JoePa on B10 conf call: "If I had to make a guess," Bolden won't play
October 26th, 2010 at 12:34 PM ^
Also said that if he had to make a guess, Edison is crazy with this whole idea of a candle-less light source.
October 26th, 2010 at 12:47 PM ^
Though he did express optimism for movable print, while mentioning three or four times that Gutenberg made a poor drinking buddy.

Smithers, see if you can dig up Al Jolson.
October 26th, 2010 at 1:19 PM ^
it does seem to lend credibility to the rumor coming out of PSU that the coaches are in total disagreement on the program while JoePa has limited/no knowledge of day-to-day operations. the different voices saying he might, he might not, he's not, etc.
October 26th, 2010 at 1:30 PM ^
A good friend of mine is an alum and a huge PSU fan, and he says that the general opinion is exactly as you have described. The various assistants and coordinators are all fighting about the direction of the team and JoePa is completely out of it. He is basically a figure head who comes to practice and screams "outmeal! I need oatmeal, damn it. Now where did I park my horse?"
October 26th, 2010 at 1:53 PM ^
Wasn't he a starting quarterback for Paterno in the 1800's?
October 26th, 2010 at 2:29 PM ^
Paterno benched Edison in favor of an upstart named Alex Grahem Bell. Edison never saw anything more than mop-up duty. Of course, when this happened, fans called for JoePa's head, arguing that by this point, he was way too old to make important decisions for the team.
October 26th, 2010 at 4:19 PM ^
Makes sense. Bell had better communication skills.
October 26th, 2010 at 9:03 PM ^
But man, Edison was just so electrifying on the field.
October 26th, 2010 at 12:35 PM ^
JoePa also remembers what it was like to wake up in the morning and resume his activities with the underground railroad. He may not be thinking too clearly anymore.
October 26th, 2010 at 12:36 PM ^
BLLLLLLLLLLLITZ the QB on saturday, GERG.
October 26th, 2010 at 1:25 PM ^
NAZI!!!!! YER A NAZI!!!!!
October 26th, 2010 at 12:36 PM ^
That would definitely be helpful for us. I wouldn't wish an injury on anyone, but I have no problem encouraging the team to take advantage of one.
October 26th, 2010 at 12:41 PM ^
Man PSU is falling apart, Paterno really needs to go. I mean him leaving has nothing to do with the injuries they have had but just watching them play and the interaction on the sidelines between JoePa and the other coaches is a shame to watch, almost comical. He kind of wanders around with no headset(probably the only coach in D1 football without one) and then he bickers with the red headed guy when a play doesnt work, and it seems like the guy just blows him off. I hear from people close to the program it is udder chaos behind closed doors, coaches fighting, Paterno never at meetings or practice and having no clue who some players are. He is more like a spokesperson than the actual coach. They need to get him a lazyboy and a cup of Tapioca Pudding and let him watch from the booth
October 26th, 2010 at 12:41 PM ^
Isn't one requirement of being a spokesperson the ability to, you know, speak?
October 26th, 2010 at 1:41 PM ^
tell that to Lou Holtz
October 26th, 2010 at 12:42 PM ^
Yeah, he's wandering around the sidelines, asking everybody where he is and if they know where he parked his car.
October 26th, 2010 at 7:55 PM ^
Is that the reason Silver Alerts keep popping up on my tv everytime PSU plays?
October 26th, 2010 at 12:42 PM ^
Udder chaos? Are the cows out of control?
October 26th, 2010 at 12:44 PM ^
I threw that in there because PSU is kind of on a farm and the place smells like Pig Shit
October 26th, 2010 at 12:53 PM ^
They did used to be the Agricultural College of Pennsylvania.
October 26th, 2010 at 12:44 PM ^
Wow, that was a depressing account of their current situation.
October 26th, 2010 at 12:59 PM ^
One, he is awesome. If you love old school at its best, you gotta love JoePa. Imagine how those classic uniforms would have been desecrated if they'd had the coaching turnover of a normal school. They're my second-favorite Big Ten team.
Two, as a Michigan fan, we have a pretty good record against JoePa -- why mess that up?
October 26th, 2010 at 1:03 PM ^
I just have this vision of Weekend at Bernie's when I think of JoePa now.
