Bryan Mone news (great)

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

This is good.

Just saw Bryan Mone walking out of Schembechler. No brace. No crutches. Normal walk.

He's been doing ~some~ things this week. Given that he's had two significant injuries in his last 6 weeks of playing football, I would not play him this week.

We can shut down Wiscy without him, he can come back and knock the rust off against Illinois then help us shut out MSU the next week.

I meant in the last cumulative 6 weeks of playing football. Season ender in camp last fall then another in the first game this year after 4 weeks of camp. Just meant to say he hasn't played a lot of injury-free, full-go football in the last 14 months and I don't think we should rush him back when he's not needed to win.

Agree we don't know if he'll be needed or not, but either he's ready or he's not. I don't think he needs meaningful game snaps to come back though. He doesn't need experience, he needs conditioning, which he can get without the re-injury risk. Assuming he comes back for Illinois, that would be a good chance for him to get game snaps before MSU.

The issue may be game fitness and conditioning at this point.  4 weeks off may leave him not game ready.  If he plays I doubt it's more than a few snaps.

Our defensive line is already terrific.  Getting Mone back makes us downright scary, with incredible depth.

This is the most excited about our defense than I have been since '97.  Am old enough also to remember that '80 team that was dominating at year end, led by Andy Cannavino and big Mel Owens that held teams to 9 points in their final 5 games (3 shoutouts, beat Ohio 9-3 and won Bo his first Rose Bowl, beating Washington 23-6).  This defense has the chance to be dominating like those two were.

Will be great to see Mone take that first snap back...

I'm super excited that he's getting better. I was hoping for 10- 15 snaps in short yardage stuff this week, maybe still a possibility? Either way it's good to hear that he's on his way back

Glad this dude is progressing--going to need him for the big games (not that Wisconsin this week isn't big).  Good cautious approach from a coaching staff who understand where our team is and where this guy is in his rehab.

Will be good to have him back most likely after the bye and for the big matchup with MSU.

Sam Webb and Harbaugh were talking yesterday and the interview was aired this morning. Mone is still very limited in practice and they are adding more things to what he can do, but there is no real chance he will play Saturday.

Looking for non-homer answers.

Do we have the best D-line in the country and if not who is out there that is better or even close?

I ask this because I know all our guys and we seem quite elite, but I am not that in tune with what other teams (Bama, OSU, LSU) have up front and obviously I am biased.

Taco, Hurst, Mone (hopefully healthy), Glasgow, Wormley, Gary....

I might be missing some other contributors like Winovich or Marshall.

It seems like 5-6 of these guys are legit NFL players.

Also, where would our secondary rank?  Lewis is obviously elite.  Is Stribling simply average or is he above average?  Losing Clark obviously sucks.  Where does Dymonte rank as a safety?

Just curious for some non-homer answers.

Think our DL is probably top 2 with Bama, they might be #1.

Our secondary is probably top 5 although that takes a hit without Clark. Strib is very good. Lewis is elite. Delano has been very solid. Don't know that we are above OSU and Florida, maybe another I'm missing. Florida just let up a huge comeback but they've got some dudes.

From the comments above it sounds like he's progressing but won't play this week.  Still, I hope that's overly cautious and he's 100% and able to go because having a big run stuffer in the middle against Wisconsin double teams would be ideal.  Mone would help Saturday not only because Wisconsin is good, but also their style of play.  While Godin has been very good so far this year, and Glasgow is Glasgow, Mone is better than both in standing up to doubles. Hope he's good to go!

be great to get him back in the lineup. But, just because he's walking normal I wouldn't count on him playing just yet. Big difference between walking around and playing in a D1 football game, but let's hope he's close to playing again.

I obviously love when players come back from injury because you want to see everyone play and succeed.

I've noticed a lot of excitement for Mone's return, but he hasn't really been on the field for 1.3 seasons at this point. What is the learning curve and rust shake-off that should be expected?

And said he came back as one of the best players on defense.

He started game 1.

I can't wait to see him and Glasgow next to each other. Try to run on THAT Wisconsin.

You mean on the depth chart, or on the field?  The coaches blah-blahed about being flexible but only a few guys actually play multiple positions without some drop-off, which is no surprise.  Glasgow and Mone are both pretty pure NTs.  I think Hurst rotates behind Glasgow at NT when Mone's out, but he's better at 3T.  I mean, he's fine at nose, but rotating Glasgow and Mone at NT gives us the first- AND second-best D-lines in the B1G.

Plus, with Gary (SDE/WDE) and Wormley (SDE/3T) able to move around the line, this gives us some really sick options when we're not shuffling them to maintain a rotation.  For example, we once rolled out a D-line "kaiju" package of Wormley/Glasgow/Hurst/Gary when Taco was still out, which is just being mean, but we can't sustain that -- the 2nd string is significantly worse.  With Taco and Mone back, we can roll that into Taco/Mone/Godin/Winovich, which isn't nearly as terrifying, but that's still a damn good line.  Like, here's a runaway train and now we're going to follow that up by hitting you with a cement truck.
