Michigan a "Wine and Cheese" Crowd?
The Huskies football beat writer for the Hartford Courant has some interesting things to say about the Michigan crowd:
I'm sure they'll be prepared for crowd noise but my understanding is they'll be playing in front of more of a, well, wine and cheese crowd from what I understand. For such a big place it's pretty quiet on gameday. Either way I'm almost sure they'll prepare for what it could be.

I didn't post this for a bunch of you guys to blow up this dude's blog with comments. I just want to make sure that those of you who will be at the game have enough motivation to scream your asses off and be loud. Ohh and some of you might want to stop by T-Dog's tailgate and offer him some of your wine and cheese in the interest of hospitality.
Tell one, tell all - look for the 20' UCONN Flag over an RV and come ask for TDog! (aka The Don, aka Tink, aka #2 Husky Fan - behind Ryan Phelan of course)
Saturday night the Wolverine fans are going to be screaming for Rodriguez's head on a platter and saying Appalachian State all over again!

Go Blue. Beat UConn. 8 days
August 27th, 2010 at 3:22 PM ^
But...I'm pretty sure it's going to get CRAZY LOUD in the Big House, especially during Brocks moment.
August 27th, 2010 at 3:30 PM ^
Someone else actually checks the Hartford Courant and posted the same comment? Random postings from obscure New England newspapers was my niche on this site!
August 27th, 2010 at 3:23 PM ^
This has already been posted. Althought to the second block quote: why would we scream appalachian state as part of an attempt to dethrone RR?
August 27th, 2010 at 3:26 PM ^
They clearly have some self-esteem issues, or the guy hasn't checked the news since 2002.
August 27th, 2010 at 3:30 PM ^
Yeah, I don't get it. Are they saying they should be 30 point underdogs or something? Or that there should be no logical chance that UConn wins aside from some fluke happening?
August 27th, 2010 at 4:49 PM ^
why would we scream Ap state? I am confused. Did he just equate his team to App State?I would think any team would have more self-esteem than to compare oneselves to a D1-FCS school.
August 27th, 2010 at 3:26 PM ^
Well, there is definitely a wine-and-cheese element to our crowd, especially those in the sections near midfield. But they're in for a rude awakening if they think the entire stadium will be like that, especially now that the new boxes reflect noise back down to the field.
August 27th, 2010 at 5:13 PM ^
Also, the wine and cheese crowd should be in the luxury boxes now. It's kind of funny that the boxes that are now keeping more noise in are also holding the quiet "wine and cheese" fans stored in there. If that isn't two birds with one stone, I don't know what is.
August 27th, 2010 at 5:19 PM ^
haha excellent point.
August 27th, 2010 at 3:35 PM ^
I can say when I had season tickets for a few years that the 40ish old guy in front of me used to read the news paper most the game and seemed annoyed by most of us in the section who were there to watch the game. The wine is cheese comment isn't to far off but I think the new BH will be better and maybe we can kick that stigma.
August 27th, 2010 at 3:37 PM ^
I like how he compares his team to Appalachian State.
August 27th, 2010 at 3:40 PM ^
UConn has a football team?? I thought they just had WOMEN's basketball? Go figure.
August 27th, 2010 at 3:46 PM ^
Not gonna lie, camembert with a petit syrah on the golf course gets me excited for some Michigan football.
August 27th, 2010 at 4:48 PM ^
Or a classic Bordeaux, like a nice hearty Latour '96.
August 27th, 2010 at 10:38 PM ^
I'm deathly allergic to wine, but there really is a cheese for everything. Mmmmmmm cheese.
August 28th, 2010 at 12:32 AM ^
But I mostly wanted to compliment you on your username. Dreisback Turner Overdrive--classic!
Then again, as a Michigan alum perhaps I shouldn't use words like "hunk"

You want a hunk? Here's some hunks...

Clevelander here, and when we took our good buddy to his first Michigan game, which happened to be the ND game last year (lucky bastard), he was given a lot of shit in the weeks leading up to the game by our mutual friends. The wine and cheese thing being one of the most prevalent responses.
We tailgated in the golf course that day, and the people right next to us set up their little table with a various assortment of......wine and cheese. Couldn't believe it, it was hilarious, he called our buddy on the spot and we all had a good laugh, then the game happened and we had an even better day!
August 27th, 2010 at 3:53 PM ^
his newspaper is called the "Courant." Slow down on the effete elite barrage there, kettle.
August 27th, 2010 at 4:06 PM ^
have never been able to sneak wine into the stadium. You can get cheese in there but not in such a way that it's easy to eat it later.

