I think a lot of this has been pretty well established. Brady Hoke seems like a cool guy who'd be fun to have over at a BBQ and have a beer or two with, but he's not a guy you want running your football program. He made way too many questionable decisions and had a disgusting lack of player development to ever be taken seriously as a head football coach ever again. At least at a Power-5 school.

Hoke seems like he'd make a fantastic program recruiter for a Power-5 school, as he's got a great way of relating to kids, or maybe a even good DL coach, but that's about it. If he ever goes back to being a head coach, he needs somewhere with minimal year to year expectations, somewhere where he can keep his head down and stay out of the spotlight. And not having a guy like Dave Brandon breathing down his neck would be nice as well.

Is their guy getting fired or moving up the ranks?

Do you think Tommy T gets another crack at a P5 job after this season?  He always seemed like an odd fit at Cincy.

is a good man and a good football coach. He wouldn't have won two conference coach of the year awards or led Michigan to an 11-2 season and a bowl win if he wasn't a good coach. But he has his flaws. He doesn't seem to have a brilliant football mind and this led to an underwhelming record here. That being said, some of the comments about him here are either inaccurate (especially regarding the Shane Morris incident) and/or just plain mean-spirited. I don't think any decent person or real Michigan fan would make these comments.

Don't want to incur the wrath of SRK again and get wrongfully accused of piling on, but I don't think Brady was a good coach. He was blessed with a senior-laden squad in 2011 and brought in a first-class defensive coordinator, but his true mettle showed after that.

A good/great coach is comprised of many factors, including but not limited to: motivator, recruiter, developer of talent, eye for talented coaches, communicator and a mind for the X's and O's.... Brady was good to great on several, but woefully average to bad on the rest. His player development and ability to identify coaching talent was god awful. Have you seen where his coaching tree landed and their prowess this year? Abysmal is the word that most readily comes to mind.

He's actually won three Coach of the Year awards: in the MAC (2008), the MWC (2010) and the Big Ten (2011).

OTOH, Lloyd Carr never won Big Ten COY, even in 1997.  A lot of it comes down to how high, or low, expectations are for your program.

Is not a bad guy. He was asked if he would have punted and he said no. There are a lot of people who agree. He then did an entire interview essentially to praise Michigan because he realized he shouldn't have commented. We are all piling on a guy who doesn't deserve it. It is pretty classless. Time to let it go.

Hoke is a public figure, and he said something stupid. If you don't want to be lampooned when you say stupid things, then either don't be a public figure or don't say stupid things.

a radio show and was asked what he would done in that situation.  He said he wouldn't have punted the ball and would have gone for it.  Given many of his calls at Michigan on 4th down, for better or worse, I think it is quite possible he would have and in retrospect, going for it does at least eliminate the doom we suffered while admittedly opening the door for a different kind of doom.  It is not a #hottake.  It is a reasonable one.  He wasn't asked about the rest of the game and it is quite clear to listeners and pretty much anybody who knows anything about college football that Michigan would not have been in the game at all with Hoke as coach. That is why he is on the radio now.  It doesn't need to be said.  That is the #hottake in this situation and it is not funny or clever.

This is misdirected anger.  It is spitting on somebody's grave who was partially a victim of a very incompetent athletic department just as we all were as fans. It is the inability to ackowlledge that yes, in hindsight, there may have been better options or other possibilities even if what Harbaugh chose to do was statistically sound.  It is scapegoating. It is a number of things that I would expect from State fans but it should not be the Michigan way.

Brady was in over his head at Michigan and Dave Fucking Brandon did him, and all of us, a disservice by putting him there. I'm sure Brady is a good man, but he was not a good head coach at Michigan.

Also, as EGD said, Brady says stupid things - when he was winning in 2011, he sounded folksy and down to earth, but in reality, he might not be all that bright.

Did he? I don't think his theoretical decision to go for it is stupid. You can argue that it wouldn't be the best decision, and I would agree with you. But going for it would lower the win probability something like less than one percent. So, it's not egregious. The issue is that Hoke said it. If Lloyd said it, there would be no backlash at all, even though it is likely less probable to be true. But Hoke was a much worse coach than Carr and his failures are more recent. Hoke didn't even say Harbaugh did the wrong thing. He just said he would have done something different. That different thing isn't crazy on it's face.

