OT: Favorite Podcasts
Hey all. Sorry if this topic has come up before but I don't remember seeing anything. Recently I've become a podcast junky and can't get enough. I'm always looking for the next "must listen to" podcast. So my question to you is, what are your favorites? Here are a couple of mine....
1. Sword and Scale: If you like true crime this is the best I've come across. Be warned though it is VERY graphic, some real sick stuff. (most are about 1hr long)
2. Lore: As you may have guessed it's all about folk lore. Some true through i.e. HH Holmes a UM alum. (on average about 20-30 minutes long)
3. Criminal: More true crime but at different angle. Different topics from different view points. (on average about 20-30 minutes long)
4. The Unresolved Podcast: Based on unsolved mysteries. A fairly new podcast. Topics range from psychotic killers to folk lore. (wide range, 40-60 minutes long)
5. Serial: If you podcast you've most surely heard of this one. True crime into it's second season. I recommend binge listening to this one. A lot of in-depth info, too much to wait 2 weeks between episodes.
6. Radiolab: A WIDE range of topics. They have a huge library of episodes, you'll surely find something that interests you. Great research done by this team.
Those are my favorites. What's yours?? I need more! Must have more!

MGoPodcast?

My favorite is The Solid Verbal. The best CFB podcast that I've come across that isn't the MGoPodcast. They cover everything, and during the season put out two episodes a week - a recap and a preview.

I enjoy Solid Verbal. Ty seems like a cool guy, but Dan is a little annoying.
February 24th, 2016 at 4:14 PM ^
Solid Verbal is, in my opinion, the best podcast on the internet.
Ty is my favorite too, but Dan has grown on me because he doesn't take himself too seriously.

I've been working my way through Hardcore History and The History of Rome.
February 24th, 2016 at 1:45 PM ^
History of Rome is great, if you like that sort of thing.
For history buffs, I would also recommend a BBC Radio series, "A History of the World in 100 Objects." It loses a little, but not too much, when you can't see the object during the podcast. They are all viewable on the BBC & the British Museum websites, though.

While on the history theme, History of England (and its sister podcast History of Anglo Saxon England) is great. Just the right balance of history and humor as well as a great way to pick up some new slang (e.g. the correct way to use "the rough end of the pineapple").
February 24th, 2016 at 3:48 PM ^
The guy who did The History of Rome podcast, Mike Duncan, is doing new series on revolutions now that's also great. I'm about 2/3rds through the French revolution and it's every bit as good as History of Rome.

1. Michigan Insider with San and Ira from WTKA
2. Adam Carolla

MGoPodcast, WTKA, Solomonster Sounds Off.
February 24th, 2016 at 1:46 PM ^
I looked up Solomonster Sounds Off since I have never heard of it before, but I should have known it was a WWE podcast.

Wrestling Soup is one that anyone can listen to and laugh. It's amazing. You don't even have to be a wrestling fan to laugh at it.
February 24th, 2016 at 1:39 PM ^
I've never listened to a podcast in my life. Is that weird? Am I missing anything really good?? FYI, I still read books, so maybe I am just old fashioned...
February 24th, 2016 at 1:46 PM ^
I find them helpful when you're doing something kind of mundane but necessary like cooking dinner, driving long distances, or working out. You're not alone. I started in on them because I lived far away from Michigan and needed some sports content that fit my interests.

I listen to podcasts when walking to and from the office. Nice way to make that time feel productive. I also don't have TV, so it can help supplement some of the things I might get if I did. Favorites are:
- BBC Global News
- Freakonomics
- Question of the Day
- This American Life
- PTI
- The Moth
Also, if you want an amazing aid to help you fall asleep at night, the Moth is incredible for that. It's like having somene read you a bedtime story. I turn on an episode every night when I get into bed, and I am always out before the story even gets going. One episode can last me weeks because it knock me out so quickly.

