Your unpopular sports opinions?
I think the NHL should bring back ties instead of gimmicky shootouts. I also think the NBA should institute a 4 point line that was talked about not that long ago. Would shake up the game of basketball like it was when the 3 was instituted.
No politics or religion, please. This is a thread on your unpopular sports opinions.

They went 55-27 without Jordan, and Pippen was one of the greatest defenders ever who could guard multiple positions.

guy was a poodle with an attitude. without MJ he was at best a mediocre pro.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:35 PM ^
I don't know. He had an incredible year after Jordan first retired...finished 2 or 3rd in the MVP voting.

If Pippen shouldn't be in, then guys like James Worthy shouldn't be in either.

Yes, there is no need to measure this sabre, the eye test says it's long enough.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:22 PM ^
a complete outrage.
Scottie Pippen was so good it was funny at times. He was one of the most athletically gifted players to ever play the game.
February 13th, 2015 at 6:32 PM ^
sabermetrics are fine. most of the stuff that isconsidered to be "sabermetrics" is actually really simple stuff that most people have been aware of for decades (in baseball at least) but nobody has ever ever taken the time to actually count it all up and turn it into a statistic before.
what you probably dont like about sabermetrics are all the arm-chair "sabermetricans" who think they know everything.

I thought MJ was over rated. Great player but shouldn't be on the pedistool he is.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:08 PM ^
He's not a good person, but I get why he's so idolized. He was truly the first great sports marketing phenom. Cable TV was getting widespread, the dunk contest was still a thing, and he had elite athleticism. Didn't hurt that he is a pretty good-looking guy, and he could score in buckets.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:26 PM ^
Not being a dick, but just wondering if you watched him much in his prime when you were old enough to be an educated fan. Dude was unbelievable. and also a cocknozzle.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:01 PM ^
I did watch in his prime. I don't think he's garbage. I am not saying he's Carmelo Anthony, but I think his game was predicated on Michael getting his. I don't think he made players around him better and he had arguably one of the greatest supporting casts of all time.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:26 PM ^
Yeah, he had Rodman a little later, but he won with (an old) Cartwright, Paxon, Horace Grant, and BJ Armstrong. And he beat still very good Pistons and Celtics teams. I'd say he had far less to work with than Magic, Isiah, or Bird did. Or much later as much as Kobe or LeBron had.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:50 PM ^
Jordan only had 3 seasons his whole career where averaged more than 6 assists. Lebron has only had 1 season his whole career (rookie) where he didn't average more than 6. Look I didn't say he sucked. I just don't think he's the iconic (greatest player of all time) that people make him out to be. Great competitor, just not the greatest player of all time. Over the course of his career he averaged 3 more shots a game than Lebron to get an on average 3 more points a game.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:27 PM ^
whatever he needed to do for his team to win, and a lot of times that meant getting his all day long. He was not a selfish basketball player though. Many of the Bulls iconic moments involve plays where Jordan assisted in a game winning basket. He was the smartest player I have ever watched, if you could not guard him he could go entire quarters seemingly without passing the ball because that was the easiest way for his team to win the game.
To say he is overrated, I don't know man, I don't know what you were watching. Not the same game I was, that is for sure.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:51 PM ^
I didn't say my opinion was popular. I can just think of a good handful of guys that I thought were better overall players.

Pedistool? Like, a foot stool?
February 13th, 2015 at 4:41 PM ^
As soon as I hit save I knew I made a mistake. By the time I went to fix it... to late.

College basketball should just switch to NBA shotclock and 3 point line already.
Bo was a great man but his coaching record is very overrated compared to his legendary peers.
Big O averaging a triple double for a season is as impressive as Wayne Gretzky's 215 pt season.
Ichiro would have destroyed Pete Rose's hit record if he played in the MLB sooner.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:48 PM ^
After the '69 Game, Bo faced 32 teams that finished the year with two or fewer losses. He only won five of them, and never beat a team that finished the year with one loss (out of 17 attempts).
Obviously there's more to his legacy than that, of course.

Hockey - 4 on 4, then 3 on 3 in OT.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:06 PM ^
sure. But during the season just give a point to each for a tie. Save some wear & tear on the players. They already play over 80 games in the most physically demanding sport.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:24 PM ^
I'm ok with ties too. But absolutely do not change OT for the playoffs!! It is already beautiful, and one of the reasons why the NHL playoffs are far superior to any other league.

is painfully slow to watch at home. Someone needs to either speed up the game or cut a few innings.
NHL shootouts are dumb but I like the idea of 3 on 3 for OT.
Football should either eliminate or change the extra point to make it more difficult (unless you're Bama in the Orange Bowl).
There is no consistency in officiating. They should be allowed to be fined by the league they work for. Also replays for penalites or other bad officiating moves (disallowed goal in hockey for standing in the crease when not in the crease).
Sailing should allow boats to interact (bump) while tacking.
Rant over.

Im all for taking measures to improve officiating, but do you get fined everytime you make a mistake at your job?
February 13th, 2015 at 3:04 PM ^
I think soccer should adopt unlimited substitutions. Not rolling like hockey, necessarily, but timed at the ref's discretion as now, only as many as you want. And you could go back into the game once you came out of it.
There would be more goals, teams would have more than one guy over thirty on their roster, you'd have more players to be fans of, etc.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:11 PM ^
February 13th, 2015 at 3:54 PM ^
Unlimited might be overdoing it, but I don't understand why teams can't get a 4th substitute for games that go into extra time.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:35 PM ^
We're just going to have to agree to disagree. I won't neg you, either. :)
But I have watched plenty of international friendlies, thanks. And you know what the thing about them is? They're _friendlies._ Neither coaches nor players approach them the same way that they approach a regular game. That's why the rules are different, after all.
Unlimited substitutions would mean fresher legs, better ability to respond tactically to any situation, and higher quality soccer on the field.
The common, played-out argument that the game would be 'disrupted' was also used in old FA cup ball pre-1960? 65? against the idea of going to three subs instead of one or zero or whatever they had. And... turns out the game hasn't been disrupted at all.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:04 PM ^
and that includes virtually all sports, college and pro. old uni's rule.
football should be played with black high-top cleats and white socks, not worn too high. and while we're at it, with the older style (mid-70's to mid-90's) facemasks.
there is no need for 4 referees in a hockey game, that is ridiculous.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:19 PM ^
And for baseball, bring back stirrups.
