh Pirates. I mean, really? You're going to put the Pittsburgh Pirates on blast? A team that has no revenue base and is inept every year? You're going to call them out? Thanks, Jim. Die in a fire (pun intended).
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:18 PM ^
Jim Rome has never ever made a good point.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:22 PM ^
I'm just being honest here, I typically enjoy Rome's radio show. I typically get a kick out of his sarcastic sense of humor. A lot of the "clones" are annoying and piss me off, but I usually listen for about 30 minutes a couple days of the week on my lunch.
Now, i'm really pissed because this is bullshit. I've considered him a somewhat rationale smart media guy who doesn't stoop to ESPN-like reporting tactics.
Have I been blind to his idiocy the entire time, or is this uncharacteristic for him?
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:26 PM ^
welcome to the light. He's always been like this.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:25 PM ^
Rome's show would be better if it had more inside jokes and sound clips.
December 3rd, 2010 at 6:29 PM ^
And if he gave listeners an opportunity to cut crappy wrestling-live promos where they rant about some story nobody cares about and fills it with said sound effects and inside jokes.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:32 PM ^
It's about to be on Around the Horn too. Get ready for more of it.
Not much to say about Rome, except that he interrupts the 3.30-6 block of ESPN I usually enjoy. He's a tool and a moron. I could act outraged all of the time too.
Edit 1: Plaschke and Cowlishaw both said RR was self-centered for talking about himself instead of the team.
Also, they're about to discuss it on PTI. Edit to come if I don't shatter my computer/TV. I'm moving to North Korea, I'm tired of the media.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:48 PM ^
So nobody here thinks RR is basically, at this point, trying to force DB's hand? Maybe even baiting him? Maybe even knows his future is elsewhere? The Grobin thing -- with its veiled shots at The Establishment -- doesn't strike me as the most delicate way to handle the job situation. And the Dee Hart flip, given the precise timing of it, makes you wonder whether RR has let it be known the party is over.
RR isn't the kind of guy who patiently sits back and awaits his fate. He's a competitive guy who wants what he wants. I think he wanted to stay, but now knows he's DB's second-choice. So he's trying to force the best, fastest exit possible.
December 3rd, 2010 at 6:10 PM ^
jim rome has been an idiot for years and years now. id be surprised if he was anything less
December 3rd, 2010 at 6:32 PM ^
Whether or not Rome had a good point on this issue, overall the guy is an an overrated sports pundit who plays immense favorites and nearly caused me to drive into oncoming traffic when he went on some rant about how USC was being railroaded by the NCAA over the Reggie Bush situation.
December 3rd, 2010 at 7:36 PM ^
>>success of a Saban/Chizik type coach
Saban is a slimy cheat. Is that what we want? To become Alabama? Overrecruit every year, abuse the medical scholarship system, etc?
Also Jim Rome sucks.
Because....
long...
pauses...
make good radio.
(not).
December 3rd, 2010 at 7:41 PM ^
K I am listening to his radio show from earlier today right now
I don't see the problem with this, he is like "0-3 Againast Ohio State is not firable, 15-21 is not, but LISTENING TO THIS KIND OF MUSIC IS
YOU CANNOT DO THIS"
I disagree, RR can listen and sing whatever he feels like at the banquet, in fact I think it was a great idea for RR to do this
Very motivational song
December 3rd, 2010 at 8:24 PM ^
he just thinks he found something clever and funny that his audience and he can add to the inside joke cache. He's a fool.
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:01 PM ^
Jim Rome is, and always has been, a worthless cocksucker. He's got a fucking Communications degree from some bullshit college (I get to say that bc I have a Communications degree from another bulshit college) and he has never accomplished anything in sports in his life other than talking about it. He's a fuckstick and nothing else.

December 4th, 2010 at 1:12 AM ^
RR needs to send a tweet saying that he, Rome and Foster are headed out to see Five Finger Death Punch or something.
In addition to winning for winning's sake, I hope that we turn things around just to prove what d-bags all of the talking heads have been throughout our transition.