Just listened to a Freakonomics episode on education. Really good content, but it was like 15 minutes of subject material wrapped up in a 40 minute show.
February 24th, 2016 at 1:39 PM ^
I like comedy podcasts when I'm doing something tedious like computer work or working out.
I enjoy How Did This Get Made where they talk through badly made or unusual movies.
The Andy Daly Podcast Pilot Project is also hilarious though there's only eight episodes. Andy Daly and crew pretend to be other characters submitting ridiculous podcast pilots to be picked up for a full run.
My friend just recommended the Blacktapes Podcast which goes over this guy's attempt to debunk unexplained mysteries (basically the X Files?)

Should give The Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast a go too. The podcast series is over, last episode was last July iirc but there are over 200 podcasts to listen to. Start off by listening to the Beyond Belief ones first as they're the funniest/best. Sparks Nevada universe is a close second and then Captain Laserbeam. I wish more people knew about this show, so good. Paul F Tompkins, Paget Brewster, Mark Gagliardi, Autumn Reeser, Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Alison Brie, Colin Hanks, the list goes on and on.

Not in any order:
- Freakonomics
- Econtalk
- Bill Simmons Podcast
- Serial
- How did this get made?
- Free Thinking on BBC3
- Analysis on BBC4
- Hoover Institute Podcast

Great list... love Freakonomics

Need to get back on the Econtalk bandwagon. Totally forgot about that one. Great podcast.

MGo
Michigan Insider
Michigan Man Podcast (during CFB season)
The Wolverine (spotty some better than others)
Solid Verbal when they talk Michigan...otherwise they are too windy

Did The Wolverine fix their audio issues? I'm not a sub anymore, but even when I was I couldn't listen because the audio quality was so bad.
February 24th, 2016 at 2:10 PM ^
Like I said the quality of some is better than others. They definitely do not have high quality sound equipment for sure.

"How Did This Get Made?" is very funny. Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas talk about terrible movies.

1. Hardcore History: probably the bes podcast I've ever listened to. If you are even a casual history fan, I'd recommend starting the series "Blueprint for Armageddon", which covers WWI. It is fascinating and I have yet to find a person who has listened to it and did not thoroughly enjoy it
2. A16Z: If you're into tech, this is a pretty good one that is hosted by Andreesen Horowitz. It can sometimes be a bit too detailed/wonky, but generally strong guests.
3. Planet Money: Just a good conversation and discussion around various financial topics in an approachable way.

Thanks I'm a bigtime WW1 history buff will check that out.
February 24th, 2016 at 3:51 PM ^
I've listened to pretty much all of the Hardcore History, and love them all. But a particular favorite is Wrath of Khans - the story of Genghis Khan dynasty. I knew nothing about that subject or period in history, and it was incredibly eye-opening (ear-opening?) and absolutely riveting.

Just started blueprint for armageddon and it's incredible. Good recommendation.
February 24th, 2016 at 1:43 PM ^
This American Life is great. Of course, it's just the radio show without breaks. If you've never listened, search for the "419 Baiter" podcast. Just don't drive, you may run someone over while you are laughing.
For Stephen King fans - The Stephen King Podcast. A bit cheesy, but still good for an hour.
Planet Money has a good podcast with 7-10min clips.
Jim Harold's Campfire - A call in podcast of ghost stories/unexplained stuff. It's hokey, but a favorite of mine when flying for some reason.
Star Talk Radio is great of course. It's waned a bit since the TV show came out and NdGT is always touring.
Great topic for a post OP.

Marc Maron's WTF podcast had Sacha Baron Cohen on this week for a nearly 2 hour conversation. Sacha rarely does interviews as himself, and it get into some great stories about filming his movies. Highly recommend it.
February 24th, 2016 at 1:49 PM ^
He does some pretty cool interviews. I mean, from the President to Maynard from Tool, he gets some good conversations out in his garage.
February 24th, 2016 at 2:33 PM ^
He gets some good guests and it is fine for them telling their story, but Maron doesn't really ask any tough questions and tends to fawn over all his guests.
February 24th, 2016 at 1:43 PM ^
Are there any podcasts that just talk about and describe cat videos? I'd be down with that.
February 24th, 2016 at 1:43 PM ^
The best sports one I haven't seen listed yet is the "Shutdown Fullcast", which covers college football in a completely absurdist style. It has lots of in-jokes, but they make fun of everyone and are usually good for several out-loud laughs from me per episode.
February 24th, 2016 at 2:24 PM ^
