Even the FS, especially in a single high look, needs to be an outstanding open field tackler. I'm guessing Harris' primary weakness would be run support and getting thundertrucked by TEs rumbling down the seam. Stribling was a subpar run supporter and he was still able to thrive at CB.

I second your opinion that he's an unknown tackler and too frail in iso situations with RBs and TEs.

The biggest thing though, IIRC, is that the FS in Don Brown's system is the quarterback of the defense and calls out coverages. That's just too much to ask on top of trying to learn a new position. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if someone like McCray took over those responsibilities on this young squad.

"Our WR talent is stacked!!!" Yeah, and they are all freshman and sophomores (who have only run jet sweeps thus far). Consider me a little more worried than the rest of you.

DPJ is a top 10 recruit. Tarik Black tore it up during spring ball and the spring game. The rest of the best WR haul in UM history is coming soon. Crawford got a lot of experience last year as a freshman running real routes and did a great job blocking. Mcdoom got a ton of snaps last year as well (although you are right that he ran mostly jet sweeps).

They are unproven, but I'm not sure we've seen anything from Harris that would make us believe he's the glue holding the group together. Removing him from the wr equation probably doesn't change the outcome much, if at all.

Seems like the message is "we have lots of WR talent and you haven't progressed much in 3 years there." I don't see his rail stature enabling any physicality at CB - maybe he is Channing 2.0 this fall. It's tough to win quality time, let alone with fragile hammies. Good luck to him.

Sucks that he just can't seem to stay healthy. Really hope it works out for him.

Drake was such a stud WR in high school I thought he'd do really well in college. Injuries sure set him back in the beginning but obviously hasn't gotten on the field much even when healthy. I don't remember him playing any DB in high school. With a thin as he is it seems like DB would be a hard place for him to get much playing time.
Hope I'm wrong and Drake finally gets some PT.

As Brian says it's early late for the Ways and Drake sort of guys.  A position switch this late doesn't usually work - Freddy Canteen style.  When you've had 3 years at your primary position to make an impact and you cannot, it's not good.   Don't think this says anything about his CB skills - if he was switching to be a contributor it would have been pre-spring.

This is just a wild guess, but maybe they've just given up on the idea of him running forward. Clearly his hamstrings weren't designed for that, so they're working on his backpedal now.

He's not likely to see the field in any significant capacity this fall.  They've just moved him to a position where he is buried a little less deeply on the depth chart.  Just like Canteen, he will putter around for a year, then say his goodbyes.

I've met Drake's mom and know one of her best friends.  Drake fought hard to stay on this team, he was asked if he wanted to transfer and he had to fight to still have a spot.  He wants to play any way he can.
