Swenson decommit: more info ...
OK, don't shoot the messenger ... just 1-side of the story and just reporting ... doesn't look great tho
“Coach Drevno just said they’re trying to put the best recruiting class they can together,” Molinari said. “They’ve gained a ton of interest from a lot of recruits they never thought they’d have interest from. It wasn’t just a coach Drevno thing. They sat down and thought there wasn’t going to be one for Erik at this point — not a full scholarship, a preferred walk-on.”

That doesn't mean what he said is entirely correct nor self-serving. I'm reminded of how upset the MGoBlog intelligensia was about Norfleet and how his HS coach said he had been treated. But of course we found out later that almost everything we first learned was full of shit.

Obviously.

...but for what it's worth I never saw much Northwestern homerism in the Tribune. Maybe it's changed in the five years since I left town but the only trace of CFB homerism I remember in the paper is for Notre Dame. Basically they covered ND and the B1G, and their coverage of the conference was pretty even-handed, probably because every one of the schools has a big alumni base in town (well, this was before MD and Rutgers).

Good, balanced paper. A lot of ND coverage, true, but they also beat the living hell out of ND for Lizzy Seeberg and Declan Sullivan. They were ALL OVER them about their disregard for the kids.

This blog is amazing. It may as well be an osu or msu blog. It people aren't on here assuming the worst about our own team they are on here sticking up for our rivals. Amazing.

The difference between this blog and the ones you mentioned is you can dissent here. Free-thinking people everywhere thank you for your indulgence.

People are disppointed in this story(IF true) because it likely shows lack of integrity and morals. If you don't value either, hey good for you.

There are a handful of people suggesting a slow approach and learn some facts before getting upset. On the other hand they are legion the snowflakes that rush out to condemn Harbaugh without hearing anything from his side of the story.

slow approach and learn some facts = let's not talk about it and hopefully it'll blow over

Uh...no, you were trying to insult him. And, you couldn't just go ask Harbaugh. BTW, who the fuck are you to tell him what and when to post?

I have learned UM-Swenson scenario more complicated than it appears, but UM can't comment by NCAA rules. More soon.

Wouldn't talk, your Alabama argument was a strawman.
January 20th, 2016 at 9:43 PM ^
My only beef with this comment and with almost every comment on this thread is that there are so many people here rushing to make a snap judgement either condemning or approving of something based on a bunch of vague assumptions and maybe two or three sentences worth of comments from one half of the situation.
I'm already so tired of this story.
(And no, Brutus, I am not trying to pick on you for this. Just saw your name and decided to respond to you.)
January 20th, 2016 at 9:43 PM ^
In retrospect, this is very accurate. We won't get a full story as to what happened. It just looks bad, whether what happened actually matches what has been said in these news snippets. This drama is why I avoid recruiting.
January 20th, 2016 at 11:46 PM ^
That's fair and I agree, it does look bad. But at this point, I'm just over this story. Swenson has offers to several other good schools and going public about whatever this supposedly is will not have any effect on his playing prospects, as far as I can tell.
And you know, maybe he truly was told about this a while back, maybe he truly was blindsided, maybe he thought that since he gave his verbal to Hoke and was offered previously, his spot was saved no matter what else, maybe he had a shitty year and the coaches told him, "nah, no thank you.". The point is that we will never know and the only word on the matter we will ever have is the word of a freshly wounded high school kid who got spurned by the school he wanted to go to for reasons which we will probably never know but he, and therefore we, can only guess at.
So continuing to poke at this particular story is just pointless to me until this starts happening on the regular to other recruits. Then we can revisit this and start to piece together a narrative.
(And to anybody wanting to bring up Falcon, Colter, or Pipkins, I am not having that argument when there were and are clear medical concerns about them.)

Agree, xxxx, and it astounds me the judgments made when all the facts are not in. Reading comments from a yahoo piece made me want to throw up. But the NCAA.... will not allow Michigan to respond. I may not like their response but I should at least wait till I hear more. If we're in the wrong it wasn't the first time nor will it be the last time. Hopefully we'll learn from it but don't bet on it. I still make some mistakes over and over. And I believe this kid will be just fine. Go Blue!
January 21st, 2016 at 12:14 AM ^
All the facts will NEVER be in and this is not the standard we have used to criticize other schools.
Jeez... Michigan fandom turns some of you into flaming hypocrites.

You do realize that, even with the Swenson drop, the staff is planning on being about 9-10 scholarships over the limit come signing day?
I'm not sure how you can distinguish this from Alabama tactics.
January 20th, 2016 at 11:41 PM ^
You can't... most people know this, but they're just slow playing it and hoping some miracle happens between now and signing day that makes the impending oversigning excusable. Brian and most of the fan base will just shrug and say "playing time transfers" as if that's not exactly the same thing Alabama does(and what this fanbase criticized Alabama for doing every single year.)
It wouldn't bug me as much as it does if these people would just admit that the faux outrage in the past didn't really have anything to do with the kids and everything to do with Michigan not doing it too. Kinda like what Brian asks SEC and ACC fans to do regarding satellite camps.

like to think Michigan adhears to a higher standard than this.
Yeah. For starters, we should learn how to spell better.
Seriously people, this is not a big deal. Swenson has no shortage of college options.

I think the difference is timing. In the Weber case his position coach left right after he signed, like the very next day as opposed to 2 - 4 weeks before nsd. It is now being reported that Swenson is getting a lot of offers as opposed to being locked into a school like weber was.
January 21st, 2016 at 12:34 AM ^
You know if you're going to try and drag Ohio State into this to make yourself feel better, at least pick a name like George HIll so you can compare halfway similar situations. But on the other hand, OSU told George HIll to look around at the start of October, not two weeks before signing day.
January 21st, 2016 at 10:31 AM ^
Objectively, I agree with your sentiment. However, the coaches did tell him about five weeks ago to take all of his visits. That was a major hint that Swenson didn't pick up on for one reason or another. Now, I think the coaches owed it to the kid to be crystal clear, and I am not at all a fan of how this was handled. I just want to be accurate in how we speak about this (and everything else, intellectual dishonesty drives me insane).

January 20th, 2016 at 9:14 PM ^
We screwed someone, but it's ok because the kid has options...two weeks out from signing day and will have to gather all the information possible as quickly as possible to ensure those spots don't close. Sounds good!
January 20th, 2016 at 9:52 PM ^
Swenson states that at least two weeks ago he was told to take official visits with other schools. Given that, it would be interesting if he told us what transpired with his at home visit in early December.
