OT: Your Top 5 TV Dramas of all-time
There was a sub-discussion in the Mad Men series final for this the other week and it got me thinking. Mine would be:
5. Boardwalk Empire - probably not on a lot of people's top 5. I think Michael Pitt's potrayal as Jimmy Darmody is one of more underrated tv performances of all time.
4. The Sopranos - Credited as the show that got presitige tv drama series really going. People still talk/debate about the finale to this day. Also great acting as a whole. RIP James Gandolfini.
3. Breaking Bad - Has as some of the best use of cinematography I've ever seen. Gustavo Fring is probably my favorite villain of all-time in a series.
2. Mad Men - Don Draper is probably my favorite drama character of all time in terms of level of intrique. Hamm better finally win an Emmy this year! This show is more character--driven than most shows which causes some to stay away from it and either love it or hate it. I thought the series finale was great and stayed true to the show being an accurate illistration of human behavior.
1. The Wire - It seems there's not a lot of middle ground in regards to this show in that people think it's the most overrated show ever, or that it's the greatest show ever. I obviously fall in the latter. I think it's as close to a flawless show as you can get, and I believe it has the overall best acting on a show that we'll ever see.
So I like AMC and HBO shows as you can see, and probably favor shows in recent time. But all just my opinion.
What are yours?

Really? Season 1 was great but man the last 2 seasons were terrible.
Exact same three for me. I'd put LOST up there too -- not the best show ever, but maybe the most addictive show ever.
True Detective in there somewhere. Only one season but what a season it was.
Seriously I wish they would have just built on that season.
Bloodline is an awesome show. It's only on Netflix tho.
Watching it now, don't really care for it.
Like, what the hell am I supposed to be invested in?
The screw up brother? The Jimmy Buffet fat brother? The cop? Am I supposed to have empathy for the cheating whore from Freaks and Geeks? Is that who I am rooting for? Call me crazy but I like to actually care about a character in a story that's all.
I invested in Danny because I tent to root for the "bad guy" in TV shows (Walter White, Dexter Morgan, etc)
IMO you don't need to pick a single character to enjoy Bloodline. In this show, they reveal what happens in the first episode and it's interesting to me how they finally got to that point. Yes, the first few episodes may be a little slow but it really picks up and is quite entertaining over the last 5 episodes.
I guess... I have only been through about 4 eps but like I told the GF, that's like 8 episodes of a half hour tv show. I need something by this point. Anything really.
That's how I felt about Breaking Bad, I hated all the main characters.
You hated Jesse?
Walter, Skylar, Hank and Marie : I get it.
But Jesse, Flynn, Saul and Mike are quite likeable.
The OP ain't got no love for Twin Peaks?
West Wing was a brilliant show, and in my opinion the best ever - hands down.
I've probably re-watched West Wing 5 or 6 times by now and it never gets old. Jed Bartlet is one of the greatest fictional Presidents of all time, right up there with President Thomas J. Whitmore from Independence Day.
Bartlett: "I thought you said, 'Michigan sucks.'"
McGarry: "No sir," Leo answers. "We're standing close to the engines so it may have sounded like I said, 'Notre Dame is going to get the ass-kicking they so richly deserve.'"
For that quote alone I shall forever love the character of Leo and that show.
4. Shameless
3. Game of Thrones
2. Boardwalk Empire
1. THE WIRE

All five seasons in a week? You must have had some crazy dreams...
Now Imma let you finish, but True Detective had one of the best first seasons of all time.
Can't put it on the list of greats as a series since just 1 season, but season 1 of it could certainly be on a list of best season of TV of all-time. Can't for season 2 that's about to come out
I see you have plenty of time to post on mgoblog, but not enough time to pick up the phone and call.
LOL you back in the Ville?
I havent been to an alumni event since you guys left : (
Nope. Staying in Boston forever
Agreed. It's a superior town in nearly every aspect.
I really enjoyed True Detective until the final episode, which in my opinion was a huge letdown.
The Wire, Breaking Bad, and House of Cards would be my top 3.
1. Miami Vice
2. NCIS
3.CSI:NY
4.Starsky&Hutch
5.The Waltons

Seriously what a ridiculous list. No way The Waltons aren't number 1.
How long have you been collecting social security?
5. The Wire
4. Star Trek: The Next Generation
3. West Wing
2. Twin Peaks
1. Mad Men
Your list damn close to what I would pick, particularly with The Wire in the top spot. The Shield was excellent and I greatly enjoyed Sons of Anarchy as well as those previously mentioned.
- The Sopranos
- Breaking Bad
- The Wire
- Mad Men
- Twin Peaks
Breaking Bad/The Wire/The Sopranos debate.
- Game of Thrones
- The Sopranos
- The Wire
- Breaking Bad
- Justified
I was about to post how offensive it is that no one had Justified in their list, and there you are. Great show from episode one to the series finale.
Man, this is a hard list to make, as there are many knocking on the door to be in my top 5. I guess this is my top 5, but # 4 and 5 are pretty much interchangeable with about 5+ other shows that aren't listed here:
1. Doctor Who
2. Luther
3. Sherlock
4. Game of Thrones
5. Lost
This wouldn't necessarily be an all-time thing for me yet as it is only two seasons young, but if it continues with the same quality and ability to entertain as it has so far, "Broadchurch" would have a good argument. I've been catching up with it, and it is definitely one of the best out there at the moment.
Broadchurch is definitely a contender for my future top 5. David Tennant is one hell of a goddamn actor. Also, you will not dissapointed by the end of season 2 if you're not there yet.
There's also an American version of Broadchurch with Tennant reprising his role but all the other actors different. I tried watching it, but couldn't really get into it after watching the British version. I also would vote for Sherlock, but there are so few episodes it's hard to include. Another BBC America show, Orphan Black is also really well done.
I love Doctor Who (only have watched the modern Doctor Who), but I have a hard time putting it in the Drama Category. It is Sci-Fi with Action, Comedy, and Drama all rolled into one.
