Detailed Spring Practice #7 Report
I haven't seen this linked to the board yet so please delete if it's already been posted, but here's a great report from the latest spring practice. It's very bullish on Shane being the starter at this point, apparently he had a great outing. OL looking good outside of center right now. Almost exclusively base 3-4 defense. Definitely worth a read.

I'm sorry, but I just can't call middle of a mediocre B1G "good".
It's not bad. It's not good. It's just middling. It's that 60% that get a C when grading on a curve.
And again, with FEI and S&P, you're talking about pretty good teams except for Penn State
Teams that finished ahead of Michigan in Defensive FEI:
Virginia Tech (6-6)
Florida(6-5)
Virginia(4-7)
Stanford(7-5)
Washington(7-6)
Arkansas(6-6)
Texas(6-7)
Tennessee (6-6)
Temple(5-6)
Miami(5-7)
Syracuse(2-9)
West Virginia (6-6)
Sounds like a report from one of the first practices, to me.
Wow this guy ends his empty article with this gem:
"It may be too early to panic but these reports are not good in Spring practice. I still think Harbaugh will win more games with this group than Hoke, but there are concerns that the talent level at Michigan simply isn’t there yet."
What an inane comment. He says it as if this is even debatable...how could anyone take this guy serious?

Good info.
Balas flat out said Brian Cole is the best WR and will start. Sounds like this report suports that statement.
I'd be alright with him and Darboh starting. And Canteen in the slot.
I been saying for a while now that he was the most talented player in the state this year and probably the most important recruit. Kid is a gamebreaker with the ball in his hands.
Don't tell that to that jagweed Matt Dorsey. He had Cole as the #9 player in the state.

1. Shane Morris, Jr-
. Shane Morris ran with the 1’s all afternoon. In warm ups and seven on seven drills, Morris was dropping dimes, and I cannot recall a single ball of his hitting the ground. It was readily apparent that he has the best command of the offense of all QB’s, At this point it appears it is Morris’s job to lose.
This is a helluva contrast from the reports about him when practice began. All hail Harbaugh the QB whisperer. And Fisch too.

Good to hear. Many have given up on Morris, but our best-case scenario this year is clearly one in which Morris finally puts it all together.
"The defense came out In a traditional 3-4, and only moved to a four man front for a Nickel package that was similar to a 4-2-5"
The Henry-Glasgow-Wormley front sounded interesting to me. I know we had a thread about the defense earlier, but I am interested to see the multi-dimensional angle that Durkin seems to be adding to it.
I feel like if they're going to run the 3-4, it needs to be Pip or Mone in the middle. You gotta have a guy that a massive and will demand a double team.
Why not Glasgow? He's not exactly small and is reportedly extremely strong for his size. Pipkins has 20 pounds on him, but that's mostly bad weight. It's not like Glasgow would all of a sudden be better with 20 pounds of flub added to him.
I think all three can be good, but I don't think Ryan Glasgow should be ruled out. He has looked the best of those three so far anyway.
EDIT: Although the interesting thing is that with a Wormley-Glasgow-Henry DL, the NT would be the lightest of the three. That's just a huge DL.
Wormley is a very interesting player to me. He seems to make splash plays or do nothing on any particular play - which is his issue. He seems to be very talented but his motor is in question. Sometimes those guys hit a switch as they get older - sometimes they don't. But aside from Henry I think he could be the most talented DL if he can be consistent.
He is also now 2 years removed from his ACL so that could be an incremental help as well.
I like this defense better in a 3-4 this year as I am not convinced on our DEs in a 4-3. I also want to see Gedeon on the field and not stuck behind Bolden/Morgan and that is one way to do it.
Shane has consistenly ran with the 1's more than any other QB.
Jim Harbaugh preaches competition and rewarding winners with reps with the 1's. That's why I laugh at all these practice reports from paid sites claiming everyone but Shane is looking good yet none of them ever state who started the day with the 1's and who took most the reps with the 1's. It's been Shane more often than not. So either Jim Harbaugh is blowing smoke up Shane's @ss or these paid sites are pushing an agenda and/or getting fed bad info. (probably a bit of both)
Shane has and will continue to rep with the 1's. He's seperated himself from this pack. Is he good enough to be the starter vs Utah? Depends on if Ruddock ends up at Michigan IMO.
It could also be that the staff wants to keep it secret for whatever reason. Marcus Ray last week said there was one QB running more with the 1's but he wouldn't say who.
I also like how the OL seems to be shaping out. I think once Graham is back from suspension the line will look like this:
Cole/Mags/Glasgow/Kalis/Braden

It is interesting to hear two views that different.
I'm not going to panic because I am positive the team will makes steps forward this coming season. This staff will squeeze more juice out of the players we have. This NFL based staff will also bring in bigger, faster, and better talent. It is happening.
Dave Dawson: Fully dressed, no participation however.
Terry Richardson: Fully dressed, no participation however.
Could be anything of course, but that is where my mind went. A fun visual despite being unfair pure wild conjecture.
I like our coach.
-I can get behind a LTT, Magnuson, Cole, Kalis, Braden line, especially if Kalis and Braden take steps forward this season. Excited to see the running backs with the group.
-Shane Morris looks good? Sounds good to me!
-Lots of bodies at wide receiver. Going to be an exciting group to watch as the season goes on an competition gets even more fierce.
Can't wait for the spring game.
Every time I see the letters R, T, D together.... I think RollDamnTide. F U RDT!
Hope Ross Taylor-Douglass sees the field, if for no reason other than to get my mind corrected.
And that was the last time the team had even average performance at center. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but even when Molk was out for the VT game we saw the offense crater. It's been a major issue these past couple of years in the middle of that line, and you can only blame guards so much.
Let's give Cole a bit more time, eh?

uh what
And if so, would it not be better for everyone, especially Pipkins, if the staff were to redshirt him, get him healthy, coach him up for a year, and have him come back next year for his last year, and try to live up to his potential.
We talk alot on this site about what is, "best for the kids" maybe sitting out a year would be the best thing for this particular kid, but then again, maybe I'm all wet, and it is simply a lack of hard work and motivation on Pip's part, only the coaching staff knows.
I like the idea of Strobel at TE. It seems like he was a good athlete/football player out of high school who just couldn't find a pure fit on the D line.
Agreed. I like the idea of finding ways to get as many people involved as possible.
What's going on with Peppers? Why was he a non-participant today?
Got his wisdom teeth pulled a couple days ago.
Going through it y'all..
This is earlier today when I had my wisdom teeth pulled.. Yea the meds wore off now
