You must really love Zone Left

Good luck Tennessee offense.

Be prepared for zone left on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and occasionally 4th down. Just when you think he will try a different play.. Zone left.
Your welcome.

2nd and long was always a draw or bubble screen. Every single time. Drove me insane when a schmuck like me sitting on the couch could predict what they were doing.

Sweeps to the short side of the field and the QB play action bootleg.

Was that also his explanation for the preceding 5 years?

deBord was fantastically un-creative (one of my favorite Mgblog articles of all time is this one) to the point USC blatantly shifted its defense to the left on the 1st play of the 2007 Rose Bowl.
The parallels between him and Al Borges were many.
At Tenn they do shotgun, hurry up no-huddle, which is a far cry from the 2006-2007 Michigan offense. This should be interesting, but there's no way a man out of football for nearly 10 years is up to date on the latest offensive strategy.

Going back to read that article was a trip. I remember those days and while they were frustrating, we had no idea, man. No idea.

Plenty of people who have never eve been in football seem to think they know how to coach and game plan.

We started every game with the exact same play that year, and it was magical.

That Michigan had the 11th best offense in the nation according to S&P for 2006. That was with the 5th best defense.
Bitch about zone left when it doesn't work. Bitch about not running behind Jake Long when they try something different and it doesn't work.
The 2006 Michigan offense was the best Michigan offense according to S&P besides... the 2012 offense...
(FWIW, his 2007 offense was 51 despite playing half the time with a true FR QB, two So RBs, and half an OL. His 2005 offense was 33rd; the fact that Michigan often played very conservatively with leads may have helped/hurt the team from a high level, but it almost certainly only hurt the offense alone; DeBord, while not perfect, was a scapegoat like all OCs are scapegoats eventually).

Who is the least liked Carr OC?
Malone? Parrish?Debord?
February 5th, 2015 at 1:32 PM ^
What qualifies DeBord for the position? He has been out of college football since 2007 and wasn't exactly highly regarded at that time. Also not considered a good recruiter.
February 5th, 2015 at 1:33 PM ^
If Butch Jones gives DeBord the mandate to create an offensive game plan like the one he created for the 2008 Citrus Bowl game against Florida, Tennessee witll surprise a lot of people.
February 5th, 2015 at 4:27 PM ^
game plan was the season plan until injuries. There were stories back then of the staff meeting with Colts staff on blocking schemes and other aspects.
February 5th, 2015 at 6:11 PM ^
Yes, Tom Moore was brought in during the summer to help develop that offense. Tom Moore created the offense that Peyton Manning went on to make famous.

Well that explains why Butch was able to nab so many high end players in his class - the prospect of playing in that zany aggressive Mike Debord scheme has to have TN offensive recruits salivating....
What an ace up the sleeve for Butch!
February 5th, 2015 at 1:41 PM ^
Yet one more reason for Tennessee fans to hate our 1997 football team.

What the hell is happening on Rocky Top? 7-6 season and they land 4 5-star recruits, a top 5 class overall, and then hire Mike DeBord? Honestly, this is like taking two enormous leaps forward and one giant step back. Go ahead and fill your Porsche with 87 and see what happens.
February 5th, 2015 at 2:23 PM ^
I've done that and it ran sluggish...very sluggish.
February 5th, 2015 at 3:09 PM ^
Tennessee had a very highly ranked class last year. They, like Michigan, have grossly underperformed relative to their recruiting for a while. They have been through five coaches since 2008, including the Kiffin debacle.
If Jones can do some coaching, the Vols could be very good in the not too distant future. They also seem to go after an awful lot of the same players we do.....hope Debord won't help them in this regard.
February 5th, 2015 at 1:56 PM ^
See, what happens now is that you'll have another fanbase - several years down the road - who can actually ask people (and answer) the question, "Do you remember the one time Mike DeBord went four wide? Seriously, it was one time, and only because someone asked nicely"
How did Brian describe him once...."The Grover Cleveland of the first down". Somehow fitting.