The issue for me is that if you go and fail (very likely unless you throw), no way the clock is 00, and MSU can loft the ball all the way into the end zone where something can, and often does, happen the wrong way.

Catch the punt snap, favorable outcome is virtually guaranteed.  Wonder what Belichick would do.  Parcells? Lomardi? Landry? Shula? Vermeil? Noll? Walsh?  Grant? Stram? Madden? Gibbs? Schembechler? Hayes? Parseghian? Saban? Bryant? Spurrier? Broyles? Devine? Rockne? Dooley? Tressel? Holtz? Royal? McKay? Wilkinson? Osborne? Paterno?, and countless others.

Not one of those coaches would have done anything other than punt.  Can this even be seriously debated?

***QUIT POSTING SHIT ON THIS SITE THAT IS MORE STALE THAN THE AIR IN A DORM ROOM AFTER A WEEKEND BENDER***

It's a simple concept to understand, really. Ask yourself the following:

  • Is the thing I'm about to post more than a couple of hours old?
  • Does MGoBlog have a community of readers/contributors?
  • Does that MGoCommunity have access to the internet?

If the answer to all three is "YES" then rest assured, you don't need to post it. It's been done already. Probably more than once.

Thanks for  picking up the gauntlet.

You know how some websites make you hit "confirm" or something before they let you hit submit?  And how those sites will sometimes give you a pop-up with some sort of warning that you have to check-off to acknowledge you understand the warning?

I think we need one here as well.  Whenever somebody wants to create content for the board there ought to be a pop-up that appears when somebody hits save that says:

"PLEASE CHECK THE TIMESTAMP FOR YOUR NEWS.  IF IT'S OVER ONE HOUR OLD IT HAS ALREADY BEEN POSTED."

Reminds me of that old economics joke:

An economics professor and his student are walking down the street. The student sees a $20 bill on the ground and says, "Look, there's a $20 bill on the ground." The professor, without looking down, replies, "No there isn't. If there was, somebody would have picked it up already."

I don't mind seeing Jane get a bit of extra exposure, but this has been on m.go.licious for at least a day or so.

On the EDSBS piece, I think we can take Jane's metaphor even a bit further.  Brady Hoke himself was like an "air bridge" to save Michigan.  Maybe OK on paper, but really doomed from the start.

I hope Hoke lands another coaching gig soon. With a great OC and better position coaches, I think he'd do well. If he can get his future team to consistently play like his Michigan teams against Ohio State, look out!

I think he will do good with the right coordinators around. I think he knows defense well enough. Is likable and cares deeply about kids so he will recruit well. Just needs to strike gold with coordinators etc.

But it's a form of hostile work environment when your boss is looking over your shoulder and in your ear 24x7.  Hoke's too nice a guy to tell DB to shove it.  He's such a nice guy he went along with the "took the job without asking about the pay" story that DB wanted to peddle at his introductory press conference so he sounded just like Bo when he was hired.  Hoke seemed to do better at Ball State and SDSU where I would assume the AD kept his nose out of Hoke's coaching.  I think he learned a lesson here and deserves a shot somewhere (not saying a P5 school) to try being HC again.  It will be a risk for a school to do that, but he may be just the right guy based on circumstances.

If Hoke could come back as an assistant coach in a few years he would. We all feel bad about last Saturday but think what it's like to be him. He had his dream job, now it's gone and isn't coming back. He must second guess himself every day, still. Michigan is his dream school & he wishes he could be a part of the staff now, but realizes that's not possible. I know he made a lot of money at UM & is certainly no charity case but he must still feel like cr*p about how his world came crashing down. I think he still wants to be part of the University but can't at least now.

Why do you think Brady Hoke has no pride and no ambition? The man has been a head coach at the last three schools he's been at. Why do you think he's doing these interviews? He's looking for some head coaching gig somewhere and his public appearances and statements are a "Hey, I'm here" to some athletic director who might hire him. His taking the Michigan job and jumping from San Diego showed that ambition. He took his dream job.

I'll bet you his dream job isn't being subordinate to Harbaugh and being reminded of what might have been every time a Harbaugh-led team wins a game, a conference title, or a championship. Having to take orders from someone who replaced you is galling or do you think that Hoke has absolutely no pride??

If you truly believe in this fantasy of how Hoke's ego is subsumed by his love for ALL THINGS MICHIGAN then explain why a multimillionaire like him isn't say, offering his services as a volunteer in the athletic department to help his old team out?
