Michigan Injury Report for Michigan State
Press Release:
OUT (0% PLAY)
Jones, Mike Leg
Toussaint, Fitzgerald Shoulder
Van Slyke, Jared Clavicle
Williams, Mike Head
Woolfolk, Troy Ankle
PROBABLE (75% PLAY)
Ferrara, John Hand
Shaw, Mike Knee
/press release.
Positives: Shaw will probably play, Brandon Herron is not listed on the injury report at all. Herron's return should allow Craig Roh to return to defensive end, where he's been much more effective.
As for the negatives, it's unfortunate that Fitzgerald Toussaint will miss yet another game, meaning one of Michigan's top options (just a guess, and only when he's healthy, which is never) won't be available.
Everything else is either already known (Jones, Woolfolk, Van Slyke out for the year, Mike Williams probably for that long) or unimportant, as Michigan's newfound depth at offensive line making John Ferrara's return a luxury.

He's already redshirted, can we get this guy a medical redshirt too? Call it the Dr. Phillips backup plan.
October 7th, 2010 at 9:29 PM ^
Seriously. Toussaint can't catch a break.
October 7th, 2010 at 10:17 PM ^
Fitz scores his first TD of his M career, on his 2nd carry ever. Sometime during his first or second carry he injures his shoulder. Ironically, RR said if he didn't have to wear the knee brace he would have scored on his 1st carry ever on that long run.

He's already caught a break. And a strain, and a pull, and a sprain, and...

No fing shit.. God damn it.. Seriously this kid being hurt has been the worse fuckin news all year.. Im hoping to god he doesn't turn out to be like Minor..
On the other hand, at least it says his injury is his shoulder, and not both his shoulder and his knee..
October 8th, 2010 at 1:17 AM ^
losing Woolfolk was a lot worse news than having Fitz sit out another game, especially the way our secondary performed against those rednecks from Indiana.
October 7th, 2010 at 10:38 PM ^
You can get 6 years to play 4 if both of his redshirt years are medical. In his case they would be.
October 8th, 2010 at 1:14 AM ^
Nick Saban were here I bet he could get Fitz his medical scholarship. Word has it Saban is pretty damn good at doing just that down in Tuscaloosa (frickin' cheater!).
October 8th, 2010 at 10:24 AM ^
You are confusing a medical redshirt (one year that doesn't count against the player's 4 years of eligibility) with a medical hardship scholarship (the player's career is over, but he remains on scholarship until he graduates). These are not the same thing.

Great news about Shaw!
October 8th, 2010 at 8:28 AM ^
Great news but I'm wondering how effective he will be. I think it's clear he is our best option at RB. Vincent seems to have lost some of his quickness and at his size that isn't good.
October 7th, 2010 at 9:41 PM ^
Shaw's return is HUGE! I'm so stoked to watch our offense run up and down the field against them.

Herron is really the best guy on the roster to do the linebacker half of the Deathbacker LB/DE role. Roh is better suited as a chaser and destroyer of quarterbacks. Unless I'm mistaken, the plan would be to put Roh on the line in place of Banks/Sagesse, and leaving Herron as the hybrid.
The coaches apparently felt that the Roh as LB/Banks at DE combo was better than the J.B. Fitzgerald at LB/Roh at DE combo. However, the consensus is that Herron at LB/Roh at DE is better than both.
October 7th, 2010 at 9:48 PM ^
If he can't come back and be 100% this year (and it's obvious he was nowhere near 100% vs. BGSU), I'd rather him go for the MR and heal up completely.
October 8th, 2010 at 8:44 AM ^
Fitz already redshirted and played in a game more than 1/3 through the season.
Medical redshirts for a 6th year of eligibility usually require a major injury.
October 8th, 2010 at 9:38 AM ^
You might be right, but:
Fitz already redshirted
You can get a MR if you've already redshirted;
played in a game more than 1/3 through the season.
No, it was exactly 1/3 of the way through the season (BGSU--game 4 of 12);
Medical redshirts for a 6th year of eligibility usually require a major injury.
Ah, here's the rub, isn't it. Can you confirm this, or is this just your impression/assumption/belief?
October 7th, 2010 at 10:11 PM ^
Man, hearing Fitz is out is really bad news. Is this kid ever going to get healthy, or is he just going to be injured for 4 years? I hope he can get his physical well-being in order, not just for the sake of the team, but for his own good.
Having Shaw back is great. Vincent Smith has been OK, but Shaw is much more of a threat in the running game, though both have performed well blocking.
October 7th, 2010 at 10:23 PM ^
Any timetable for when Fitz will see the field?
October 7th, 2010 at 10:28 PM ^
2015?
October 8th, 2010 at 8:24 AM ^
I think with Shaw and Smith playing well they are going to wait until fitz is completely healthy. I'm thinking he wont see any meaningful snaps until next year, but that's just a guess.
October 7th, 2010 at 10:45 PM ^
Don't worry, he's not like Minor at all—at least Minor was on the field enough with the ball in his hands to have an MGoBlog term named after him. Sadly, there will be no equivalent of MinorRage for Fitz Toussain't Gonna Ever Be Healthy.
October 8th, 2010 at 10:30 AM ^
I would kill for Touissant to play as much as Minor. Seriously. (whispering) I would kill someone. (looks around nervously).

October 8th, 2010 at 12:02 AM ^
being out really that big of a deal? I mean it sucks for him, but do we really think he would get any meaningful carries in a game like this even if he was 100%? He's had two snaps all year, I'm not sure this game would be the time to work him into the gameplan, especially since what we've been doing with Shaw/Smith has been doing just fine.
October 8th, 2010 at 5:00 AM ^
i think we played last week safe
October 8th, 2010 at 7:58 AM ^
what could possibly give you that impression?
October 8th, 2010 at 8:26 AM ^
Is an Old Acadian phrase that roughly translates to 'this is why Vinnie Smith is so reliable"
October 8th, 2010 at 10:27 AM ^
I think Fitzgerald Toussaint is Acadian for "Sidd Finch." Did he sign his letter of intent on April 1, perchance?
October 8th, 2010 at 9:07 AM ^
Everything else is either already known (Jones, Woolfolk, Van Slyke out for the year, Mike Williams probably for that long) or unimportant
What about Carvin Johnson being off the injury report for the first time since the UConn game? Even if he wasn't great in the Indiana game, it seemed like there was a lot of pre-season buzz on him. His injury @ UConn happened right in front of me and I didn't think we'd see him again this year.
I'm thrilled to see him off the injury report. At worst, he provides a much needed breather for the defense. At best, he grows all year and becomes a key contributor by the end.
October 8th, 2010 at 11:19 AM ^
maybe it's time to consider moving ferrara back to DT.
October 8th, 2010 at 11:36 AM ^
Let's stop freaking out about Toussaint. He's had some bad injury luck, but we're still only half way through his first year of eligibility. Let's not annoint him perma-injured just yet.
He still might play in half the games this year, and even if he doesn't, he'll have the whole off-season to get healed and he'll have 3 years to play football for us.
If this is still a problem in his junior year, let's comlain. Until then, injuries happen, man.