EDIT: my bad, did not scroll down. Great pic, great movie.
October 26th, 2010 at 3:30 PM ^
It's completely ridiculous but that redheaded guy (Mike McQueary, former PSU quarterback) serves as JoePa's headset. His in-game responsibility is to relay to Paterno what's being said and also relay comments back to the other coaches.
October 26th, 2010 at 12:40 PM ^
He also mentioned that if he could do it all over again, that he wouldn't of played Bernie in the hit movie "weekend at Bernies", which is also known as the Joe Pa movie.
October 26th, 2010 at 4:22 PM ^
My wife likes to bring up my lack of taste in movies by mentioning how i like watching this movie. The water skiing segment is classic.
October 26th, 2010 at 12:45 PM ^
yall wanna win out boobie in!
October 26th, 2010 at 12:46 PM ^
JoePa is a smart man and has definitely see a concussion or 100 in his coaching career. He will make the decision that best benefits the health of his young QB.
That aside, if we make a Sheridan type walk-on look like a Heisman candidate I will most likely have a seizure
October 26th, 2010 at 12:47 PM ^
lol wut you're so old
October 26th, 2010 at 12:48 PM ^
I bet he steals books from Brentanos and then claims he was "confused" when security busts him. Then he gets mad at his coaches when they don't say "hello" to him in the hallway/restroom/filmroom/etc.
I think this is all a clever smoke screen from PSU to confuse and confound our defense as to who is starting. It's too bad that we could really care less due to the fact that all 3 of their QB's suck. Have fun, crazies.
October 26th, 2010 at 12:48 PM ^
We cannot assume Penn State will not come out ready to play. We have to play a great first half in order to emotionally wear them down. Then we have to start the second half well in case they get their emotions back at half time. Next to the UConn game, this is our most important game of the year to continue to show the country, the conference, and recruits that we are on our way back. Go Blue!
October 26th, 2010 at 12:53 PM ^
I'm morbidly curious about what would happen if someone asked Joe if he excpected Ki-Jana Carter or Zack Mills to play this weekend.
October 26th, 2010 at 12:56 PM ^
He would say Mills has not practiced this week and Carter is still a freshman and makes freshman mistakes, he has a bright future though
October 26th, 2010 at 3:13 PM ^
I used to know one of our football sideline ball boys. One year (either 1999 or 2000) he was the guy who worked the opposing sideline, so he got to see opposing coaches up close. When we were playing PSU, we were moving the ball pretty well offensively. At one point, a frustrated JoePa screamed "CONLAN! GET CONLAN IN THERE!"
Shane Conlan played LB at PSU in the 1980s.

Does anyone really know, and I mean really know, not just guessing or listening to internet rumors, how much control JoePa actually has these days?
I think the assumption has been for a while that he is merely a figurehead, but even a figurehead can give the pregame speeches, decide personnel issues, etc. Is there any actual indication that he has given this all up and his only role these days is simply to stand on the sidelines?
If he still has some control, I'd lean towards Bolden sitting, but every other sign seems to indicate that he's probable, and if it's up to someone else, I bet he plays.
October 26th, 2010 at 1:00 PM ^
Bolden failed some memory tests yesterday, so he is still feeling the aftereffects of a concussion. It's not about Paterno's authority or lack thereof; it's a medical decision.
October 26th, 2010 at 1:52 PM ^
I obviously haven't heard the conference call, and was under the impression that JoePa was just giving his opinion, which seems to contradict the official injury report that listed him as probable.
If he failed the memory tests that probably rules him out. Don't most guidelines mandate a week from demonstrable effects of a concussion?
October 26th, 2010 at 2:04 PM ^
FYI, I'm seeing in newspaper reports that he failed the memory tests on Sunday and will be retested today.
October 26th, 2010 at 1:02 PM ^
It's striking to me that Joe Pa sounds like an internet commentator and not like the guy charged with making the decision: "if I had to guess..."
Whether that's due to the contingency of Bolden's recovery progress or because Joe Pa's a thousand years old, who knows.
October 26th, 2010 at 8:37 PM ^
He almost certainly isn't the guy charged with making the decision. That guy is probably a doctor. If he's cleared, Paterno buts Bolden in. If not, then not.