Once upon a time, I was one of those fans who felt running up a score was below us. After the last couple of years, I am over that. Large margins will be fine, thank you.

Michigan fans can now learn of the douchery that we have to deal with every year. A school that plays in a 40,000 seat stadium they rarely fill, that sits a half-hour from campus in East Hartford for crying out loud - talking trash to Michigan about its crowd?
Wow.
Just wait for the first Jets-ripoff U-C-O-N-N cheer and the hate will come naturally.
Douchebags.
August 27th, 2010 at 4:25 PM ^
The facetiousness and lack of depth with which they treat the subject demonstrates their effrontery. They know not the intensity, almost lasciviousness with which we desire to see their youthful squad manhandled on the field. If proving our drive equal to their own requires that one should, "pound a lager", rather than enjoy a fine Syrah or sit quietly near the hearth with a snifter of brandy, then so be it.
Bring forth the "Bud-weis-er". Did I say that right?
August 27th, 2010 at 4:40 PM ^
The "wine and cheese crowd" label is always going to be attached to us. But those fans are in for a big surprise when they actually hear the crowd next Saturday.
August 27th, 2010 at 4:43 PM ^
Don't know if anyone else posted this but it comes from the mailbag on ESPN's Big East Blog. The blogger handles it well I think:
Eddie from Norwalk, Conn., writes: Most of us will agree that UConn will be favored vs. Michigan, now I'm sure, but most people won't predict us to win by more then a touchdown or two. But what if, and this is a strong what if, UConn comes out with a commanding lead towards the end of the game. Now in that case do you see Rand Edsall running the score up if the opportunity presents itself? I understand Edsall is a classy guy and one of the most respected coaches out there, so this seems unlikely. But as all of us here in CT remember the last time our Huskies faced Rich Rod back in '07 -- he had no problem unleashing his offense on us way after the game was won. Outscoring us in the second half 7-42.
Brian Bennett: Eddie, I admire your optimism. UConn is not going to be favored at Michigan, though the Huskies have a great chance of winning that game. Running up the score? I think this game is going to be close. The Wolverines still have a lot of talent and are desperate to get the season off to a good start. But keep dreaming big.

You're in for a rude awakening, son, when you feel the wrath of RR and the 2010 Wolverine offense! You better wish and dream about the ass-whooping you got at the hands of West Virginia because September 4th 2010 against UM will be a nightmare.

couldn't help it...
August 27th, 2010 at 7:20 PM ^
Don't forget Bo's infamous thrashing of Illinois in 1981 as payback for the way they treated Gary Moeller. There's a reason why Illinois has a chip on their shoulder about Michigan.
August 27th, 2010 at 8:49 PM ^
Up 49-31 last year against SU, instead of taking a knee and ending the game, UConn ran a playfake to throw for a TD. So yes, they do run up the score.
And I hope we do it to them. No mercy.
August 27th, 2010 at 5:29 PM ^
I enjoy wine and cheese. I also leave the stadium with no voice.
Maybe we should plant the seed that the 110,000 people isn't really all that many either. Idiots.
August 27th, 2010 at 5:38 PM ^
Nothing beats the sound of the crowd when the band hits the field, acknowledging that the first official game activity of the 2010 season is under way, or even better, the moment that M CLUB banner is raised and the team comes storming out of the tunnel for the first time. Man I'm getting chills just thinking about it.

This is far from the first time that I have read where Michigan Stadium is tame.
It's been true for the most part, of course there have been times where it's been loud but it's fairly accurate.
I always thought Michigan fans are a little like Boston Red Sox fans before they won the series. It's like ya we're winning but we'll blow it in the end just wait and see.
I'm not saying everyone in the stadium is like that but there is that element there.
I've sat by the sit down shut up crowd, I've sat by people who talk about shopping all game long, I've sat by book readers during the game etc etc...
This will be my 17th yr having season tickets. It will be interesting to see how many of those "quiet types" move up to the boxes and how the boxes actually help keep in the noise. We'll actually find out before the game with the help of Brock!!
August 27th, 2010 at 6:42 PM ^
I think RR is going to run it up on a lot of teams this year, especially PurDON'T. UConn is in for a very rude awakening, they don't see speed like this in the big least. Enjoy your trip to AA Huskies fans cause it's a longggg ride back. GO BLUE
August 28th, 2010 at 12:00 AM ^
Even if there were no renovations, it'd still be louder than most places they play at. The average size of Big East stadiumsis like what, 50,000? Maybe bigger than that, but either way, it's going to be a raucous crowd Sept. 4. If the players have the same mentality as their fans, they're going to get their asses wooped.
